We're heading to San Fran for our 25th Wedding Anniversary, and looking for non-oriental Veggie romantic restaurant, any suggestions? Thanks

gaylord's india? not sure if indian falls under oriental. the term oriental is kind of outdated...what is the "orient" anyway?

sorry, for this purpose I meant to exclude Chinese, Thai, Japanese etc. Indian would be great.

greens restaurant right in fort mason, on the water. make sure your request a seat next to the enormous windows so you get the whole view of the bay, the sailboats, and the bridge. the food is fantastic, you won't be disappointed. the waitstaff is lovely and those in the kitchen are even lovelier. while they usually have one (and maybe an appetizer) asian-inspired entree, i would describe the menu as california/mediterranean/whatever is is season and delicious. happy food. also, if you don't get a chance to go there for dinner, make sure you go for sunday brunch.

I second Greens (http://www.greensrestaurant.com/), which is not only an incredibly beautiful restaurant, but is also absolutely delicious! My other suggestion is Millennium (http://www.millenniumrestaurant.com/), another fantastic non-asian vegetarian restaurant, on Geary St. in San Francisco.

See if Chez Panisse is offering a vegetarian menu...

i third greens. it's one of my favorite places to eat in san francisco.

Greens is quite nice, but the atmosphere is more military hanger than romantic (it is an old military base, after all). The view is first class and the area around Fort Mason can be a nice place to stroll after dinner (it also can be cold, foggy and windy).

If you want to drop some big $, check into Fleur de Lys, which offers a multi-course vegetarian tasting menu. The space is old world romantic, the food magnificent. And I hear that if you tell them it's a special occasion they give extra special treatment. At least that's what I hear -- I haven't actually been. I'm still waiting for the right occasion.

Another big $ place that offers vegetarian tasting menus is Masa's, which consistently gets the top rating from the SF Chronicle reviewers.

I imagine that many top tier restaurants (e.g. Gary Danko, Michael Mina, Farallon) will offer special vegetarian meals on request, but I'd ask some hard questions before making a reservation, like "how do I know you're not going to serve me a $42 pasta primavera?"

Thanks all, this will give us a great starting point when we get there!
Dave

Just about any nice restaurant in SF will cater to veggies (although we had a really, really bad experience with Amé, so scratch that one) but for a purely veg place that's got great atmosphere, Millenium is hard to top. I think the setting is much more romantic than Green's.

emptyage's recommendation of Millenium is a great one, can't believe that it wasn't mentioned before or that I forgot about it. The chef is far more daring than Greens, more willing to experiment.
