Portland Maine special occasion splurge restaurants?

Fore Street or 555? I haven't been to either but heard they're both fabulous. It's for a special occasion (a big birthday) for a couple. One is a big carnivore (and appreciates larger portions rather than smaller nouveau plating style) and the other loves seafood (hence a weekend in Portland)..Have you been to either? Which do you prefer? Raves? Must-gets?? Thanks a million!

Never been to either, but I have been here, and it's divine, if you feel like a 30 minute drive to Brunswick:

Henry & Marty Restaurant
(207) 721-9141
61 Maine St, Brunswick, ME

If you have only 1 meal in Portland, then it must be Fore Street.

555 really is not that special unless you are a bell pepper enthusiast. Almost everything had them in it. It was overpriced and the service was spotty.

I haven't been to either of the two, but I've heard good things about Fore Street. I would like to make a suggestion for a fantastic place that fits your needs. Dimillo's Floating Restaurant. It's right on the water so the scenery is beautiful, they have big portions and lots of seafood choices on the menu. The food is excellent by the way.

I had my wedding reception on the upper deck, inside and out. It really made things memorable, 7 years later and people still talk about it.

i went to college in maine and am very familiar with portland restaurants and there are some very good ones. however, i'm going to second the suggestion to go up to Brunswick and eat at Henry & Marty if it's a possibility. I think it's better than Fore Street, it's an absolute hidden gem. The portions are very generous for a place that's pretty upscale to be in Maine. It's by far the nicest and best restaurant in Brunswick. For straight forward sea food in Portland I actually like Jay's Oyster Bar. The prices are shockingly affordable and everything is really outstanding.
