pastries!

a light, flaky almond croissant with a cup of coffee can make any afternoon a divine one... What is your pastry of choice, and at what time of day do you prefer to indulge?

Cafe con leche with a flaky croissant smeared with strawberry preserves!

mostly i like to have a hearty breakfast that will keep me going through my morning classes (a big bowl of oatmeal, yogurt and granola, eggs and toast with peanut butter). there are those certain days, however, where i prefer to start myself off with something special like a pastry. in order for it to be special it has to be occasional and this has become less and less occasional for me -- there is the most fantastic bakery in the small town of tivoli just 10 minutes from my school. a cranberry scone, raspberry corn muffin, cinnamon bun, or chocolate brioche can make any girl's day (and a cup of strong coffee, of course). but i must agree with my sister, tudogostoso, that nothing can beat a perfectly flaky, not-too-sweet almond croissant.

Oh hell its like an AA meeting. My name is Jerzee and I love raspberry squares, lemon squares, linzer torte, napoleans, rugelah, or a fresh cinnamon bun.
(everyone says Hi Jerzee) then we drink coffee and eat donuts.

hmmm... I'll go for anything really. But nothing beats a hot cup of bold black coffee and an anise biscotti in the morning.

numnums, do you go to Bard? That bakery in Tivoli is smashing. I had a corn muffin there once after getting a root canal, and it made my morning waaaay better.

Almond croissants, cheese danishes, any type of scone...

i used to work at the most amazing belgian patisserie. i was opening and closing counter staff so my hours were usually 530am - 530 or 6 pm. in the morning while i was prepping the store and the orders i was allowed to eat fresh out of the oven croissants, danishes, brioche. oh my. needless to say i gained a lot of weight in the years i worked there, but it was worth it. those early morning, still warm treats make up most of my best pastry moments.

Of course I will have to say the Pretzel Croissant from City Bakery, with a shot of hot chocolate in the late afternoon.

oh my lord! i've always wanted to speak to someone who has tried a city bakery pretzel croissant. could you describe, please? i am so curious. their chocolate chip cookies are divine.

yes i go to bard, christina -- do you? aren't those muffins lovely? as for city bakery, i just tried their chocolate chip cookie this weekend and it made me want to cry it was so good.

I had a short internship at an Austrian Bakery and my fall back was an apple croissant. I also like the Marzipan Chocolate Chip cake or a cheese danish square. My bev of choice would have to be ice cold water. Next time I'm home I think I'll have to swing by the bakery...

When I hear "pastry" I think either Italian or French delicate baked "cases" holding either fruit or cream. Cannoli or filled Zeppole are the first things that spring to mind. Greek bakeries are also wonderlands of sugary creamy crunchy goodness. And the word "pastry" says "dessert" to me.

Does Maury Rubin still own City Bakery? I remember spots he did on Martha Stewart Living. She used to say he was the only one who could get away with flinging flour all over her kitchen.

At breakfast time, I'm less likely to grab something sweet. A nice piece of baguette, toasted or leftover focaccia...I'm more apt to go savory at breakfast time.

I will continue the City Bakery discussion. I believe Maury Rubin still owns it, plus the new Birdbath bakeries. I love to get the bakers muffin at City Bakery with a cup of black coffee. It is unusual in that it is yeast based, like a coffee cake or babka. Unfortunately, I love all pastries, so I can find something I like no matter where I go!

The worst thing about a place like City Bakery or any good pastry shop is having to decide! Aggggh (holds head, eyes rolling back)!

numnum-- I do go to Bard. Maybe I'll see you at that Tivoli bakery someday, getting a muffin. : )

chrissyd7, I had almost forgotten Cafe con Leche (the hot milk and copious amounts of Nescafe that is served all over Mexico) but I'll second your vote. Now in keeping with the international theme, in the Czech Republic they have a little goody called a "Vetrnik" (translates to windmill and is essentially a split crueller donut filled with flavored cream and glazed with a caramel frosting! Failing to get passage to Czech, bring me a chocolate elcair.

Before I developed a rather nasty case of lactose intolerance (although for some reason I can still eat yoghurt), I lived in Spain, where there was this amazing bakery that served the biggest, freshest croissants you have ever seen, and then slit them open, and poured chocolate ganache inside. Then, they would close them up and pour more on top. Really. Does it get much better than that?

I love Greek pastries made of phyllo dough and doused in honey. With a cup of mint tea, bring 'em on!
