Italian vacation/restaurant suggestions

I will be in Italy in two weeks-my first trip there, and will be in Venice for three days, Florence for three, and Rome for four. I'm looking for restaurant suggestions and would appreciate any input. Thanks fellow eaters for any suggestions.Sincerely, Remycat

In Florence, for Neapolitan style pizza, Il Pizzaiolo near Piazza Santa Croce, Via de’ Macci, 113 r. If you are adventurous and are curious about traditional Tuscan food, right across the way from the pizzeria is a trattoria (better value than its ristorante), Cibreo. It is delicious and a wonderful experience.

In Rome, the most simple, no-name trattorias won me over. I am sorry I do not recall their names. The fancy places were more likely to disappoint. Frank Bruni might be more helpful: http://dinersjournal.blogs.nytimes.com/author/fbruni/2006/10/13/

Please do not leave without trying the gelato near the Trevi Fountain on via della Panetteria, Gelateria San Crispino.

In Florence: da il Latini is very fun, homey, and authentic Tuscan cuisine. It's near the train station. Antico Noe is a very affordable and DELICIOUS sandwich shop/osteria. It's on a street behind the Duomo, so take via del Oriuolo down a ways, until there's a little alley/tunnel on your right (Arco di San Piero). My favorite gelato is Perche No, on via del Tavolini at the
corner of via Calzaiuoli. Just look for the ForEx office and it's
right next door.

I have several tips for Rome:

-- Piperno in the Ghetto section of town is the place to go for traditional Roman fried foods, including the fabulous cariciofi fritti (fried artichoke) and the extensive tavolo caldo of vegetables. Reserve in advance! Go to http://www.ristorantepiperno.com/piperno%20restaurant.htm for more info.

-- Il Sanpietrino is run by a chef who worked for Puck at Chinois for some time. The website is http://www.ilsanpietrino.it/ilsanpietrino/. Click on Menu to get a preview - the turbot in zucchini crust is amazing. The 45 euro tasting menu is well worth it! However, note that the location is hard to find (we had to get help from a condottieri) so get good directions.

-- Tramani Wine Bar, Via Cernaia 37B, is a good place to have a light supper and to try great wines by the glass. Don't miss the gorgonzola and chestnut honey bruschetta!

-- I second the recommendation of Il Gelato di Tre Crispini. This is, without a doubt, the best gelato in Rome. A short distance from the Trevi Fountain, this family-run establishment has an assortment of taste sensations. I recommend a cup with both nocciolo (hazelnut) and armagnac (brandy) gelatos. Although even the straciatella (basically chocolate chip) is terrific!

-- Tre Scalini in the Piazza Navonna lives up to its billing as the best tartufo (sort of an ice cream ball in a chocolate crust, for lack of a better description) in Rome. Get your order at the counter, sit in the Piazza and enjoy the evening scene.

-- Finally, this time of the year I recommend Colline Emiliane, Via Avignonesi 22 (near Piazza Barberini). The pumpkin tortelloni with butter and sage are to die for!

Have a great time . . .

I have a list of places in Rome that people recommended to me in this blog post. Unfortunately I didn't get to go to the most of the places, but here's a post about the places I did go to. I wish I had tried more flavors at San Crispino!

Thanks fellow eaters for the suggestions-I'll let you know how I fared when I return from Italy-Remycat

Theres a great restaurant rightoutside the city gates in Rome called Abruzzi's. If youre at all familiar with Il Mulino in the west Village, its owned by a family member of theirs, but from my experience its more relaxed - less Italin-American/Godfather, and more just regular chill Italian.

Check out I due G in Florence. Excellent food. Can't go wrong. Typical Tuscan fare. The lamb stuffed with artichokes is killer. Everything is always the best. It's near the train station...Via B Cennini. If going on a Saturday ask for Peter to serve you.
