Fast food fries. Which ones are good?
When was the last time you had good fast food fries? For me since the Mickey Dees changeover I have not had any good fries. Anyone have any good ones? Has to be fast food chains, no diners, deli's or dives.

I'm not normally a fan of waffle fries, but I do like the ones at Chick-Fil-A. Not a help to us East Coasters, but In-N-Out makes their fries from scratch and you can even order them to your preferred doneness.

Yes, I order In-N-Out fries well-done. They're pretty good for fast food.
I know it's specifically NOT what you asked (i.e., it's not fast food), but the fries at Houston's are excellent...

on the east coast, white castle makes the only fast-food fries that are remotely palatable and taste somewhat like potato. some of the california places like in-and-out, that cut their own potatoes, are somewhat decent. but getting takeaway fries anywhere is terrible because they go off so quickly...

Jerzee, you are so right! After McD's stopped using beef tallow, fast food fries became insipid. Backyard Burger makes pretty decent curly fries and waffle fries. I can't remember which one is served spicy, but they're pretty good.

Nathan's.

I vote for any number of chains that make fresh-cut fries... In-N-Out out West, Five Guys in the East and Midwest or Penn Station in the Midwest.

Arthur Treacher's. Bar none. I crave them and can't find them in the US...except in Sandusky, Ohio...near Cedar Point.

In addition to the 3 I named above, I'll also second that vote for Chic-Fil-A's waffle fries.
deeoh1 at 3:59PM on 10/18/07
I like Wendy's the best, they actually taste like potatoes to me.
Alm25 at 4:04PM on 10/18/07
Fave: Five Guys
Runner-up: Wendy's

I actually like the fries from Checkers. Not sure what kind of evil concoction goes into them, but they're really good.
Chaoss at 4:18PM on 10/18/07
White Castle and Wendy's for me. I love a meaty potato with a crispy texture.
I'm not sure what they do to the fries at In-N-Out (perhaps it's because I didn't grow up eating them) but like McDs if you don't eat them right then, they go flat too quickly and have a papery texture that just doesn't taste like a freshly cut fry... and McDs leaves a strange aftertaste...
You can always count on FatBurger, too... good stuff!

Bojangle's fried chicken, in the South, has righteous French fries with Cajun seasoning - spicy, and it's sprinkled on the plain fries after cooking, rather than being part of some yucky batter/coating. Oh, and they're cooked in lard (at least they used to be).
emily20008 at 10:36PM on 10/18/07
Wendy's are my faves, and Arby's before they axed the regular fries and went strictly curly. Curlies are ok but I don't want them all the time.
I hate, despise and loathe Burger King's fries. Both the flavor and texture are odd.
AuntJone at 10:36AM on 10/19/07
None of them.
StudentStomach at 11:26AM on 10/19/07
i second Bojangles. Cookout has got the same delicious seasoning.
im not a fan of in n out fries. the texture of fresh cut fries just doesn't appeal to me.
stumbler02 at 11:59AM on 10/19/07
Wow....we really don't have many chains around here in WNY.....most of the places mentioned aren't around here. My first vote would be for Wendy's....I agree with others who said they taste like real potatoes. Second would be Mickey D's, but only when they're fresh.
mepolo at 1:39PM on 10/19/07
Penn Station's are outstanding, and I'm not unhappy with Rally's, which is what Checkers have become around here. Popeye's are okay or better, but it's hard to pass up the mashed potatoes with that gravy (and I am definitely not a mass-produced masher fan).
lemons at 1:59PM on 10/19/07
I agree with AuntJone, Burger King fries are obnoxious. If the only fries in the world were BK fries, I would simply never eat fries again. But the Whopper with Cheese is my favorite fast-food burger...and I like McD fries if they are fresh and hot. This leads to my waiting on an awful lot of drive-through lines.
annien at 3:10PM on 10/19/07
I rarely eat french fries because they destroy my face but if I'm going to sin, I'm going straight to h#ll. My choice is Checkers french fries because they are the only fries on the planet I can eat without ketchup. They are coated in a spice mix, served screaming hot and they have plenty of flavor in addition to great crispness (if you can eat them at one of the tables right there).

Steak-n-Shake and Wendy's
flootsmith at 12:04PM on 10/21/07
I used to work at Steak n shake and when those fries were fresh they were awesome. I live in the east now and don't get them. Steak n Shake is pretty good all around.
coolname at 12:23PM on 10/21/07
P. Terry's! Austin-based chain that always makes their french fries fresh to order. They're thin, salty, crunchy, with just enough of a soft, puffy inside to be satisfying. I always promise myself that I'll save half the bag for later, but it never happens.
Christina at 2:57PM on 10/21/07
Lion's Choice, so long as they don't overseason them (which they often do). Good texture, deep russet flavor. Great fries!
johnjgoddard at 9:07PM on 10/21/07
Cookout fries no doubt. I love that North Carolina chain. Cajun fries would make my nights sooo much better after rehearsals. Chick Fil A, Wendys, and Five Guys are also really good.
Thrashers fries are the best fries in the world, but I'm not sure they count as fast food.
pbisNOTmyname at 9:44PM on 10/21/07
Checkers/Rally's Checkers is called Rallys here in Ohio, They leave the skin on and put seasoning of some sort, they are hands down the best out of all the chains unless I make Jo-Jo fries at home.
DevlChef at 7:15PM on 10/26/07
In Canada we have a chain called New York fries, they're pretty good skin on medium cut fries. Also have a decent selection of toppings such as chili cheese, poutine (cheese curds and gravy), orange cheese sauce and beef gravy.
ag3208 at 8:28PM on 11/06/07
I think it's in its own category of side dish (not much that categorizes it as a fry really applies), but I really do like Burger King fries. Not for their potato-y-ness or any other high and mighty taste cause, I just like 'em.
LizNYC at 7:06PM on 11/12/07
nathans, hands down do a double blind study are the only fast food fries with a fresh cut flavor in ny.best shoestring is now white castle, but nathans krinkle cut skin on rule.If you are a serious fry eater there is a french fry joint on the east side next to sushi park and directly downstairs from toytokyo.they serve fries fries and more fries, fresh cut and 100 differant mayo toppings,a few ketchups, and that french canadian pouline?
who cares these fries will own you, served in a big paper cone swimming in mayo mmmmmmmmm
sharky at 3:04PM on 11/14/07
Chick-fil-A and Five Guys. I get into this debate weekly with my friends.
sawyerriley at 3:31PM on 11/14/07
I gotta go with the Loaded Bacon Cheddar Ranch fries from Checkers/Rally's.
