Anyone got a good Chai recipe?

Chai is so fragrant and almost "creamy" but making it at home usually requires mixing a sugary powder with water or milk.

Anyone got a good recipe for a from-scratch Chai?

Here's how I make mine. Get the Chai teabags from Trader Joes. Boil water and steep tea for recommended amount. While that's going...get a larger teacup than the tea is working in, pour in a one finger shot of sweetened condensed milk with cardamon lightly sprinkled over the top. Pop it in microwave for 20 seconds (just to warm) and then pour tea on top and stir. This will make a more traditional Indian style version of Chai.

What a great idea...thanks! Now...Problem #2 - I don't live anywhere near a TJ but do have Fresh Market, Wild Oats and Whole Foods around. Any brand of Chai you'd recommend that I might be abel to get my hands on?

I prefer the Stash brand of Chai teas myself. The best one is the Double Spice black chai, but that I haven't been able to find lately. Their regular Chai is still good though, as is the decaf vanilla. I steep my tea bags in almost boiling water for about 5 minutes, and then add a drizzle of honey and a splash of milk. I think I'll go make a cup now...

When I was living in Spain, my roommate from India taught me this:
1. Boil about 2 mug's worth of water is a small pot, add loose black tea leaves (or open up a packet of any black tea bag and mix in)
2. Boil for a few minutes, then add sugar, cinnamon stick ,and some cardamon. Let it boil down to about a mug's worth.
3. Remove from heat and add milk, she always did about half tea half milk.
4. Stir and enjoy!

Sorry these aren't exact measurements, but the great thing about chai is that it always comes out good no matter the variation! When I feel like it, I'll add some honey at the end (and not put as much sugar when cooking)

My husband is from india & his parents came to visit & they made chai every morning for us before we had to go to work - it was such a relaxing start to the day - so unlike how I would usually start the days.....but anyways - the way my mother in law would make it is the same way as described in the previous post...always had a creamy consistency & so flavorful - I had forgotten about those lovely chai mornings - will have to make a pot coming up....

As a matter of fact, I do have a good recipe for masala chai. It takes a little bit of effort, but is definitely worth it. You'll find it over at my blog Mental Masala, where I provide two brewing methods, a recipe for a spice blend and a clever way to crush cinnamon sticks (use a tortilla press).

I've made my own using a good brand of chai tea, bags or loose, whichever you prefer. Then, I steep it using hot milk instead of water (needs to steep a little longer than water would) and add as much sugar/splenda as I want. It's delicious, and you can control the milk and tea quality and how much sweetener you want.

Wow...These are great ideas! Stupid question time...Is there caffeine in Chai?

yup...chai is made with tea (i make it with loose black tea not teabags...not really authentic chai if it's made with teabags) and tea contains caffeine

Yep. I love chai, especially when it's chocolate chai, so here's a recipe I'd recommend. :)

I love the chai from Numi Tea, Whole Foods carries it. It's got just the right amount of spice. It's packaged in teabags, or they sell it loose on their web site I think. I usually put the teabag in a pot on the stove with half water, half milk, and a little bit of sugar, and heat it up until it's steaming.

Yum!!

hi guys..

My way of making tea is very simple & I use to take milk with tea. Just take a cup of boiled water with sugar is already added while boiling, then I dip tea bags in the cup & a little milk. I love my Oolong tea. For more info regarding tea p/l visit my site http://mytealogic.com/
