Would you rather give up chocolate or cheese?
Ah, the power of both...I feel happily addicted. Chocolate is not a daily eats while cheese is a mainstay. Let's soften the question to---which could you give up for one year?
I suppose I could do without the chocolate, but don't you dare mess with my cheese intake!

chocolate. i'm allergic to caffeine so i can't eat it anyway. :)
lexophile at 3:25PM on 09/23/07
I pretty much eat both everyday. But I think I could get a sweet fix with an alternate food if I am forced to. I can't think of anything, though to replace my cheese ur
Mich23 at 3:53PM on 09/23/07
I pretty much eat both everyday. I could get a sweet fix with something else, but nothing could replace my cheese. So bye, bye chocolate!
Mich23 at 3:56PM on 09/23/07
I think I'd have to drop chocolate. I don't each much of it anyway, since I'm not big on sweets. Even if I ate more chocolate, it would have a long way to go before it won out over all types of cheese.
Nicholas H at 4:20PM on 09/23/07
Wow. This is a hard one. The thought of no pizza for a year is terrifying, so I'd have to go with giving up chocolate. But that would totally suck too - no dark chocolate square after lunch?? Waaah!
K at 6:08PM on 09/23/07
Easy for me -- chocolate would go. Once in a great while I'll have a bite of the good dark stuff, but I really don't care for chocolate. I could never give up cheese, I like way too many kinds!
ride&cook at 7:50PM on 09/23/07
Cheese-- I'm mildly lactose intolerant, so I rarely eat it anyway, while dark chocolate is usually pretty acceptable. I love cheese, but if it's not in my daily life, I don't miss it.
Christina at 8:14PM on 09/23/07
Chocolate, for sure. Cheese is amazing and there are so many better sweets than chocolate.
eatnutmeg at 9:44PM on 09/23/07
Chocolate.
paris221966 at 10:08PM on 09/23/07
No brainer: chocolate. I love any and all types of cheese but chocolate I can easily do without.
rosielucchesini at 10:11PM on 09/23/07
Chocolate would have to go. While I really like it, I love a few bites of Blue Castello, Parano, Old Amsterdam, or Gruyere while I'm cooking dinner.
Stephanie at 10:27PM on 09/23/07
definitely give up chocolate. can't imagine giving up pizza, pasta (mac n cheese especially!), sandwiches (grilled cheese!), mexican food, everything with cheese!
stumbler02 at 10:28PM on 09/23/07
Adios, chocolate. I don't like you all that much, although I occassionally enjoy a bite or two of some good 70%. But I don't like you enough to keep you around and the expense of my one true love...
Cheese, I love you. I would die without you.
charm city cupcake at 11:49PM on 09/23/07
Geez, there's a definite trend here! :)
Christina at 2:36AM on 09/24/07
Since most of us could do without choc for a year if we had to, what would be the "substitute"? I might go with caramel..
JEP at 6:34AM on 09/24/07
I'd have to go with giving up cheese... I love it, but I love chocolate more. I don't have it that often, but there's no way I could give up dark chocolate for a year.
Alm25 at 8:23AM on 09/24/07
I (almost) gave up chocolate...
And I almost gave up cheese...
I love both too much to give them up entirely...
Sara - Piperita at 9:43AM on 09/24/07
Probably chocolate. I wouldn't be happy, but I do love cheese in almost all its varieties.
jpolk at 11:08AM on 09/24/07
chocolate. I hate to even think about it, though.
sawyerriley at 1:42PM on 09/24/07
Cheese, glorious cheese! Take my chocolate, please, I want the cheese!
aungeinphx at 1:43PM on 09/24/07
chocolate. i love both but cheese can be eaten savory and sweet and is more versatile. plus I have learned to eat less chocolate b/c my husband does not like it so now there are plently of desserts w/out chocolate that I like
cristi at 3:06PM on 09/24/07
Chocolate. I would almost rather give up my husband than give up cheese.
Jeana at 3:29PM on 09/24/07
Cheese.
You can stash chocoloate everywhere -- desk at work, night-table, carry-on luggage, purse at funerals, pocket at the theatre. You know, a little bit of 70% Madagascar chocolate, or 75% Tanzanian chocolate, or a Green & Black's Mayan Gold. But some fresh buffala mozzarella? What are you going to do with that when the going gets tough?
Chocolate will take you through Armageddon!
earlydrive at 4:20PM on 09/24/07
Wow--we are in the grips of both--Jeana would rather give-up her husband than cheese :)
Thanks for sharing your reasons--remember, I am only asking for a one year commitment---then you could choose to do without the other!
JEP at 4:38PM on 09/24/07
I don't know what life would be like without cheese, even though I am mildly lactose intolerant I don't think I could do without it for a year or even a couple days for that matter. Chocolate on the other hand has never really tickled my fancy, so ciao chocolate!
kitchenlove at 5:41PM on 09/24/07
Chocolate of course. There are too many tasty cheeses to give up any of them!
watchforbears at 10:49PM on 09/24/07
I am surprised to find myself saying chocolate too. It is sad but true. I could surely get sweet fix from something else but what could possibly replace cheese???
izzy's mama at 10:57PM on 09/24/07
Maybe it's a bias sample and all the cheese lovers are coming out of the closet? Anyway, I'm with them. Couldn't live without cheese.
emily20008 at 10:58PM on 09/24/07
I did say "almost"....Anyway, a year, forever, it doesn't matter, I wouldn't give up cheese for a month!
Jeana at 12:13PM on 09/25/07
I would give up chocolate. No contest!
Vitello Tonnato at 1:28PM on 09/25/07
Definitely cheese. Easy decision. I eat chocolate almost every day. But cheese is a rarity. I gave it up so I could fit more chocolate in. But I would miss feta....
KateC at 2:25PM on 09/25/07
in my brain, the decision to pick chocolate or cheese is like making a choice between having dinner with mark twain or rosie. twain would be deep, dark natural chocolate and rosie would be cheese food product.
olddad at 3:07PM on 09/25/07
I love cheese, but chocolate wins every time. Haagen Dazs chocolate ice cream is the best in the world! Imagine never eating that again! Horrors!
Lavendergirl at 3:14PM on 09/25/07
Although I am a little lactose intolerant, I would have to say chocolate should go. I LOVE CHEESE AND WINE!
tuffjet at 3:57PM on 09/25/07
I like cheese and all, but as a woman, I have to have my monthly dose of chocolate. Am I right, ladies? Cheese doesn't make you feel all happy and endorphan-ish. But alas, I am only one person.
kcorder3 at 4:03PM on 09/25/07
I have given up both and I don't miss them. I gave up cheese because of the cholesterol, and I gave up chocolate because it doesn't interest me anymore. The tryanny of chocoholics just did me in. Now if I take a nibble of either one, I don't like the sensation, the mouth-feel of chocolate or cheese. Weird, huh?
doglover at 4:31PM on 09/25/07
chocolate. wouldn't miss it at all. i'd die w/o cheese.
j at 5:17PM on 09/25/07
The dairy protein Casein contains opiates. Opiates break down during digestion, releasing Casomorphins. Sound familiar? Casomorphins have one-tenth the opiate strength of Morphine.
So people who crave cheese (me, me!) are really mini Morphine junkies =p
onedaylingers at 5:20PM on 09/25/07
I lurve me some chocolate, but there is no way in HELL I could ever give up cheese.
What a cruel question to pose in the first place!!
klg19 at 6:15PM on 09/25/07
Oh wow, people are really loyal to their cheese it seems! It's so hard, because they're both in so many things, but cheese probably winds up in more things. At face value though (eaten alone) I like chocolate more, but like another commenter said, i couldn't give up pizza for a year (I should try though..)
So chocolate it is...sigh.

Maybe I change the question to one month...a week :)
JEP at 6:24PM on 09/25/07
chocolate. cheese is the greatest, most diverse food product there is. besides, it's alive and we should eat more living things.
chefman
chefman at 7:09PM on 09/25/07
I'd easily give up the cheese. I never ate it as a kid (chinese) and always picked it off my pizzas.
chocolate on the other hand....I have some dark pieces nearly daily. to go without it is to cease to live.
mercuryhime at 8:51PM on 09/25/07
This reminds me of a conversation starter I'd bring up over cheese fondue in college.
Would you give up beer or cheese?
Unfortunately, missing the point, the first person to respond said "Oh, well, I could always drink whiskey, or wine, blah, blah, blah..." It skewed the results of my survey. From that moment on, beer was simply a conveyance for alcohol, and not multi-faceted beverage with as many complex, flavorful incarnations as cheese.
That said, as divine as a chunk of dark, after dinner chocolate may be, I could never give up cheese.
...or beer.
ajeys at 8:49AM on 09/26/07
I'm allergic to chocolate, so I already gave it up.
Just so all the chocolate lovers know, there is a threat of chocolate going extinct. Because of it's global semi-addictive popularity, the need for the plants to grow in very particular soil and atmospheric conditions, that only exists in very limited places on the planet, and it's being overfarmed it could go bye-bye in our life time since the nutrients are being unsustainably depleted.
spanklin at 12:35PM on 09/26/07
Hmmm. Can't choose. Cheese is a daily staple, from the mild to the wild and gooey. While chocolate may not be everyday... none for a year? No way! Sorry if this doesn't help your survey.
Lonnie at 3:15PM on 09/26/07
Chocolate - poof gone. Although I do have an occasional weakness for REALLY good dark chocolate. The chocolate that is so dark that light itself can not escape. Of course you can only eat centimeter by centimeter squares of the stuff at a time... so I guess it wouldn't be too bad to give it up.
enjyns at 8:42PM on 09/26/07
Omg, how can you ask me to choose between cheese and chocolate?! I suppose I would choose cheese though. Can live without chocolates (can't believe I'm writing this), but I can't live without nice cheesy stuff every now and then.
jenneke at 9:41AM on 09/27/07
I like chocolate and all, but I'd give it up in a heartbeat if it meant I couldn't have cheese. Chocolate I like; Cheese I LOVE.
rockykay at 12:17PM on 09/27/07
I'll take the cheese over chocolate any day! I love chocolate, but there is nothing like cheese, besides I could always replace it with cheesecake. wink
