Where to eat in Dallas, Texas?

I'm heading to Dallas this weekend for the first time -- where should I go eat? I'm down for anything.

Wow! Where to start? There are so many good restaurants in Dallas. For a great steak, head to Bob's (the one on Lemmon just north of downtown, not the one in the burbs). Also you should definitely check out Stephan Pyles' restaurant (of the same name) and get the ceviche sampler - out of this world! For some great sushi, go to Teppo on lower Greenville Ave. - it is a small place so you might have to wait unless you go either pretty early or rather late, or get a spot at the sushi bar.

I am from Dallas and these are just some of my personal faves, but if you want more specifics or suggestions on other types of food or atmosphere, post more comments/questions and I'm glad to help!

Anything, really: bbq, bakeries, tex-mex, donuts, fancy, etc. Food/restaurants that are unique to that area.

OK, here are some more of my picks:
BBQ: Peggy Sue BBQ. A lot of people will probably recommend Sonny Bryan's, but I don't think it's anything special.

Bakeries: Celebrity Bakery or Breadwinner's, which is also great (and popular) for brunch

Tex-Mex: Mi Cocina (the one at Highland Park Village is a hot spot. Great margaritas. Celebrity Bakery is also in Highland Park Village.) I also like Javier's which is more interior Mexican food, but I must admit I enjoy the bar atmosphere more than going there for the food.

For fancy suggestions, besides Stephan Pyles, I would suggest Abacus (if you've ever watched Top Chef, Tre Wilcox is the Executive Chef and this restaurant is outstanding and truly unique to Dallas. Might be hard to get into given Tre's recent TV exposure.)

I also love, love, love Lola - It is a cozy atmosphere in kind of an old house. They have wonderful tasting menus and I have always found it a bargain in relation to the quality of the food and wines.

You might also check out La Duni which is kind of a Mexican/Latin fusion (not fancy) - also famous for their desserts and cuatro leches cake. There are two locations in Uptown.

An awesome hole-in-the-wall Mexican place: Herrerra's on Maple at Oak Lawn. Greasy spoon: Kel's Kitchen & Diner on Forest at the tollway. Burgers: Twisted Root Burger Company in Deep Ellum or Jakes Burgers on McKinney uptown.

i like mia's and mi cocina for mexican, and sonny bryan's for barbecue. mecca for breakfast or coffee shop lunch. last month's texas monthly reviewed the porch in the knox/henderson area as having some heat right now (upscale comfort).

CiCi's Pizza: All you can eat for only $3.99!

- Unless they raised their prices since I was last there.
- Also, that works a lot better when sung with the jingle.
- Also, not seriously.

CFS in Dallas

Allgood Café
2934 Main St (Deep Ellum)
Dallas, TX 75226
214-742-5362
Looking at the concert posters and other memorabilia on the walls, you’d swear you were in Austin. The CFS is a thin piece of top-quality tenderloin covered with a sheer, flaky crust. You can cut it with a fork. The mashed potatoes and other sides are artfully prepared. It’s upscale restaurant food slumming in a Deep Ellum diner.

Ozona Grill & Bar
4615 Greenville Ave., Dallas
214-265-9105
The patio at the Ozona location on Greenville is one of Dallas’s most charming happy hour spots, when the weather cooperates. The CFS is huge and pocked with deep chicken-fried craters. Unfortunately, the crust sometimes slips off the meat completely. The creamy garlic mashed potatoes make up for other defects.

Babe’s Chicken Dinner House
104 North Oak Roanoke 817-491-2900
456 Belt Line Rd # 171, Garland - (972) 496-1041
There are only two things on Babe’s menu--some of the best fried chicken in the state and a terrific chicken fried steak. And no matter which one you pick, the crust looks exactly the same. There are several DFW locations, but the original is located in an old warehouse in the small town of Roanoke, half an hour north of Fort Worth. "Babe" is the owner’s nickname.

Babe's Chicken Dinner House is great; keep in mind that it's BYOB as well.

For Dallas all I can think of right now is Burger House next to SMU. They do those ultraflat diner-style greaseburgers that I can't seem to find in New York.

Celebration Restaurant

All the food is made from scratch and you can have seconds of any entree!

Dallas has the best steakhouses in the country and I mean NYC, SF, Kansas City, Chicago, or name another city, but Dallas is THE place. Be a Texan--eat red meat and start at Three Forks, or Sullivan's on the tollway north of Loop 635 or Bob's Chop House and Del Frisco's are all fabulous and have great wine lists. For a tasting menu or prie fixe try Bijoux's in the center at Lovers and Inwood. For named chefs, try Dean Fearings' or Stephen Pyles' restaurants. For Barbeque, go to Shady Oaks on 75 at Park or Parker (they are successive exits) which is north of where the George Bush Freeway intersects with 75. For really good raw or fried oysters and other seafood, try S&D Oyster Co. (very casual). For killer fried chicken, it's Bubba's across from SMU (walk up service). For Italian Mi Piacci or Patrizio's are good by Dallas standards. For Tex-Mex Ojeda's has good food and for a chain, El Fenix has pretty decent cheese enchilidas.
