What do you give a chef for his birthday?

He is a pastry chef with a culinary degree, pretty quiet and reserved at first, but then loosens up when he gets to know you. I thought a very nice bottle of wine, but then thought any sort of food related item might not fly - especially from me, a person who loves to eat, but certainly a foodie in training...Any ideas? We have only recently become friends.

How about a gift card for a book store? I know that all cooks, regardless of skill level, can always find one more cookbook they need to buy.

Williams-Sonoma gift card

Honestly, I don't see anything wrong with a nice bottle of wine. Just go to a wine store and ask someone for help, I know nothing about wine other than red, white, and rose and thats what I've done in the past and it has always worked out well.

When I graduated from high school I also got a very touching gift from a family friend, she gave me this antique box and inside she included some family recipes that were "secret" and special to her. It was very sweet.

Wine is always good. But what if you were to find some ingredients for pastry that are hard to find, and make a gift basket. Or maybe an unusual pan, or some antique pastry implement, or even a very old, rare baking cookbook. I'm sure he will appreciate whatever you decide upon.

Vanilla good good good Vanilla or vanilla beans. It is like gold. Gift cert to penzeys.

restaurant gift certificate! even chefs get tired of cooking

Minus 8 Icewine vinegar - it is delicious and has both savory and sweet applications.

Thanks for the ideas everyone, excellent. I think I could do basket with all - wine, cookbook, pastry implements, etc. Awesome, yay!

Gift certificate to Sur la Table or Williams-Sonoma.

I second the cert to penzey's.
