Vegan recommendations in NYC. Please. Thanks.

Looking for NYC vegan recommendations: strictly vegan restaurant or any place that can be vegan friendly, also something veg. in Chinatown or other veg. ethnic cuisine (really, anything). Go crazy, we saved for a good meal, but we (well I) am also poor and love cheap dives. Please don't respond with vegan bashing. My girlfriend is vegan, she is great. I work as a cook, expound on wonders of duck cracklins, etc, and she kisses me and I love to cook vegan as much smoking pork shoulders.

Check out the site SuperVegan, and be sure to use their Vegan Restaurant Finder. I am sure you'll find this to be a most incredible resource.

angelica kitchen - sometimes a little bland, sometimes awesome. 100% vegan
kate's - trashy vegetarian junk food. always good!
red bamboo - my favorite, but only if you like fake meat
chennai garden - mind-blowing south indian
hangawi - vegan korean, a bit pricey. also, for your fancy meal out, i'm pretty sure that grammercy tavern does a vegetarian tasting menu (that they could probably also make vegan?)

i'd avoid the 'vegetarian' places in chinatown - always seems like veggies covered in doughnuts in a super-sweet sauce.

pure food and wine

thanks very much. this is a great place to start. I forgot about the grammercy tavern veg tasting menu, I bet they could do something vegan with proper reservations and polite request.

too bad about Chinatown, my girlfriend also eats virtually no sugar of any kind if possible, so it seems that may not be a good idea. I really wanted to eat in Chinatown, maybe I can get some dumplings somewhere at least. It is a short trip anyway and I have a friend at Momofuku, which I know is not "authentic" Asian of anykind, so I will certainly get some pork there, and hopefully a pastrami sandwich might accidentally cross my path at some point and that chance meeting should be pretty great for me but bad for the sandwich.

If anyone has anymore, please offer, but thanks to you both, Young and kellyxrene.

and thanks ceforrester, slipped past me while I was writing the last comment.

I really enjoyed angelicas kitchen although I think they didnt serve any alcohol which was a shame. We also tried a place called 'counter' which was a bit poncy but good.

I second the vote for Pure Food and Wine - but it is rather $$$
Counter is also great, but a little pricey.
Kate's is awesome comfort food
Madras Mahal or Pongal on Lexington near 28th serve kosher vegetarian South Indian food - most of which is vegan. Both of them are WAAAAY better than Chennai Garden.

I'm pretty sure you could get something vegan at Village Natural. I love the spaghetti and wheat balls, and they also serve organic beer and sulfite-free wine.

you are good peoples. thanks for all the help.

@Charm City: I saw some pictures of the dosas at Madras Mahal, they look so good. there was a vegan S. Indian place in Austin for a while when I used to live there that was awesome and I miss it greatly (they closed a while ago, not because they were losing money but just because they were tired of it) and when I saw the Madras Mahal's food, it reminded me of it and I will certainly be eating there at some point next weekend.

gonna choose between Pure Food and Wine and Hangawi for the nice meal. I really want to try that tasting menu at Gramercy since I had a wonderful meal there about four years ago, but another time I guess.

My girlfriend (and me too) are really excited. We were supposed to go up for a long weekend last April but our flights got canceled 3 times in 2 days due to weather and we were really depressed. It's been a few years for both of us since we have visited the city and our friends and I know these recommendations will keep us full and happy.

thanks again everybody.

Another option you might want to consider for your fancier meal is Candle 79, the more upscale branch of the Candle Cafe. I had a meal there not long ago, and thought it was delightful, despite the fact that I'm a pretty dedicated carnivore. The food was delicate, interesting, well-prepared and satisfying. In addition, they have a good list of organic wines and beers, and they make refreshing cocktails as well. The ambience is lovely too. All in all, a good place for a special night out:

gobo on sixth avenue by the west fourth street subway stop.

I've never been there myself, but the V-Spot Cafe in Brooklyn is very highly regarded (and always busy!).

I had a tasty lunch at TeaNY a few years ago.

Angelika Kitchen is always good. Their take-out window is a great resource as well when the restaurant is packed. Try the walnut lentil pate.
