Restaurants in the Red Hook/Tivoli/Kingston NY area...

Know any and feel like sharing?

Hi Christina!
Are you interested in Rhinebeck as well? If you are, let me tell you about a few goodies: Gigi Trattoria, an excellent and somewhat pricey italian/Mediterranean joint where Mario Batali has been known to guest-chef and one of the owners was the food stylist for the movie Big Night; Calico, a tiny patisserie and luncheon cafe, Osaka, a big new sushi/hibachi joint, and there's another sushi bar on Garden Street which has a branch in Tivoli; both are excellent. There are a lot of great restos in the area because CIA grads settle here after graduating from Hyde Park, about ten miles down route 9. Of course, there are the fabulous restaurants of the CIA as well, altho' I would recommend reservations at this time of year.

Unfortunately, the only place worth eating in Kingston is my house.

That's not true (although I take your word that you have a fine table :), there's quite a few good places to eat in Kingston.

Le Canard Enchainé is a very very good little French brasserie, very authentic and fresh with locally sourced and seasonal items.

There is a wood fired pizza place called Picnic Pizza that makes excellent and authentic Neapolitan style pies.

A brand new Indian place that cooks just about everything in their real tandoori oven just opened up there. I don't know what it's called but can find out and will post it. My mom went and loved it, and she's an Indian-food freak (and she's been to India).

There is also the Hoffman House. I've never eaten there but it's a historical landmark, the house was built in 1711 and worth seeing just for this. The menu is continental American, so expect a lot of steaks and stuff.

There are also a couple good bakeries, among them a Bread Alone which is upstate NY's fancy pants trendy bakery, and justifiably so, they do good work.

Thanks, annien and seyo! I'll have to check these places out next time I'm nearby. : )
