Recommendations for a good bread knife??
Recently I hacked away at a crusty baguette to make cubes for a bread pudding (Lemon Spice with Sauteed Peaches, if you must know), and I went through my whole drawer of Ikea crappies and no-name terribles and barely got away without sawing off a finger. I would really appreciate a recommendation for a trusty, affordable bread knife...

Forschner makes both an 8" and a 10 1/4" bread knife. After my chef's knife, these are my absolute favorite tools in the kitchen. I use them to effortlessly slice homemade bread, to split cakes into layers, to cut tomatoes into paper-thin slices, etc., etc.
You can find them on Amazon.com for $16-25 -- definitely money well spent.

I completely agree with Dominic. The Forschner 10 1/4 is recommended by Cooks Illustrated/America's test kitchen (as are the Forschner chefs and paring knives--and at less than $5 for the paring knife I recommend that too!)
I also have the 8-inch chefs and Santoku and am more pleased with those 4 knives than our set of Henckels easily costing 4 times more.

Just remember that it needs to be serrated - the scallops on mine are fairly large - and the idea is to let the knife do the work as you put your energy into horizontal strokes, rather than pushing down. (Well, yes, a little downward movement with the blade is necessary, but the big deal is the back-and-forth movement. )

Thanks, everyone! Great recommendations--I'm out to get my Forschner this weekend!
