Plain 'Ol Coffee...

We've considered our drink & cheesecake choices. Is it reasonable we come clean about how we drink coffee? Caffeinated or, black or, sweetened, how many cups in a day, affect your sleep?
I drink about 4 cups a day with no problem sleeping. Just a little low-fat milk and a packet of Splenda. For years it was condensed milk and two sugars but no more.
By the way, let's exclude all talk about designer lattes. That can get way out of hand. I should know, being a Seattle native.

I require 12 oz brewed regular bold coffee of the day before noon. I purchase this at a local coffee shop. I love coffee but realize this amount is my max tolerance level :(

When I have coffee, I prefer the kind I grew up with: Vietnamese brewed coffee with lots of condensed milk and ice. Though now I am more of a tea person.

Plain, black coffee - preferably a bit on the strong side - in large amounts. I'd love to lie and tell you it's some uber-fantastic blend of beans grown some place incredibly important, but yeah. Nope. Mostly Folgers/office coffee/whatever is hot and available (and being hot ain't exactly a deal-breaker some days).

Always the fully-leaded variety. Decaf is a cruel joke made up by one of those "morning people" that I can't deal with.

When I have it, I drink American coffee black & strong. Most of the time I make myself a traditional cappuccino, though -- 3 oz milk, steamed and frothed to two 1oz. shots of good espresso. No sugar, thanks :-) Sorry for bringing up an espresso-based drink, czken, but in this day and age, I hardly consider my choice designer!

Loathed coffee until I was past 30 - loved coffee-flavored things, but coffee was nasty and sour. Friend of mine, for whom I'd cooked a fair bit, challenged me to make good coffee. This led to a coffee grinder and a Chemex. I need to have it freshly made. Caffeine is seldom an issue for me except with expresso-type drinks after 9 p.m., when I discovered relatively recently that it really did interfere to varying degrees with quality of sleep. I suspect it's an age-related problem, sigh.... Interesting that regular restaurant coffee taken after a meal doesn't bother me at all. Are they sneaking in decaf without telling us?

I drink one 8 oz. cup of home brewed Starbucks coffee every morning. I drink French roast, black and very strong. It gives me my morning jolt. The only "designer" coffee I drink, is a cafe mocha. I have it only in social situations, not at home.

I drink two cups a day, every day. I also use a Chemex and grind my coffee fresh - Trader Joe's shade grown French roast is my current favorite. No sugar, just a splash of whole milk. But if I drink the stuff after 4 or 5 p.m., I'm useless for sleeping.

I drink two to three cups of good strong coffee in the morning. Just a little unsweetened soy milk in it.

does anyone else think starbucks over roasts their coffee giving it a burnt taste?

I drink one very strong cup of coffee in the morning -- fresh ground, French press (though I was recently given a Toddy system, which I haven't tried yet), with 2 oz. half and half and 2 oz. of fat-free half and half. I drink it very slowly, and often have some left in the cup come mid-afternoon, but my rule is that I have to switch to water by 3. Coffee after 3, and I'm up till 6 the next morning.

My coffee is one of my favorite things in the world. And I think I feel about good iced cappucino the way most people seem to feel about chocolate

I agree to some extent, Kbear. I really like iced coffe during the summer, but I've always found that Starbucks really overroast the coffee in their iced range and it tastes so burnt I actually can't drink it. However when I have hot coffee from Starbucks either it isn't so burnt or I don't taste it anymore (it's not the best coffee in the world, but I disagree with those who say it's the worst - let's all remember Nescafé Instant Decaf!).

I drink 2-3 cups of of black (no sugar) coffee everyday. Not a fan of flavored coffees or coffees with cream/milk. Much of my coffee comes from a local shop which has an excellent selection of coffees from different parts of the world.

I purchased a Toddy maker this last spring and use it CONSTANTLY! grew up drinking iced coffee in the summer and I'm still addicted. one splenda and a bit of fat free 1/2 and 1/2 . I buy my beans from a local coffee shop and usually use tanzanian peaberry although, for Xmas last year i splurged on a 1/2 lb of real Jamacian Blue Mountain. and for my Bday a 1/2 lb of Kenyan AAA. Good coffee is just as important to me as good wine is to alot of people.

I have one cup of home-brewed decaf with milk and splenda every morning. I like Starbucks decaf House Blend.

Kbear, I am totally with you. Starbucks coffee always tastes burnt yet overly acidic to me. I think they actually roast it this way so that their taste is "branded" - bear in mind there's a huge number of Americans who never drank "good" coffee before they started going to Starbucks. All the folks I know who drink Starbucks coffee (from the stores; their beans are quite different than their store brew) are addicted to that flavor, and don't enjoy other coffee as much, even other "better" coffee. I can't stand the stuff, though I would definitely take Starbucks over bodega coffee or Dunkin' Donuts.

We buy 100% columbian beans and grind them just before brewing. A tiny squeeze of honey and a small splash of 1/2 and 1/2. One 12 oz. insulated mug taken to work will do it for the day.

Most mornings its just Folger's half-caff in a travel mug, with splenda and non-dairy creamer. More than that gives me palpitations (yes, I am getting old). Occasionally we splurge and get some French Roast or Sumatra. Dark roast coffee is the best!

I did an experiment and found that if I use good decaf (hello, Melitta), I can drink half-caf in the morning, and I don't notice a major difference from full strength. That said, when it comes to iced coffee (drinking one right now), it has to be large, and certain Dunkin Donuts shops make it better than others! No sugar for me...I dropped it cold turkey after going to Cafe DuMonde in New Orleans about 5 years ago and discovered that if there's real milk or half and half, I don't miss the sweetness one bit.

I might get kicked off of the site for this, but admittedly, i don't really like the exotic coffees or other drinks that those that you woudl buy at Starbucks. I hate to admit this, but I love the coffee that you can get from the VI or Perkins. It's pathetic, but maybe because that is what I grew up on when I was old enough to have coffee, but not old enough to drink and my friends and I would go out and enjoy Perkins (they were open 24 hours). Crazy, I know.

I drank coffee all the time at my old summer office jobs, but this entire summer at my new job has been coffee-free! When I drank it though, I liked it black...no additions.

Chew on That

Coffee, strong and black. Sometimes one or two raw sugar packets if it's particularly strong.

I am super sensitive to caffeine, so I only drink decaf, and only on occasion at that. Lavazza's decaf is really good and uses the swiss-water method of decafination. And I always drink it black.

As a Canadian I have to make the obligatory Tim Horton's reference.
Tim Horton's, double double with milk. It tastes different in a travel mug than it does in their paper cup.

Occasionally Starbucks. I like some of their seasonal drinks, but the raspberry latte this summer tasted like cough medicine to me and there's one Christmas-themed one that I don't like (can't remember which). I do like their coffee but rarely drink it.

I can't drink coffee late in the day, and 1-2 cups is enough. Sometimes it helps me focus, other times it makes me jittery. When I make coffee at home I use sugar or stevia, no artificial sweeteners. I don't need it daily. Most days I can take it or leave it, some days I NEED it.

I started drinking coffee when I was about 8 years old....I know, gasp. We're Italian and as a child who lived with her grandparents, company were always dropping by. I loved the little red china coffee cup in my nona's buffet, so I begged to have coffee with everyone. They let me have...black, no cream, no sugar. I think they thought this would deter me. Nope. Just grew up enjoying black coffee, no sugar.

I drink coffee for pleasure only, caffeine doesn't bother me. Generally I drink about 2 cups a day when I make it. I buy Starbucks beans and grind before brewing. I love strong coffee. If I go to Starbucks in the warm weather, I get the iced espresso with no water. Ah, love the strong beans!

Coffee late at night doesn't seem to bother me as far as sleep goes, but I rarely have coffee late.

Really hot just ground Pinon coffee (New Mexico) made in a French Press.
Only one 8 oz. cup per day...any more, and I won't sleep.

2 cups of black coffee every morning. After that I stayed fueld by green tea.

I hate milk and sugar in my coffee UNLESS it is "ca phe sua da," or Iced Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk.
