Pancakes versus French toast — your favorite?

The diner down the street makes great French toast on Sunday mornings (I make the distinction because I've had it on different days at different times, and it's inconsistent). The chef also has a great pancake recipe. So, many times it's tough to choose. Wish they had a plate with both.

What would be your selection? (It's OK to say "oatmeal," too.)

I would have the French toast if it was made from brioche. Otherwise, I would order waffles, preferably blueberry. (okay, so most diners would not offer these, but I can dream, can't I?)

I'm going with the pancakes, although I like both. To me, pancakes are just more versatile; you can go sweet or savory. I don't mind topping a pancake with an egg although I don't think I would FT (it already has an egg coating and yes, I know pancakes have eggs in them). I could go the sweet route just as easily. I can justify eating a "stack of cakes" but how on earth do you conceal the fact that you're eating 4-6 slices of fried bread!!! ? Pancakes are an old friend "come to the rescue" when I forget to make a new loaf of bread. You can whip them up in ten minutes. FT isn't so user friendly to those of us who have other things to do besides inspecting the larder everyday.

I prefer French Toast.. pancakes, I think I want them, but then I only eat one and realize i didn't really want it. And I like my french toast w/ maple syrup and just a touch of powdered sugar.

If they were both excellent offerings, I'd go for the FT -- it is harder to do well than pancakes, so I find that pancakes are consistently better at my breakfast spots. But a nice, custardy French Toast with real maple syrup can be heavenly!

French Toast! But to me, it's never as good at home as in a diner, they seem to have a knack for it.

Cinnamon raisin french toast with butter & maple syrup.

"Custardy" is the key to good French Toast, my choice. So good, especially on Sunday.

This reminds me of the late comedian Mitch Hedberg: “As a comedian, you have to start your act out strong, but you also have to save some of the good stuff for later... You can’t be like pancakes, all exciting at first, but by the end you’re f***in’ sick of ‘em.”

I choose french toast, though I love blueberry pancakes as well. My mom makes really small pancakes (about the size of a mug round) and I can eat millions of them.. lol.

I'm a pancake girl for life.

I love my pancakes! I love them whether I use Jiffy or Bisquick when I make breakfast. Love them A LOT better than IHOP's pancakes.

It depends on what kind of bread I have handy and or what kind of other I have to throw in the waffles.
Sometimes I make both so people can choose what they like.

Pancakes. Preferably pancakes with blueberries cooked inside.

Pancakes. French toast is always delicious, but somehow I crave it far less often...

Thanks folks.

My mom used make cinnamon swirl French toast (that is, when I wasn't requesting Matzo Brei -- a big mazto pancake).

OK, more specific French toast question -- have you had it in a casserole? And, do you prefer it that way?

Casserole - yes! Great for serving to a crowd. What it is is bread pudding, cher!

Which is good sweet or savory, depending on your meal, mood, and purpose.

if i'm making it myself - then french toast with some fresh challah. but if i'm out, i go for pancakes. i find restaurant made french toast too sweet generally.

I'd sure ask the diner if I could get a plate half and half. I only like my own, very custardy, French toast, which is sufficiently sweet that it doesn't require syrup. Spouse makes French toast with salsa.

French toast for me thanks. I cant stand pancakes, they always look good but for some reason after 2 bites I've had enough!

French toast has never let me down, so chalk another one up for that. I'm in the "they sound pretty good oh man ugh why did I order these again?" pancake camp like a few of the previous posters.

And a big ol' hi five to chlamers for the Mitch reference.

I like French toast better. I've never had it the "custardy" way -- sounds good! I like to put different flavors in the batter, though, like lemon, and then put lemon butter and powdered sugar on top. I also don't usually feel too well if I eat fluffy pancakes. I prefer them thinner and more crisp -- and with chocolate chips in them!

No contest - French toast over pancakes any day! Pancakes are so heavy, and to me, less flavorful. I adore good french toast - crispy on the outside, soft and eggy inside. Definitely best made with brioche or challah; cinnamon bread is good too.

I *detest* pancakes. This fact has brought me many a strange look (especially from my Swedish boyfriend who swears up and down that Swedish pancakes are some how better - I steadfastly refuse to try them.) I'll eat the French toast in moderation, but you can keep that disgusting, vile semi-liquid that is syrup. *ESPECIALLY* if it's maple. Ugh.

Pancakes all the way!!! I have never been a fan of French Toast. It may have something to do with my former aversion to eggs, but I don't see the appeal. But pancakes come in all sorts of flavors...chocolate chip, blueberry, banana, cottage cheese! And they're all so delicious.

Chew on That

Pancakes. It's the first word that crosses my mind every Saturday morning.

French toast if it is on Hawaiian or sourdough bread, if not? Thin apple pancakes with a powdered sugar dusting!

Thanks for weighing in on this discussion!

When I make French toast at home, I use French bread. I also use a little vanilla rice milk and a teaspoon or two of agave nectar. For spices, I use nutmeg and a little cinnamon.

As far as the pancakes go, I make them pretty plain. However, I have Dorie's Waffles book and the vanilla waffles are excellent!

What do you do to doctor up your breakfast treats?

I make pancakes with buttermilk and a mixture of pastry and whole wheat flour - sometimes with blueberries (if they are in season). I only make french toast if I have challah or brioche in the house, thick sliced, started on the stovetop and finished in the oven.
