Olives, love 'em or leave 'em out?
I'm getting a kick out or reading AG Adam D. Roberts' just released book! I can relate to his friend in the 3rd chaper who is he trying to convince to "expand her food palate". The olive senerio is totally me--"olives are just wrong". My limited olive exposure is this: few chopped on salad & pizza & the times I'd stick black olives on my fingers while waiting for Thanksgiving dinner. Olives remain in my "no thanks dept". Do you eat this fruit? AG's book is pure joy to read--please buy!

Must.
Have.
Olives.
And must eat olives thrown my way by those who don't like olives.

You can have mine, then. I tried, really tried, but I just can't stand the taste of olives. If they're minced to smithereens I can eat them hidden in a dish.

I'm quite specific about olives. I absolutely love Nyons olives, which are salt cured, a little wrinkley, and have a gorgeous texture. But that love doesn't extend to olives in general. I don't especially like olives that have a firmer texture, I've never liked green olives, and I don't want my olive stuffed with anything. But give me a Nyons olive and I'm happy. Oh, and I love tapenade, especially if it has anchovies in it.

caley describes the gorgeous texture of the Nyons olive. SE what other olives do you eat? Is it the texture, saltiness you like? What about the pits? Where do you purchase--from containers at deli or do you select jars from specialty markets?

I'm with LunaPierCook. As a kid, I loved canned black olives, and would power through them like a Hoover. Now, they taste like cardboard to me, because I have discovered kalamatas, nicoises, Cerignolas (in so many colors!), Moroccan-spiced--you name it. I always have a pound container of kalamatas in my fridge, to add to salads, pasta, sauces. I've yet to meet an olive I didn't love. Plop me down by the olive bowl at a party, and I am good to go.

I didn't love olives very much until I went to Spain and ate their 'everyday' anchovy stuffed olives which are like heaven in a tin. My love has extended to all olives after that

those nasty canned black olives... where to begin
the weird tinny taste of the can
the weird musty smell of the brine
the weird spongy yet crispy texture
Any other olive I'll eat.

i always hated olives till my I found some "Italian oil cured" in the deli one day. up to that point my only experience was with those nasty greenand red things everyone in the 70's thought were the epitome of class. so as long as they are real olives send em my way, PLEASE! I wonder of those other ones could be used as Xmas decorations....

I do like olives, a lot. Interestingly enough, I don't like the kalamata ones that Adam tries to get his friend to eat to wean her into liking olives. I like green and black ones though - they're delicious. And Adam's book is definitely worth buying! I'm a huge fan of his (if you couldn't tell.)

Okay, maybe I have just never had a good tasting olive & will seek out a quality source. huney_bumper loved your Christmas decoration idea---shall we string garland?

I love olives, as does my whole family. Last time I was at my brother's there were at least 7 jars of olives. I was jealous.

Can't stand 'em. But strangely, I do like the flavor of them in a dish. So if I make something with olives (got a terrific chicken recipe, if anyone's interested), I finely mince a couple of them, and leave the rest whole, so my son and I can easily pick them out and my husband can gorge to his heart's content.

I Love them. Have you ever tasted a raw sun-dried olive!
No, if you like olives you have to try this.
They are soooo strong, 5 times as strong as a regular olive!
