Natural cook top cleaner?
I have a flat ceramic top stove. It is supposed to be cleaned with a product called "Cook Top Cleaner" which is a nasty gray color and full of chemicals. Anyone have a natural recipe for cleaning these types of stoves? The stove is in an apartment I am renting, so I don't want to scratch it. (I miss my old gas stove, sigh)

I think the usual recommendation for flat-cooktops is generally a baking soda paste. I've only had marginal luck with that for particularly nasty stains, but for daily use it's pretty decent. When you're done, just wipe down with a vinegar/water mix to get rid of the cloudy residue (my cooktop is black - there's always cloudy residue) and give it a nice shine.
I also think there's a few lines of soy-based cleaning products, but I don't have any firsthand experience with those, so I can't vouch for how "natural" they really are.

Well, it's maybe not "natural" but it's cheaper - Barkeeper's Friend. Find it with the cleansers. I think the expensive product you hate also leaves a sort of finish that also protects the cooktop (sort of like a wax). At least the guy who installed mine told me that. He also told me about the Barkeeper's Friend.

I like Simple Green for many tasks. Have you tried that?

Haven't heard of Simple Green. Have seen Barkeeper's Friend, but did not know what it was for. Will give the baking soda paste a try. I just imagine the gross stuff I use now gives off fumes while I am cooking, which is not good. Thanks!

If you use any cleaner like Simple Green, definitely do go over it with vinegar afterwards.
I would be concerned with Barkeepers Friend as it has a bit of abrasive, but if you don't rub too hard and rinse well, you should be ok. Barkeepers Friend is much like Zud, Zud works better, goes after "organics" so if I spill something that burns onto the top, I use Zud, then rinse like a maniac and glosss over all with vinegar.
My cooktop is also black and looks gross and smeary most of the time....yuck.

Barkeepers Friend is excellent for using on stainless pans whose outside get nasty-looking. Great stuff; took me 50 years to find it.
