Looking for Affordable, Amazing Eats In NYC!
My partner and I will be in New York City from DC for the marathon in early November. We love great food and great beer and wine, but we'll be on a bit of a budget (hotels are so expensive there!) We'll be there Friday - Monday and are staying @ West 57th & 10th. Any suggestions on places to eat and drink?

Check out the Cheap eats section of New York Mag. on their website.
What type of food did you have in mind?

Hi Izzy's Mama - We eat anything! We have no food aversions. Ethnic food would be great - Cuban? African? The best pizza slice in the city? We'll try what you recommend.

For ethnic food in NYC, I just love Plataforma. It's a Brazilian Churrascaria located at 316 W 49th Street (Between 8th & 9th Avenues). Lunch is around $30 and dinner is around $50. It may not be cheap, but is good value for the $. Trust me -- you won't eat for days after having a meal here!

Island Burgers isn't far away, and we often grab a pre-theater lunch there. 9th Ave just north of 51st, I believe.

New York Magazine had a really great article about the best cart food in NYC, and where to find the best venders. Check their archives at www.nymag.com Also as recommended by izzys mama, be sure to check out the cheap eats section.
In the East Village at the corner of 9th St and 2nd Ave is Veselka, a Ukranian diner sort of place. Excellent food and not expensive at all. Their website is www.veselka.com

Hop Kee Restaurant - 21 Mott Street. Excellent sit-down restaurant.
Don't discount the Chinese places with the ducks hanging in the window. That's some of the most succulent, tender meat you'll ever have.
Sam's Noodle in the Gramercy Park section. Love that stuff - big huge steaming bowls of noodle soup and other sides. Very reasonable.
Family-Owned Pizzerias - not the chains.
Most Mexican food places are dirt cheap and great - avoid chains.

A few quick thoughts:
Dirt cheap (and delish): Gray's Papaya for a couple of hotdogs and papaya drink, 72nd and Broadway.
Soup dumplings at Joe's Shanghai in Chinatown. Also, Bo Ky in Chinatown.
My neighborhood favorite: Big Nick's, corner of 77th and Broadway. They have a huge menu and virtually anything you want, but stick with the burgers or breakfast.
More later if I think of anything...

The real question is..How cheap is cheap? Some of these ultra cheap places might be fun if you live in the city but if you are here on a rare visit you might want to eat something better than Gray's Papaya..I mean I would imagine that you can get a decent hot dog in D.C. Same goes for Island Burgers.. NOT a destination restaurant. Check out Slice for info on great pizzerias..Una Pizza Napoletana, Di Fara's, Lombardis.. I would also consider Momofuku Noodle Bar in the East Village.. In the neighborhood of your hotel, Ariana Afghan on 9th Avenue if you haven't tried Afghan it would be a good introduction. Breakfast..Clinton Street Baking Company.. I could go on and on..but first again..how cheap is cheap?

izzy's mama - i agree with you. don't come to ny and eat a hot dog. what a waste!

You should define cheap. I thought I knew what cheap food was then I moved here and found out that NY Mag considers it to be $25 or less per person. Not exactly cheap but then you eat here for awhile and realize it is.
For the area you are in, I like 9th Ave, between say 45 and 60th. There are some decent reasonably priced restaurants in this area of Hell's Kitchen.
If you have more time though, go to go Astoria for Greek, Woodside for Thai, Flushing for Chinese... the food is best in Queens, and cheaper.

$25 or less per person is cheap for us for breakfast, certainly for lunch. We'd like to stay around $100 - $150 for dinner for two. We're interested in good wine lists where there are interesting bottles are at reasonable prices, and good beer as well.

OK..now we have something to work with. If you can do $25 per person for breakfast I wouldn't call that cheap.. You must go to Norma's, on 57th Street in the Parker Meridien Hotel..one of the best breakfasts/brunch spots in nyc. Have you checked out Cheap Eats yet? See what appeals and post back to see what people think of your choices..I still stick with Momofuku as a unique choice, they do serve Sake and Beer, not sure about wine.
