Honeymoon for Hungry

The future missus and I are planning our honeymoon for next year. We're interested in the normal combination of sun and sand, but we also want to eat well, too. We're not looking to sell the car for the experience, but we do want to eat well and often. Certain Mexican islands are looking appealing. Any other ideas?

Nick,

I have to be honest with you -- I've visited the Caribbean quite a bit in the last few years and certain Mexican hotspots like Cancun and Cozumel have been decimated in recent years by hurricanes. Entire buildings disappeared from one year to the next...

Even this summer has been a mess down there, taking out areas further south -- Belize and Honduras (two places I would have recommended).

The Bahamas has had it relatively easy and sports some pretty good eating. I like Freeport (the Our Lucaya Resort is very nice) better than Nassau in general, but the Atlantis Resort in Nassau is spectacular. The other nice thing is that you can take a shuttle cruise from Fort Lauderdale for less than $200 round trip.

Best of luck with the wedding and honeymoon! Oh - if you end up on a cruise ship, Celebrity and Princess have markedly better food than their parent companies of Royal Caribbean and Carnival, respectively.

We honeymooned in the Riviera Maya region of Mexico this past March. The weather and scenery were FABULOUS- sunshine, sparkling water and super-friendly service. We opted for an all-inclusive package because neither of us had traveled to Mexico before and didn't know what to expect. The food at our hotel was mediocre. We didn't stay at a high dollar place so I can't really say if ours was an isolated experience or if that is the norm for all-inclusives.

We ventured out for dinner one night and had a great meal at a local place, plus we went on two excursions that included lunch provided by locals. Of the 4 memorable meals we had on the trip, 3 of them were offsite which doesn't say a whole lot for the hotel food! We'll definitely return to Mexico but I don't know if we'll go all inclusive. The convenience of eating on site and not having to carry cash, travelers checks or run up your credit card balance is nice, but I'm not sure it is worth it when the food is subpar. Maybe I'm too picky... :)

Congratulations and have a great life together!
