Cooler weather....warmer beverages

I like to welcome cooler weather with warmer beverages. A couple of my old standbys are hot caramel apple cider & a steaming mug of cocoa. I have friends who simmer wine beverages in crock-pots. When it starts to get nippy outside, what beverages do you drink? What Fall beverages do select in coffee shops or restaurants?

At my farmers market there is a family that sells amazing apple cider. The only down side is that I have to buy a gallon of it at a time, since I live by myself sometimes a gallon is a little much.

Also, I have fallen in love with pumpkin spice soy lattes at starbucks. They are the official reason why I am drinking coffee...again.

I am a huge fan of both hot cider and hot chocolate! I tried a warm kahlua drink one time at a restaurant but it was nasty, so I'm sticking to the non-alcoholic warm drinks!

Apple cider, to me, is one of those things that you idealize and associate with fall-- but I've never had apple cider that I actually want to drink again. : (

Hot chocolate, on the other hand, I'll drink any day of the year, especially in the fall.

Feel free to chime in with those hot chocolate recipes! I'm up for other warm drinking recipes, too. I'm fortunate to have one local chocolate shop which serves a good hot cocoa. Would love to live in a city with more of those options!

give me an octoberfest or pumpkin beer any day. hoorah!

JEP- here's an easy hot chocolate recipe to make from scratch.

unsweetened cocoa powder
sugar
vanilla extract
milk

The ratio for cocoa to sugar is about 1 : 1.5ish, and you want a little less than 2 tbsp of cocoa for one cup of hot chocolate.

Otherwise, blend together your cocoa and sugar in the bottom of a pan, and add just enough milk to make it into a thick paste. Turn on the heat to medium, and keep adding milk in small batches, stirring constantly, until the cocoa tastes as strong as you want it. Once it's hot, add vanilla extract or cinnamon to taste and serve.

Some key things to keep in mind are making sure the initial 'paste' you start with is fully blended, and so is every batch of milk you add in afterwards- keeps you from getting weird little cocoa lumps. Also make sure to stir constantly.

Happy drinking. :)

I love hot chai tea in the fall, all the spices just feel right to me.

Mmmm... Fall beer and ciders! Yum!

Closer to winter I make hot chocolate and add a splash of peppermint schnapps - warms you up really fast!

Another vote here for hot spiced cider. I make it in my slow cooker and the smell alone warms me up ! I have made versions of a mulled cranberry drink that is amenable to adding alcohol for those who wish it.

Hot spiced chai! I had a tasty one last night from my fave local coffee joint. no starbux in my neck o' the woods! The husband refused to try it after he smelled it, and also refused to kiss me after I took a big slurp and waggled my tongue at him. Not sure if the smell of the chai or my probably less than inviting tongue waggling turned him off more!

I had forgotten about chai & the simmering spiced cider would be perfect for after a hayride!

Hot cocoa, pumpkin ale, and white russians.

We make wassail (a variation on mulled wine) for our tree trimming party every year, and every year it is wiped out. Also love the hot mulled cider (sometimes spiked with rum, but mostly not), hot cocoa (of course), and Starbucks pumpkin latte.

Fall is my favorite season. To celebrate the coming of the harvest season a couple of years ago, my wife brought home a gallon of apple cider after work. I heated some up, and before I got a chance to take the first drink, she whipped out a bottle of scotch and poured a big slug into my cup.
She scored some serious points that night.
