Are there fruits and vegetables that you discovered this year? I discovered kabocha squash, fiddlehead ferns, squash blossoms and so many more.

Husk tomatoes AKA strawberry tomatoes AKA cape gooseberries among other names.
Pousse Pied AKA sea beans AKA glass wort

Oh yes!

Not that I've tasted them, but I never knew that the following existed:
durian, batata, sapute, and I want to try them all!

I did however try a lychee nut for the first time, and a mysterious fruit that I still don't the name of (any help would be appreciated!)

It had yellow spiky skin on the outside, and almost looked like a pomegranate on the inside, except that the seeds covered in juice were BRIGHT GREEN and almost had a jello-like texture. Anyone know??

I tasted my first mangosteen. Wow.

At the Union Square greenmarket last week, Alex Paffenroth had fingerling sweet potatoes. They look like knobby pink twigs, and were delicious roasted.

Hillary, was it a horned melon?

Sorry , meant to add a link.

YES! That's what it was, guess that was simpler than I thought.

Thanks for helping me out!

Fennel! I know, I'm probably the last enthusiastic eater on Earth to try it, but I HATE licorice so I was afraid of its flavor...but roasted it is so, so good!

I also have become a fan of jicama, yummy!

Ground cherries, or as one stand at the farmers market calls them, pineapple tomatillos. I love popping them out of the paper husk, and their flavor is so unusual and delicious. The other day I dressed them with olive oil, salt, pepper, and lime basil. I'm so glad I tried them!

Well, I didn't discover (literally) any new fruits or vegetables, but I have come to appreciate ones I didn't before! I guess that's another topic for another day. :)

JEP, I tried those purple potatoes this year, too! Were they the sweet variety?

We saw them at the local Asian market and brought them home. My family simply baked them whole in the oven.

The skin is an inocuous, pale beige but break them open after baking and the dense flesh inside is crayon purple and candy sweet.

I can house a large one all on my own...

Amazing things, I never found out the proper name for them, they're just called "purple potatoes" on the placard at the store...

Fiddleheads, yep. And purple hull peas, fresh shelled and cooked with smoked ham hock. Amazing.

fuuchan---the purple or blue potatoes I tried were small, roundish shaped & I steamed them---they were more waxy--really good tasting with butter!

Dragon fruit was my most memorable. I was on my honeymoon and my husband and I saw it in Chinatown, didn't know what it was, so we decided to buy it and try it!

I just received a bunch of "yard" long green beans from my csa farmer..that will be a first when I finally prepare them
