____ smells better than it tastes
I am asking the opposite, too. _____tastes better than it smells. Okay, these will be strictly personal preferences & no stones thrown for what may seem like another's crazy answer :)
Meat grilling, roasting or frying smells better than it tastes to me.
Cheeses (both stinky & faint oder varieties) taste better than they smell to me.
How do you fill in the blanks?

Play-Do smells better than it tastes, believe me...

I hate the taste of bread but love the smell of it fresh from the oven
choc_puddin at 5:49PM on 09/26/07
Smells better than it tastes: plain rum and tequila, certain fruits (a texture thing -- I don't like the texture, but I love the smell of some fruits, as weird as that sounds!), coffee, and some of my cooking, when I make a flop (ha, ha!). I'm sure I could think of many more for this category.
Tastes better than it smells: broccoli (I lived across the street from a field of broccoli. Whew!) and cheese.

I think coffee smells heavenly but I only like the taste. Also, try as I might, I can never make a latte as good as the ones I can buy. WHY is that?

Tastes better than it smells: brussel sprouts! (unless you are cooking it with bacon, and then it smells great too.)
Smells better than it tastes: Second the coffee - I like it, but that aroma is heaven!

Flavored Coffee's smell absolutely amazing, but you taste them and they are the nastiest things on earth.

tastes better than it smells: pad thai

Cinnamon rolls and similar baked goods smell much better than they taste. As does coffee and, in my personal opinion, bacon.
Cabbage tastes better than it smells. Also pate and most things made with fish, including fish sauce.
Caraway seeds fall into the category of food that both smells and tastes revolting.

onions & garlic cooking smell better than taste to me
chocolate tastes better than smells :)
Does a cooking method sometimes change your taste/smell perception?

I love the smell of coffee before it is brewed, and I love to drink coffee; but it never tastes as good as it smells. I suppose so much can happen between bean & brew - all those factors that make it too weak, scorched, old, etc.

have to agree with Barbigirl flavored coffee smells wonderful, but you couldnt pay me to actually drink that garbage!
huney_bumper at 8:41AM on 09/27/07
I'll add my vote to the flavored coffee smell as well... I love how it smells, but I can't drink it.
I also think pumpkin pie smells better while it's baking then what it tastes like.
Alm25 at 9:35AM on 09/27/07
Coffee! And that terrible flavoured herbal "tea" - it smells nice, but either has no flavour at all or a terrible flavour. Bring on the black, green, white or oolong, please.
Peasantwench at 10:20AM on 09/27/07
I concur that cabbage and fish sauce taste better than they smell; coffee definitely wins in the smells better than it tastes category
psychsarah at 11:07AM on 09/27/07
I am so insulted by pancakes and waffles. They smell utterly divine and then you put them in your mouth and... nothing. I actually hold a grudge against them.
theheadhen at 11:32AM on 09/27/07
As much as I love drinking coffee, I go into a euphoric, drug-like haze when I smell freshly ground coffee.
Also, I don't know if this counts, but I can smell an un-lit cigarette all day long, but the moment it's lit, I'm done.

Popcorn smells so much better than it tastes! And this may be a little off topic, but isn't it funny how the reciprocal verbs of smell and taste are themselves? In other words, popcorn can't smell and popcorn can't taste, but if you read the sentence I just wrote you might think otherwise. Or, are we all wrong? :)

Hillary: Just for you, I'll write a "correct" statement...it is funny to read them as so. The smell of rosemary is much better than the taste and the taste of cooked califlower is better than the smell.
malenky at 1:14PM on 09/27/07
coffee no doubt
zekks at 2:16PM on 09/27/07
Hard boiled eggs stink, but are very tasty.
I agree with caley and theheadhen– pastries, waffles, and pancakes smell wonderful, but their flavors don't come close.
LiveToEat at 3:02PM on 09/27/07
coffee.
I agree with the pad thai comment, too. And the rosemary, too.
flootsmith at 5:15PM on 09/27/07
Hehe, thanks malenky for the correct statement! I would have put a comma though...just kidding! ;)

____ smells better than it tastes
That's easy...The coffee in my office. Honest to God, I don't know how anything can smell so Heavenly and taste like crank case fluid.
