What toppings would make your ultimate pizza?
Do you like your pizza simple with red sauce, fresh basil, oregano and fresh mozza and Parmesan Reggiano or do you like the works? Do you like pineapple on your pizza? I LOVE pineapple on mine but hubby is Italian and he HATES that concept and refuses to partake. Meat lover, vege lover...? I love ALL pizza as long as it's properly cooked and prepared right. :)

White pizza using fresh moz & fresh spinach or just a red sauce with an overload amount of different kinds of cheese.
JEP at 5:26AM on 08/03/07
1. Basic tomato sauce, crisp crumpled bacon, tons of minced garlic and a light topping of cheese.
2. Sauce of ranch dressing, fresh onion seperated into rings, crumpled blue cheese, morsels of chicken breast and a light topping of cheese.

Ummm ... seriously? I'll answer "Yes, all of them in various combinations ... and No Anchovies, Please." :-)

as i'm vegetarian, i'm up for anything with vegetables. And I do like pineapple on my pizza. It somehow goes well with the tomato base and tones down the saltiness
choc_puddin at 7:32AM on 08/03/07
Just about all of them, but hold the pineapple. Lots of garlic with clams; veggie; sausage, tomato, mushrooms, pecorino and mozza. I just had an interesting one -- fig jam, pearl onions, gorgonzola, and prosciutto! Man, that was good.
ride&cook at 7:46AM on 08/03/07
I like pepperoni, italian sausage, and/or meatball, onions, green pepper and sometimes jalapenos, ham or bacon.
I like Barbecue Chicken (with or without onions and jalapenos)
The worst pizza I ever tasted was cold leftover shrimp and black olives. I didn't order it.

I'm a total purist when it comes to pizza. I like your basic white pizza, or a pizza Margherita. I want the taste and mouth feel of the cheese to come through.
Mich23 at 9:18AM on 08/03/07
Although I do make a fair white-clam pizza, I want my regular slice plain and unadorned about 95% of the time. The other 5%? Anchovies and extra garlic please! (Pineapple? Feh! Why not just top your slice with cling peaches [canned] and Cool Whip?)
Barbara Hanson at 9:32AM on 08/03/07
I like my pizzas simple. Either plain or with some shrooms and spinach. Really depends on which pizza place I go to and how fresh the ingredients are.
ceforrester at 9:49AM on 08/03/07
My favorite Pizza topping combo is Kalamata Olives, Chevre Cheese & Prosciutto...and I use my homemade rosemary & garlic red sauce. I could never tire of eating this pizza combination.
2qrs at 9:54AM on 08/03/07
In massachuesetts, they do one with Luingica, which is a smoked portuguese sausage. Excellent. Unfortunately I live in New York City, so I gotta make it, its good but not quite the same.
nelson5757 at 10:27AM on 08/03/07
A delicious Margherita pizza is pure joy!!
KItkat at 11:03AM on 08/03/07
just as an addendum to the margherita -- make mine with buffalo mozzarella... it is so much creamier than even fresh cow's milk mozz!

Pepperoni and green chile, lots of mozzarella. My daughter loves ham and pineapple on her pizza -- and she dips it in ranch dressing! I tell her, enjoy it while you can . . .
hatlady at 11:43AM on 08/03/07
Artichokes, basil/pesto, garlic, capers, roasted red peppers, buffalo mozz... (have never liked onions and green peppers)
emily20008 at 12:01PM on 08/03/07
Wow! I'm impressed with so many adventurous and inventive ideas for pizza...! I'm going to have to try some of your wonderful suggestions...dangit I'm hungry now! :))
cheffy at 12:27PM on 08/03/07
"Toppings" are for NEOPHYTES. Real pizza is comprised of only five things: crust, tomato, cheese, basil, olive oil. The rest is barbarism.
seyo at 12:50PM on 08/03/07
My favorite pizza toppings are tomatoes or tomato sauce, mozzerella and/or provolone cheese, and mushrooms. I also like Pizza Marguerita with fresh mozzerella, tomato slices and basil.
amylou61 at 12:52PM on 08/03/07
I'm up for almost anything, but Hear this...If it's got canned mushrooms on it, take it right back to where it came from!! ICK!!!
letthemeatcake at 12:53PM on 08/03/07
i'm basically a purist...but i love mario's lardo pizza at Otto.
childhood favorite? a ziti pizza slice from a place right by my dance school on long island. i always made my mom take me after class and i thought it was heaven on earth...
rebeccadiamond at 1:15PM on 08/03/07
The place down the street from me does a killer white pizza with pesto and baby clams. About the only thing that would be better is if I could get them to stud it with whole cloves of roasted garlic. Yum!
I once topped a pizza with slices of roasted potato, mussels and chorizo with a creamy lemon saffron sauce. That turned out to be better than it had any right to be, actually.
Amandarama at 4:09PM on 08/03/07
im not vegetarian but i rly like veggie pizza. ill take a good oozey plain cheese pizza too. other than that i probably wont go for pizza.
stumbler02 at 4:25PM on 08/03/07
I've already had it - the chicken wing pizza from San Remo Pizza in North Syracuse, NY. It's a thin slice of heaven, literally.
carpetbagger at 6:24PM on 08/03/07
carpetbagger, that's my hometown! i've never tried san remo, maybe next time I'm visiting the parents. I never loved Varsity Pizza as much as everyone else, have you tried theirs?
Personally, I love pizza with fresh tomatoes on top. That sounds so boring, but there is something about singular tomato flavor in contrast with tomato sauce that I crave whenever I get pizza.
Littlebluesiren at 1:21AM on 08/04/07
I love thin crust pizzas with parma ham, olives, spinach, goat cheese and sun dried tomatoes with a really good tomato sauce.
In England they like to put fried eggs in the middle of pizzas. It is soo soo soo wrong.

I am not much of a cook, but I once made a pizza topped with lobster tails sauteed in olive oil and garlic with grape tomatos, avocado and feta cheese that was downright obscene.
AlisonBF at 12:16PM on 08/04/07
I'm a purist, too. A great slice of extra-thin crust made from a good yeasty dough, the right amount of good quality mozzarella (I adore cheese, but you really can have too much on pizza), and an awesome fresh-cooked sauce is terrific. Or traditional, authentic Margherita, can't beat it.
That said, if I do have an extra topping (usually a concession to the kids), I typically only want one item. Either meatballs (really, really good ones) or fresh mushrooms will do.
I did once have a pesto pizza with artichoke hearts, fresh mushrooms and a scattering of finely chopped fresh tomatoes, and a few pieces of diced grilled chicken -- that was a very good dish, but would never satisfy a real pizza craving.
LoCo at 1:27PM on 08/04/07
Your recipes and ideas are really inspring me! I'm psyched for my next pizza adventure! :D
I know there are food 'purists' that consider anything that is not the 'traditional' is sacrilege but I am on the other end of the spectrum and love new and inventive ideas...I love 'old school' too but I also enjoy throwing caution to the wind and playing with flavors, textures and just having fun with food. I don't take food too seriously because I love it too much to be staid and stodgy.. and no, I'd never put peaches on my pizza...well, unless it was a pie. ;) :)
cheffy at 1:30PM on 08/04/07
I like margarhita or spinach and garlic white.
JerzeeTomato at 5:57PM on 08/04/07
Crushed San Marzanos, bufala mozz, capicola, thin strips of Walla Walla sweets. Sometimes I swap out the onions for sliced kalamatas or peppadews. A fine shred of fresh basil when it's sliced, and I'm in heaven.
I used to adhere strictly to the no fruit/no fish/no fowl [puhlease, enough with the barbecue-Thai-chicken-mandarin orange nonsense pies], but I do love a good clam pie now and then.
sallyforth at 6:54PM on 08/04/07
What? WHAT?! Nobody mentioned 'SPAM' or 'Velveeta'...that would be one gnarly, trailer-trash pizza.. lol!
Great ideas, folks...again, thank you for the inspiration...I'm ready to take the pizza plunge into the unknown...but I refuse to apply/add frog-legs, cow testicles or sea urchin to a pizza...I guess I *do* have some limits. rotf! ;))

peppers, peppers and more peppers.
and if there is room, i am down with tomatoes and extra cheese.
rubyjnkie at 12:23PM on 08/06/07
oh and spinach tomato from this pizza joint in Gainesville, Fl called Leonardo's is amazing.
and anything on a Satchel's pizza in Gainesville is great too.
:)
rubyjnkie at 12:25PM on 08/06/07
If it isn't Neapolitan Pizza Margherita it ain't pizza - just extra virgin olive oil, Roma tomatoes, a little minced garlic, a little salt, Mozzarella & Parmesan and basil. Nothing else, period.
Other toppings, faggetaboutit - they ain't pizza.
Livetotravel at 1:01PM on 08/06/07
Great topic idea!
I love love love Margherita pizza! Fresh basil, mozzarella cheese along with traditional pizza cheese and sauce. Delicious!
In terms of other toppings,
I love: pineapple, mushrooms, and black olives, and pepperoni (all 4 together would be the ultimate!)
I hate: spinach, green pepper, sausage, (on pizza at least)
