Tasty toast toppers....

Mr. Breakfast has a fun website. Tons of recipes, articles & reviews--check it out soon. I took this quote from the 308 ways to enjoy toast article ---"Toast. Is there any comfort food easier to make? You pull it out of the toaster & plop on your favorite topping. Presto! Breakfast" Can SE readers break the 308 ways record---let's try! What's your toast & topping recipe?

Take a piece of firm white bread, toast until medium dark, slather on butter & coat with cinnamon sugar.

JEP: My grandma calls that "super toast" and she is right. It's one of my favorite foods to this day!

Big fan of cherry preserves on a slice of toasted rustic bread. Oh, you cannot go wrong with this one. Homemade strawberry jam is also a weakness of mine when it comes to toast.

Some of my college friends would put cream cheese on a slice of toast, but I felt the fat to carbs ratio wasn't quite right. Has anyone tried something like this, or maybe with a savory twist for breakfast? Maybe if I had some inspiration I could make it work... veggies and cheese?

I do like toast with butter, cinamon and sugar, but I always put it in the microwave for a few seconds right before I eat it to make it all mush together...I suppose you could do with this a toaster over too if you want to avoid the evil micro-rays.

But my favorite is and will always be Nutella and strawberry jam.

marmite....

don't turn your nose up to yeast....

I shouldn't admit this ...

I LOVE tahini and sriracha on toasty bread. I have no idea why I tried the combination, but it is seriously satisfying.

Peanut butter and marshmallow fluff!

Smoked mackerel and mustard. Hard cheese (jarlesberg, for example) and sliced cucumbers with a little bit of butter. Soft cheese with sliced red pepper. I like a savoury breakfast. My boyfriend likes liver pate with something pickled (beetroot or gherkins) on top. Usually we have these things on Wasa or Danish rye bread, but toast works nicely too.

Thanks for sharing---we are on our way to beat the 308 ways to enjoy toast! I have never tried marmite or sriracha. I agree, the cinnamon sugar topping is even better when it is melty.

Cream cheese and pepper jelly!

toasted semolina with roasted garlic and a tiny bit of olive oil. Sorry but I'm just not into sweet stuff in the morning, when I want sweet, I want chocolate!

My favorite toast topping is cashew butter. Cream cheese on toast works if the bread is hearty, and it's topped with a tomato or cucumber, salt, and pepper...though cream cheese and berry jam is nice, as well.

try putting the butter, cinnamon and sugar on the bread before you toast it (in a toaster oven, not a toaster) .. nice crunch

Mom's favorite is cottage cheese on rye toast.

The other day, I toasted up some lovely kalamata olive bread with homemade Montasio cheese pesto and a slice of provolone on top.

Gotta love the toaster oven. One of my favorite kitchen gadgets.

I love Honey or Agave nectar on mine.. with or without butter.

cream cheese and tomato slices.

scrambled eggs.

hummus & alfalfa sprouts.

Last night with our dinner we had toasted multigrain ciabatta with roasted garlic onion jam and a little parmigiano. Mmmph.

cream cheese and bacon on a toasted bagel

Pepper salad with roasted chiles, tomatoes and a simple dressing of vinegar and oil is wonderful on toast.

Cream cheese and sliced Spanish olives, or a robust garlic-veggie schmear, are favorite toast toppers. Back in the Pleistocene days of Weight Watchers, breakfast was a slice of toast topped with riccotta cheese and sugar-free strawberry preserves, a combination I still occasionally crave.

I love toast with a slice of tomato, mozzerella, and basil leave put under the broiler until melted drizzeled with olive oil, or slice tomato, slice hard boiled egg drizzled with olive oil and salt and pepper.

I like my toast well done to slightly burnt...especially if dipping in egg yolks.

Favorite Breakfast Toast: Thin layer of Cheese Whiz

Favorite Lunch Toast: Braunschweiger & mustard

Favorite Dinner Toast: Growing up, my dad would grate fresh garlic on Toast to go with steak or chops. The garlic melts into the toast like butter. I still make this simple accompaniment for dinner when we grill, make pasta or a just a simple bowl of soup.

A piece of warm ham out of the oven and LOADS of butter...I used to do it a lot as a kid, but I haven't in years. It's what I ate when my mom made scalloped potatoes and ham, just a toasty buttery ham sandwich because I hated scalloped potatoes...

So bad and so good!

Nutella! yum.

Hot rye toast piled with steak tartare...mmmmm yumm.

Hot seven-grain toast with a slick of mayo, half-melted extra-sharp cheddar, and sliced tomato...yumm again.

But I must tell you, the best breakfast ever (based on party leftovers): hot whole-wheat toast slathered with homemade foie-gras pate, and a big cup of extremely good coffee. I still dream about this.

sauteed mushrooms and stinky cheese

Butter and raspberry jam. Chocolate and sea salt under a broiler (has to be sturdy good bread). Mayonnaise- just mayo. Scrambled eggs. Um....sliced tomatoes, salt, pepper, basil, and olive oil (under the broiler again). Peanut butter.

You guys are making me really hungry.

multi-grain with extra-sharp cheddar and cinnamon-sugar

Raisin pump with scallion cream cheese.

Really good butter and a fried egg. Although, all this talk of pate is making me crave liver....

So far 47 ways to enjoy toast---can we think of more? Some really creative & delicious combinations---thanks!

Honey butter on cinnamon raisin walnut toast

Bagel of your choice lightly toasted with cream cheese mixed with fresh dill, finely chopped red onion and chopped fresh grape tomatoes, salt & pepper to taste. Make the cream cheese mix in advance so flavors can blend. Savory and delicious.

Apple butter and a dash of nutmeg. Awesome.

A new discovery made just today; and the 50th variety of toast toppings; butter, cloves, lemon zest, creme fraiche, and sauteed peaches.
For the less complicated, peanut butter with chocolate icing
Marshmallows and chocolate chips
Toasted hazelnuts and honey
Zucchini, roasted red pepper, and goat cheese

Discovery made today: hot white toast with super-chunky peanut butter and dulche de leche. This was pretty wonderful.

Twenty-five years ago, I spent the summer in a town where the local veggie restaurant made an insanely good sandwich of a lightly toasted bagel spread with cream cheese, topped with sliced avocado, drizzled with fresh lemon juice, and sprinkled with freshly cracked black pepper. It was one of the best things I've ever eaten, but I was reluctant to post it here since I think the bagel -- rather than toast -- is probably a requirement.

It is amazing & fun to read the number of different toast toppers!

I also like peanut butter honey mix spread on whole wheat toast with a sprinkle of granola.

We are at 57 ways to top toast---do you have other creations?

58) I'm a fanatic for sweetened condensed milk and have been known to slather it on a piece of toast from time to time...

Good seven grain with tuna mixed with capers, a little bit of curry, some small cubes of granny smith apple, small dice of onion with dijon mustard on the toast then squeeze a little bit of lemon and salt and pepper on the top of that.

toasted rye bread with sliced hard boiled egg, salt and pepper, and prepared yellow mustard (plochman's) sometimes. best accompaniment with a beer. add a pickle and it's great with two beers.

my hubby loves toast wtih marmelade (didn't see that one up there yet...)
my fave is really PB and honey (mentioned by JEP)
Maple butter is another great option, but only if you like supersweet stuff (I don't do this one for breakfast...)

I'm adding #63----marscapone cheese spread on toasted date bread with a drizzle of tupelo honey

Thanks for all of the suggestions---can we add more ways to enjoy toast?

Ripe avocado slices, a drizzle of the best virgin olive oil and smoked paprika

Peanut butter and good, preferably homemade, mayonaisse ( don't knock it till you try it ), great as a sandwich

Soft goat cheese topped with a sunnyside up egg with cracked black pepper

Brie and apricot preserves

Garlic paste made from it being baked whole with salt, pepper and olive oil, till it's soft and candy sweet, adorned with shreds of basil or tarragon

And the best cinnamon toast is made with pumpernickle bread

Toasted sourdough bread topped with S&P-ed tomato slices and provolone cheese placed under the broiler until the cheese bubbles.

okay, this might sound a bit odd, but there is sometimes nothing better than a nice piece of thick toast, spread with vegemite (or marmite, depending on what is available) and then a little worchestershire sauce and finally some really nice, warm baked beans (English-style ones, not American ones - I can't stand the molasses that they always add to them in the US).

toasted white bread with a good slopping of mayo and thick sliced beefsteak tomatoes

toasted dark wheat bread with a heaping of smashed white beans + roasted garlic + goat cheese (or feta)

toasted whole grain bread with a slathering of cream cheese topped with a dollop of strawberry preserves

toasted sourdough with chavrie, toasted slivered almonds, and apricot jam

toasted brioche with fig jam and crushed hazelnuts

toasted pumpernickel with boursin

One of my roommates in college used to take a piece of white toast, slather it with mayo, split a hot dog on top of that, and then drown it in canned baked beans. He then proceeded to nuke it for a couple of minutes and squirt it with bright yellow mustard. It used to make me gag to watch him eat it, but hey, it's another thing to do with toast :-)

I love wheat toast (or toasted english muffins) with:
-eggs cooked over easy and then the bread soaks up all the yolk
-JIF and Smuckers
-PB & honey
-cream cheese and jam
-cinnamon swirl bread with PB

pretty much any sandwich is better on toast.

Thanks for all of the latest additions to: ways to enjoy toast!

I'm adding #84---Toasted sunflower kernal bread, slathered in butter & crowned with black raspberry jelly.

We can do this---our goal is 309 ways!

Years ago, an old fisherman told us his secret for being able to walk to the lake, row a boat out, fish all morning and then still have enough energy to make it back home. He'd start out at "umpty-AM" with toast, and on top was a warmed up mixture of a can of undiluted Campbells Cr. of Mushroom soup and a can of drained tuna with a lot of black pepper on it. Sounded awful to me, so I shelved the idea.
We finally tried it when we had to get up at 3AM to get to the flea market in Tucson from our home about 60 miles away. We'd eat this heavy duty toast and we were able to load the truck, drive to Tucson, work the flea market until we were out of stuff to sell (usually between noon and 2PM) and actually make it to our fave Mexican restaurant for a really good meal.

don't forget SOS; made with good beef and home-made sauce it is a real treat. also, my mom would take leftover t-gvng. turkey, dice it and mix with cream of mushroom soup, over toast it always brought back the great feeling of a family feast. plus, only she and i liked it so it was extra special.

#68----Whole wheat toast spread with lemon curd

Any toast toppers we have missed?

Toast topped with cottage cheese and coursely ground black pepper. That's it. Simple and good.

Nice dark bread - toasted twice for extra crispyness - spread lightly with tahini and very thin slices of asiago. YUM!

My go-to toast has always been thick, grainy bread slathered with real butter & natural chunky, oily peanut butter......all melted together.

Oop's---my last post should have been for #88

#92---multi-grain toast spread with cream cheese & apricot preserves

Hey, we are almost to the 100 mark! Add your favorite toast topper!

not sure if this qualifies as a sandwich but i like to grind fresh shrimp and crab meat together, saute it with real butter, bell peppers, onions and celery, i then add good old velveeta cheese to it and simmer it until it thickens. then i take fresh pistolettes, stuff them with the mixture and then deep fry them in peanut oil. velveeta is easy to find in the new orleans area, it's in the gourmet cheese section.

My favorite toast topper is a very light smear of butter and topped with a generous helping of apple sauce. I also like this combo on waffles which I have for dinner on occasion!

toast rubbed with a raw garlic clove, drizzled with olive oil, then rubbed with half a raw tomato. the spanish love it and so do i
also (here is the middle america in me) commercial white bread medium dark, and plain butter.. dunk it in a cup over-sweetened lipton tea-no lemon.

#95---white toast spread with peanut butter then sprinkled with chopped dates

What goes on top of your toast?

i think we are forgetting the whole wonderful world of peanut butter. my favorites in order are 1) pb with a really sharp cheddar-melted
2)pb with sliced garlic, salt and a little olive oil 3) pb with basil sambal

I love a slice of hearty white bread toasted and topped with baby swiss cheese --melted slightly with homeade cherry preserves. Yummmmm.

I get to add #100---yea!

Whole wheat toast spread with butter & topped off with rhubarb strawberry preserves

Toast topper suggestions? Let's keep adding!

Some savories;
101:crisp ciabatta rubbed with garlic and squeeze a very ripe tomato over it
102:Madras red curry paste and plain yogurt
103:melted blue cheese and rosemary
and some sweets:
104:butter, dulce de leche, and gorgonzola
105:cream cheese, peanut butter, and graham wafer crumbs
106:butter, brown sugar, and ginger

Toasted ciabatta spread with black olive tapenade, a thick layer of super-fresh ricotta, a drizzle of olive oil, and a bit of good salt and fresh ground black pepper!

Also, the DC-area bakery Marvelous Market sells a delicious, slightly sweet bread called Farmhouse Wheat (which I think is a variation on Anadama bread) that is awesome when sliced thick, topped with any sharp cheese (I like Parrano), and toasted until the cheese is bubbling and is beginning to brown.

#109---toasted sunflower kernal bread thickly topped with boysenberry jam

#110---toasted nine grain bread topped with pumpkin-pecan butter

Keep those toast topper ideas coming!

In tomato season I have open-faced tomato sandwiches every day. My current fave: multigrain toast spread with goat cheese, a little black olive tapenade and thick-sliced brandywines sprinkled with sea salt. So good!

#112---rye toast spread with cream cheese & topped with green hot pepper jelly

Sweet or savory, add your toast toppers!
