Perfect PB&J? What's your preference?
What is your preference for the all American classic -PB&J?
My favorite sandwich is a BLT. But when I crave a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, I want smooth peanut butter (must be Jif) and strawberry jelly (Smuckers). I prefer it to be cold, sitting the frig at work until lunchtime.

Michigander, you're a poster after my own heart. -Besides cereal I used to LIVE on PB and J sammies. :)))
Oh, g'ness gracious I love PB &J but I prefer Jam not Jelly (Strawberry being my favorite).
Okay, try this...you won't regret it (well, your taste buds won't but your heart might get a bit miffed so I'd limit eating this to only once a month so you don't have a full on coronary).
PB & J RECIPE ala Angelina/Cheffy
Two pieces of white (preferably sour dough but any gushy white bread will do).
Some Rasberry Jam
Some Skippy peanut butter (I can't stand Jif, weird?...Skippy is prolly PURE junk food peanut butter but I don't eat it often enough to feel guilty).
Sweet cream butter -unsalted-
Directions:
Toast bread
Shmear some PB on one side
On your other toast shmear some butter and THEN the JAM or
jelly of choice
Smack your two slices together [naughty faces forward] and enjoy. :)
Side note:
I dunno what it is about mixing butter and peanut butter together in the same recipe but it's like heaven...

I've also heard of peanut butter and cheese sandwiches...some people swear by them...weird? I haven't braved that idea yet.
I think I'd freak out if someone DARED to put bacon on my PB&J...I mean...that's just pushing my culinary limits. lol
Love & Light & Good eating,
Cheffy =0)

Pepperidge Farm cinnamon bread, smooth peeanut butter, fluff and raspberry preserves (no seeds)
OH MY GOD!!!

I eat smooth peanut butter, brand really doesn't matter and any flavor jam. Also like Cheffy, I LOVE putting butter on my PB&J. Just something about the smooosh when I bite into it. I can eat cold sammys, but prefer the bread and PB to be room temp and the jam ice cold. Sourdough or any multi-grain bread will do, toasted or not. Hey, what can I say? I'm easy.

I'd take almond butter instead of peanut, apricot jam and seven grain bread. But ultimately I'd prefer the almond butter without the jam, or the jam without the almond butter. I find the combination of nut butter and jam to be a bit weird, in all honesty.

MY PB&J preferences change from time to time. Currently, I make them with: Thickly spread Skippy Natural & lots of black raspberry jelly on sunflower kernal bread---served at room temperature.
JEP at 5:19AM on 08/17/07
I always smooth the pb on both peices of bread, and spread the jam on one...that way the jam is in the middle and doesn't make one of the peices of bread go soggy. Great idea eh?
When is comes to pb&j's, I don't want anything fancy - just what my mom made me as a kid, generic white bread, crunchy ph and strawberry jam. Simple as that.

Cashew butter and St. Dalfour's ginger and orange marmalade on anything works for me. Heck, I'll take straight cashew butter right out of the jar. ;D

am i the only natural peanut butter fan here? i find the commercial brands way to sweet.
natural pb (usually creamy) with rasberry jam (homemade!) on some sort of whole wheat or nutty bread.
but if i'm really craving it then i hit up the peanut butter & co in nyc and get the elvis! yum!
ceforrester at 9:11AM on 08/17/07
i only had it once on someones suggestion but pb and green olives, actually tasted good.
jaf at 9:18AM on 08/17/07
I've never, ever had one. Weird, I know.
BaHa at 11:15AM on 08/17/07
pb, banana and honey
pb and nutella
and the lovely original! i like strawberry jelly, too.
rebeccadiamond at 11:29AM on 08/17/07
ceforrester - i definitely prefer a natual peanut butter as well.
blueberry is my choice of jam... if not that, then my fall back of strawberry.
Alm25 at 11:45AM on 08/17/07
White bread, creamy Skippy, Welch's grape jelly, and what makes it extra special (and crunchy): potato chips (yes, in the sandwich).
ceforrester: I like natural pb on my toast in the morning, but for PBJ, it's gotta be the sweetened, hydrogenated stuff.
Cheffy: Don't know about PBJ and bacon, but PB and bacon is pure heaven. My brother called it a fat sandwich (because that's basically all that is in it, not necessarily because it'll make make you fat). And I lived on pb and cheddar sandwiches when I was in college.

It's funny - I don't think I'll EVER be too old for PB&J! I had two of the sandwiches yesterday! :)
My perfect peanut butter and jelly is raspberry jelly with creamy peanut butter (usually Skippy). Grape jelly works too, but I absolutely cannot stand a strawberry jelly PB&J!
Great topic :)

I love Adam's Natural Peanut Butter, or the kind you grind yourself. On whole grain bread, toasted, with raspberry preserves. I don't think I would have LIVED through college without peanut butter.

Wonder, chunky Jif and Whelch's Grape Jelly.
ccbweb at 3:13AM on 08/18/07
White Wonder bread, smooth Jif, plenty of marshmallow Fluff. Add a bit of sand underfoot, and perhaps an accidental grain or two in the sandwich, and I'm taken back to my summers at my uncle's cottage on the beach.
orangemiles at 8:20AM on 08/18/07
Practically any combo, but I've crammed a couple of whole wheat, smooth PB and mango chutney in my bag for those 20-hour trips going overseas and even smushed, they were great. So when I eat one, I'm on a train in the rain in the west of England - so to speak.

Dee, I've never had PB and bacon together but I'll have to give it a shot. I think there are some Hors D'Oeuvre recipes which include said ingredients. If you've ever watched "Auntie Mame" [the older one], not the one with Lucille Ball in it...I had to laugh at the Snobby folks whom put tuna and peanut butter together...I mean...YUCK! But, I could brave bacon and PB...I really want to try some sliced apples, sharp cheddar and PB on a cracker or sandwich bread.
cheffy at 10:27AM on 08/18/07
Laura Scudder's Old Fashioned Unsalted PB + sliced bananas + good strawberry jam on some thick sliced white bread from the local bakery. oh man, i could eat this for the rest of my life... by the way, i'm a picky peanut butter nut =D give me a spoon and a jar of this amazing PB and I'm in heaven!!!

My perfect PB&J? Peanut butter and Texas Pepper Jelly Mandarin Orange Habanero on white bread. It's fantastic.
PhotoKirk at 12:21AM on 08/19/07
A shout out to the great Mitten-shaped state of my childhood! Yeah for Michigan!!! Anyways....
Okay, my preference is not a true PB&J but a PB&B. As in a peanut butter and banana sandwich. Honestly, the bread is optional. Most of the times we just cut the banana down the middle into two long halves and slather the middle with the best quality natural peanut butter we cut find. I prefer extra crunchy, even though it is more work. The crunchiness of the peanuts against the slipperiness of the bananas is pure heaven. Yum!!
stareater at 11:52AM on 08/19/07
Ceforrester, I'm with you-- non-natural peanut butters always leave a gross chemical taste in my mouth and are too sweet.
I love Laura Scudder's All-Natural peanut butter (crunchy only) on whole-wheat or white with organic strawberry jam. Or sour cherry jam- that's pretty heavenly in my book. I like to toast the bread lightly first.
Christina at 12:09PM on 08/19/07
I have several versions that I like: One is wheat bread spread with crunchy natural pb (whole foods 365 brand is amazing) with sliced banana on top. Then you toast it and add strawberry jam or honey.
Peanut butter with hot chocolate mix is fantastic, and so is pb spread on a jalepeno bagel. I ate that all the time in college.
VegeGoddess at 6:31PM on 08/19/07
Any peanut butter (I'm not at all picky), my mom's plum jelly, and raisin bread fried up like a grilled cheese. So ooey, gooey & fruity!
kendraburt at 8:54PM on 08/19/07
snyders pretzel snaps with skippy natural (smooth) and homemade blueberry preserves, open-faced. then you get to eat like 25 mini sandwiches!
altosaxchica at 10:41PM on 08/19/07
cheffy, I've got to admit blushingly that I am a fan of pb and cheese. for some reason, I dont care for anything sweet with my peanut butter, but cheese is actually good, though horrible enough that I limit it to Very special occasions. I also love peanut butter and salt, good all natural peanut butter, with a sprinkling of pink salt, absolute comfort food!
huney_bumper at 9:00AM on 08/20/07
I like Trader Joe's nutty peanut butter with my mom's pomegranate jelly or raspberry preserves on wheat bread or a bagel. Toasted bread first, then put on the spreads. Yum!
misseditor at 3:13PM on 08/20/07
Ahhh... I have found my people, fellow PB&J lovers. I start out with a dense white country loaf type bread or multi-grain with lots of seeds, then natual peanut butter and then apple jelly or grape jelly. As a kid I also had them with my grandma's plum or pear jelly... sweet sweet memories.
