News flash: _____ will be discontinued in 2 weeks!
Suppose a favorite product or food will no longer exist soon. Do you hoard the remaining supply? Accept the fact & seek out a suitable sub? For me, knowing chocolate would cease is a devastating thought. Have any of your favorite products vanished?

If the Dulce de Leche ice cream at Cones on Bleecker street ceased to exist, I think I would buy 10 containers of it at once and stack them up inside the second freezer I would buy just for them...:)
It is the most delicious Dulce de Leche (caramel) variation I have tasted in a looooooong time.

Foie Gras in Chicago? Then I would make Faux Gras with chicken liver.

Coffee...I have NO idea what I would do. I'd hoard as much as I possibly could and when I ran out of that, I'd probably turn to narcotics. Oh I wish I was kidding...

Yes it has, and I am mad about it!!!
I found out that raspberry flavored chocolate chips were seasonal (back in 99 or 2000 is when I noticed they did not re-appear) and called the company to find out when they would be out again, because I made some phenominal baked goods and fudge with them (thats what my customers said).
Only to find out they were discontinued!!!! I can't believe the other 'bad' choices of flavored chocolate chips are still on the shelves but not these!!!
I have ran into many other cooks, chefs, bakers...etc that have complained about the same thing! Sure you can still get the flavor with extract or come close...but its not the same.
After my phone call to the company (Hershey's) they politely apologized and sent me a packet of coupons and recipes for their other items...I am still pouting mad!
If you go to this site, you will see them on the timeline in 1993, but they are not currently in the product line...lets see the discontinued line! http://www.hersheys.com/products/details/bakingpieces.asp

Trader Joes had these awesome japanese scallops in the frozen fish section. they were so good, you could eat them raw. I loved and cherished these scallops! They stopped carryinng them about a month ago...not officially discontinued but I am skeptical. If they come back, you bet your arse I will be STOCKING up!

I don't run into this problem as much as I do my favorite restaurants closing. My favorite pizza joint and favorite Indian restaurants both closed within the last 8 months. I found a replacement pizza place (that actually has even better thin crust pizza), but have to travel nearly 30 minutes now for good Indian chow.

BusinessWeek has an interesting article on fad marketing, where companies introduce a new product and then intentionally discontinue it a short-time later, like Pepsi's "Ice Cucumber" soda in Japan.
This is sort-of food related, but when Dial discontinued their "Almond" soap I was crushed!!! I would have bought a crate of that stuff!

When I was young, I used to eat Screaming Yellow Zonkers like they were going out of style.
Then they sort of went away. Years and years later, and coincidentally only a few months ago, I did an ebay search for Screaming Yellow Zonkers. Sure enough, they were still in production, sold only in limited markets, like milwaukee. I got 5 boxes from ebay, and savored them. Just like I remembered. about a week after I finished that last box, I got an email from the guy I got them from and he said that Screaming Yellow Zonkers were being discontinued and he only had a few cases left that he would continue to unload on ebay, when they were gone, they were gone....
I didn't get anymore. The auctions all went for too much $$$, and I was content having gotten them again just before their demise. Just in time.
Oh and don't even get me started on Quisp...

Not permanently discontinued, but when the Cadbury Mini-Eggs come out every Easter, I buy at least three times more than I think I can respectably eat...and they're gone before I even finish the real hard-boiled easter eggs.

Honey Nut Cheerios! I also horde the Girl Scout Thin Mints and Trifolds - they freeze beautifully and I like them frozen.
