Meal Planning - Does anyone still do it?
How do you decide what you're cooking for the week - do you plan menus for the week or just go with the flow?

I have Fresh Direct deliver on Monday, usually with some kind of fish, chicken cutlets or thighs, and maybe one other protein. If I have something in mind to do with the fish (usually salmon) and/or chicken I'll also order the appropriate ingredients.
So Monday is fish, Tuesday or Wednesday is usually chicken. Saturday we shop at Fairway (Upper West Side of Manhattan) or Whole Foods for the night's dinner. The other days of the week are up for grabs.
We are fortunate to live within blocks of three or four wonderful foodie (there's that word!) stores, so satisfying spur-of-the-moment cravings is never a problem.

I have one of those magnetic, dry-erase write boards I keep on my fridge (it also has a cork board bottom for tacking on coupons and notes etc.) I usually do try to plan meals because I need to remind myself to thaw out meat, use up veges (I always feel utterly guilty if I let veges go bad in the vege bin). I must admit I only usually plan 3-4 meals and then play it by ear the other days...especially in the Summer when I can get my hubby to barbecue. :D

I only plan a few days ahead of time, and that's usually on-the-spot in the store. For example, when my 12-year-old daughter is here on alternate weekends, we make a 6 a.m. trip to Kroger on Saturday, as we did this morning. It was in the store that we decided tonight's dinner is Pulled Pork BBQ sandwiches with fresh-cut fruit salad and a chilled pasta salad. Tomorrow's dinner is spaghetti and garlic bread, while lunch will be over-bun-length grilled Nathan's hot dogs. There are also chicken breasts for Monday evening, and pork loin chops for Tuesday. Wednesday? We'll see how that goes.

I'm a diehard planner. I plan three meals for the week (which usually gives us enough food for 5 nights.) and do all of my shopping at once, unless I need something that spoils rather quickly. I find it much easier to cook when I know what my options are, and therefore, I don't have any last minute panics. :)

I have a fully stocked pantry and freezer. If there was no way to get to a store we would survive 3 or 4 months. I keep 2 extra propane tanks for the grill and bags of charcoal for the smoker. There is always a plan for meals. Some days I just grab something out of the freezer. Other days I go according to what is fresh at the market produce.
Some days I just feel like something simple.

JerzeeTomato, you are a food 'stocker-upper' after my own heart! I have a side-by-side fridge indoors as well as in my garage. I have a fully stocked pantry too! Costco is my wet-dream when I can get my hubby to drive me there [he HATES how much money I end up spending there ha-ha]! I think if we ever have a major disaster where either of us lives we'll be good to go...we'll just have to fight off our desperate, UNstocked up neighbors. ;)))
I've been spoiled lately with Albertson's and Safeway delivering my groceries but I try to just stick with canned good, bread etc. when ordering online groceries because trusting someone to pick my pork chops or head of cabbage is a little 'iffy'.
As to the topic... I think planning ahead a bit is a security/comfort thing for me...I like knowing precisely what I'm going to make for meals rather than last-minute quick thinking. I guess that makes me a bit of a slow, sluggish turtle but oh well... :))

For years I went without planning, just playing it by ear, or getting a list together at the last minute from some recipe that piqued my interest. Now that I'm a single dad, though, I find my time is a bit more precious and I am attempting to come over to the dark side. It just seems like a free night or two per week with three or four regular meals planned and bought for is the way to go. I just have to get in the habit now. Yeah ... riiiiight.

I try to plan 2-3 dinners a week, usually involving a new recipe I want to try. I'm attempting to work my way through all of my cookbooks! My pantry is well stocked and I always have fresh vegetables on hand, for the nights when I make something up at the last minute. If I don't have at least a minimal plan I wander around the store like a moron.

How do you get a 12-year-old up at 6 a.m., is what I want to know!
lemons at 4:51PM on 08/18/07
I'm a OCD planner! It works well because I live alone. Therefore, I can plan & eat "whatever" with no one but myself to please. Ha-ha!

You can see pics of her with me in various locations on my food blog, including a great pic of her picking out corn at the market a nearby commercial farm, and another batch of her in a dunk tank at the county fair a couple weeks ago. The whole 6 a.m. thing evolved from the fact that I do only get her (and her brothers) on alternate weekends. I had decided some time ago that that's the best time to do shopping for those weekends, particularly since the Starbucks in Kroger opens right at 6 a.m. She invited herself along one morning, and it instantly became "our thing, something she has to do with dad or her weekend no longer feels right. The staff at that Kroger now know this schedule, and if we don't show up, some of them worry! She starts with a large hot cocoa from Starbucks to wake up (adult temperature, please!), and when it's gone by the second aisle, she's already bouncing off the store's walls! Oh ... today was Kid's Day here in our town. Once we got there, we realized the dunk tank was the same one from the County Fair! She ended up taking the 1:30 to 2 p.m. shift in the tank again this afternoon, and just had a blast! It's 7:40 p.m., she's been up since 5:30 this morning, and I think she's finally winding down.

I am a planner - really have to be when you are on a tight budget and have kids. I would love to browse fresh farmer's markets and buy/cook what catches my eye, but the kid factor and time constraints don't allow for that, plus I am way too tired for the multiple trips that would take! So, I am a die hard planner and as my kids get older, they have their day to chose their "favorite" and I try to make one night a week to test something fun and new. If it is a hit, it goes on the rotation list - nothing worse than getting in that food rut...
radley24 at 10:59PM on 08/18/07
If I don't have a plan, it's too tempting to head for a favorite eatery. Also, I save money by coordinating my week's plan ahead of time. I shop once every seven to 10 days and that reduces the "impulse" to eat out. I also make stock or cook portions of meals on the weekend when longer/slower cooking is possible.
Almost nothing worse, in my mind, than walking in the door, bone tired, at 6:00 pm and not knowing what's for dinner. However, there are at least 6 good eating spots close to my office and they all know me by name.

I usually try to plan at least 2 dinner meals. It's just me and my boyfriend, so each of those meals will generally have leftovers that will feed us for another 2-3 days. Weekends we often eat out since there are so many great restuarants withing walking distance from our home.
Breakfast and lunch I generally plan and make ahead of time for the whole week (usually on Sunday) so I can just grab a breakfast and lunch from the fridge in the morning and eat them at work. Then I'm less likely to spend money at a Dunkin Donuts or the school's cafeteria.

Being on a budget, meal planning is important for us. When I don't plan ahead, our monthly grocery budget skyrockets. I generally plan for 10 days at a time. I don't assign specific food to a specific day, but I do have a running list that says what meals I can make with on-hand ingredients. I try really hard to limit my grocery shopping to one day per week.
Having a well-stocked pantry is a great help, but this past winter we had to live out of our well-stocked pantry. Re-stocking empty shelves with several months worth of food is a very costly endeavor.

I'm another planner. I plan dinners for Sunday-Thursday and lunches for at least three days. I have a large dinner repertoire and mix it up depending on what's in season, how much money I have, and if I've seen anything interesting online or on the Food Network. I place my food order on Saturday and it's delivered on Sunday at noon. I usually have fish on Sunday since it's delivered that day and because that's a quick dinner to prepare I do any other time-consuming prep for later in the week (e.g., poaching chicken and cooking tomatillos for chicken enchiladas). I wish I was as organized in other areas of my life as I am with the food part but the food part is a budget breaker if it's not planned.

i walk into the grocery store, see whats on sale and plan as im walking around...
sassysprite at 3:56PM on 08/20/07
My boyfriend and I never used to plan our meals, but we found that the busier we got, the less healthy we ate. So we now sit down on Sundays and plan out dinners for Monday-Thursday. The weekends we tend to just go with the flow.
We save alot of time knowing what we are going to have for supper- whomever gets home first can start cooking right away. Plus I fine we are better at using up what ingredients we have- less stuff seems to go in the garbage.
I wish we had more time to be spontaneous cooks during the week- but at least we have the weekends!
IronPlatypus at 4:59PM on 08/20/07
I must plan, or I end up spending money I do not have on stupid 4 pound sandwiches at M&S. I usually spend all of sunday cooking and preparing salads and snacks for the week so I don't eat myself into obesity for the sake of convieniance

I absolutely plan ahead. I try to make the same thing over a couple nights in some form or another so I can use up what I buy (right now I'm on a salad niçoise kick for dinner because it's so damn hot). If I don't plan ahead I wind up with tons of beautiful impulse-purchased items that go to waste.
nerdling at 7:02PM on 08/20/07
I plan ahead...by about an hour.
Luckily I'm only cooking for myself and I live in a city where I can pretty much get what I need at the last second...oherwise I could see things going downhill.
Annmarie at 11:53PM on 08/20/07
I too like to plan. I get some odd enjoyment from going through the grocery flyers on Friday evening and planning meals around what's on sale that week. I usually only shop once a week and I like to plan about 3-4 dinners a week. As others have indicated, that allows for some flexibility, and its just my husband and I, so there are usually leftovers for lunches or another night's dinner. This usually works pretty well: it keeps us on budget and eating healthily.
psychsarah at 9:43AM on 08/21/07
I'm a planner, too. I sit down every Saturday night and make out a plan of the what we're having. I plan the whole week but leave 2 nights free. Then I sit down with my kids and they each plan a meal. We go shopping on Sunday morning and generally stick to the plan. My son wants to cook through Julie Sahni's Classic Indian cooking. Sometimes we can find the ingredients he needs (we're in small-town Mississippi), and sometimes we just make do. My daughter is cooking from a Disney cookbook so... well...we're having fun.

Ah, glad to see there are other planners out there. I started just a few months ago when my husband and I were reviewing our credit card spending. Ooops...too many restaurants, that newlywed thing I think. So now I do a big shop (either Fresh Direct or Whole Foods mixed in with the Union Sq. farmer's market) on Saturday and plan at least 4 meals (which gets us 5) for the week. Idea being we won't head out to eat if there's a nice steak or hunk of lamb in the fridge.
Been working swimmingly I might add as a budgeting method. We always marvel how these gorgeous dinners usually cost less than $7 a person when you break it all down. Yay for knowing how to cook! ;)

People love it when the site I work for sends out weekly meal planners. The 7 day planners are always in high demand so there must be SOME people out there still planning their meals. :)

I'm a big time planner. Usually I pick out recipes for 5 nights of the week (the other two we go out or eat leftovers) and make a grocery list Saturday morning and then grocery shop that afternoon (don't even get me started on my elaborately organized grocery lists). Then I make my "menu" for the week--weighing what needs to be cooked/will go bad fastest and go from there. Since my husband and I work full-time and I get home a couple of hours before him (and I am the cook in the family, he's the cleaner), it's a great comfort to come home in the evening and know both what I'm making, how much preparation is involved, and that I have all of the ingredients. As far as what recipes I choose, it's usually a mix of old favorites, things that have caught my eye in magazines, and one from a cookbook I'm working through. Sometimes when I'm feeling really uncreative I'll pick all 5 recipes from that month's Cooking Light or Gourmet.

I shop once each week, in theory on Saturdays, and make my llist over the course of the week as we run out of things or I have an "inspired" thought about what sounds good/fun/interesting to make the next week. I generally plan three or four meals per week and we eat leftovers or make sandwiches or salads the rest of the week. Also, I attempt to cook seasonally and locally, at least with regard to produce.
I'm a bit more flexible with meats because I just can't afford the boutique meat markets, even though we only cook meals with meat about once a week in summer and twice each week in winter. I grew up on a working cattle and sheep ranch and we grew our own poultry and goats as well, so I know good meat when I see it. I've found a big box grocer, Food Max for those with one near them, that sells choice meat and that's worked out well.
I've been trying to convince my son to take up salmon fishing, though. Living in an agricultural area, we won't eat bottom feeders (catfish) or any fish that don't migrate because agricultural fertilizers and pesticides run off into streams and rivers.
