I used to eat ________after school

The snax that I relied on most often was graham crackers dipped in a cold glass of milk. Rootbeer floats, when I could get away with it! Thinking back to your school days, what were your favorite snacks after a long day in class?

36 Comments:

Chocolate chip cookies and a cold glass of milk. No homemade cookies? Forced to munch on a few ginger snaps or vanilla wafers. Otherwise, it was a bologna sandwich on white bread with mayo.

Out, grape drink and a slice; at home, Tang, straight out of the jar, cocktail peanuts, frozen waffles.
Alas, when I hit high school and became determined to shrink to a size two, it was more likely a Tab and a cigarette.

Forgot a mainstay--Welch's grape jelly on folded-over Silvercup bread.

My fondest memory related to an after school snack was when we would be greeted at the door by the aroma of freshly baked bread. Mom would have a loaf already sliced and ready. The Chunky Peanut Butter, homemade jelly, Butter and Cheese Whiz would be set out & waiting to top the still warm bread.

Leftover London broil, sliced, dipped in ranch dressing. No idea how I came up with the combo or why it worked, but it always hit the spot.

Wheat Thins dipped in strawberry yogurt. My mom wasn't one of "those" moms, so this usually held me over until dinner time (frozen chicken tenders)

Reddi- Whip squirted directly into my mouth. Mmm mmm good.

A 5 cent, 7oz. bottle of Vernor's ginger ale and two long pretzels that were two for a penny. Both from Mrs. Heffles neighborhood store. Yes, I'm that old!

Hanover's thick sourdough pretzels and orange juice. I also went through a Periogi stage.

Stopped for potato chips and coke at the store. At home, in front of General Hospital, peanut butter cup ice cream and stoned wheat thins toasted with a little mayo and cheese.

Fortunately I walked two miles each way to school.

White bread with butter and chocolate sprinkles.

always a bowl of cereal

"Reddi- Whip AIR squirted directly into my mouth. Mmm mmm good"

For some reason I got quite light headed...but felt great!

:)

My goodness I can't get over how unhealthy all of these "snacks" are....and we wonder why kids are obese...

As a kid I wasn't allowed to snack after school unless I really truly was hungry and in that case it'd be a piece of fruit or maybe some celery sticks with peanut butter.

Speaking of unhealthy, when my brother and I were young, my dad used to work for the company that owned Entemann's bakery (at the time it was Warner Lambert). We ALWAYS had an entire cabinet of really bad-for-you eats. My favorites were the chocolate chip cookies and the chocolate honey crumb donuts. I haven't eaten any of that stuff in about 11 years or so, but every time I walk past a display in the stores, it brings me back to my teen years living at my father's house.

I didn't learn how to eat like a healthy person until I moved out.

Some of us grew up as Baby Boomers during the post-war and somewhat naive Eisenhour era. "Twilgith Zone" host Rod Serling often delivered his opening monologue holding a lighted cigarette. Kool-Aid, a bargain at a nickel-a-packet, nonetheless required an entire cup of sugar! But we weren't obese in those days of black-and-white TV and absent even the most primitive Atari . . . we climbed trees, ran races, walked to and from school, and played neighborhood games long after sunset, until our moms hollered threats to us from the front porch. I was a skinny little kid well into my teens, and once sent off for that Weight-On serum. Bet very few posters remember that stuff . . . don't miss all that "unhealthy" food (well, maybe just a little), but do miss that youthful metabolism

I was a key latch kid from 10 years old, so I ate whatever I wanted when I got home from school! Good thing I have a great metabolism! =)

JEP, you always have the best forum topics!

Haven't thought about afterschool snacks in years...let's see...I guess I liked having another PB&J sandwich, even though that would often be my lunch too. Milk and cookies would have also sufficed. Other than that, I'm not too much of a "snacker" as I would have preferred something like a McDonalds hamburger trip in the afternoon back then.

Chew on That

We used to go to my grandmother's every day after school where the adults would have drip coffee and gossip and the kids would get cut up hot dogs with sliced chesse melted on each individual slice and we would eat them with a tooth pick. In high school, after dance practice, I'd go and get a double cheeseburger at Burger King. It really saddens me that I was able to do that and eat dinner later and still was only a size 0, if only my metabolism where still the same.

Fantastic answers! Shows how varied our backgrounds & taste preferences are---thanks for all of the comments. It's fun to recall memories of the "important stuff in life". FYI--- I am also one of those Baby Boomers.

My grandmother lived with us when I was growing up. As soon as we'd walk in from school, she'd ask "How was your day? Are you hungry? Can I make you something?" She wouldn't wait for your response to the second and third questions -- she'd just start making something quick like grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup or a quick salad with canned tuna on top.

We had a lemon tree in our back yard and she would make a "lemon salad" that only she and I could stand: several sectioned lemons, olive oil, salt and pepper. We'd eat it with leftover italian bread...my mouth waters just thinking about it :-)

the zen kitchen

You're right; those of us in the first generation to race home to a tv snacked just as badly as our kids did, although I firmly believe we drank more milk, and as our offspring and their kids age, the difference will show up. But there were bologna and cheese and mayo sandwiches, Fritos and bananas, a handful of cookies, bread and butter and jelly sandwiches, grilled cheese sandwiches, Popsicles, leftover stuff from trick or treating or Easter baskets, the last of last night's pie or cake----but you get the idea.

'Tain't the food in the snack that's the difference, to a considerable degree, it's the lack of physical activity. (And the fast food for breakfast en route to school and the same for dinner several nights a week.)

I was a big fan of cheese fries from Steak and Shake or Cheez Whiz with crackers. Hard to believe I was always underweight for my age!

Eggo Waffles and pretzels

Popcorn, made on the stove the old-fashioned way: in hot oil with melted butter and salt added at the end. If you haven't made real popcorn in awhile, you should head to the kitchen right now.

It's funny that most of our snacks are pretty much junk food. I know mine was - I loved instant oatmeal after school, and I tried it again once I was in college... I was pretty disgusted with the memory of how many freeze-dried apples I consumed.

Spaghettios with cheese and meatballs while watching Sesame Street with my younger sister - quite possibly the highlight of my childhood :)

Pepperoni or salami with a chunk of cheese and a hunk of bread.

It's interesting to think about all the stuff I gorged myself on when I was young, without becoming obese. However, I also remember being an athlete in high school, practicing and working out up to 4 hrs a day and competing on weekends. Good topic, JEP.

Thanks to everyone for sharing comments----it is fun getting to know everyone thru bits & pieces of info about food preferences!

Ditto on the cold milk and graham crackers. Chocolate chip cookies were a favorite, too. The graham crackers and chocolate chip cookies sound great right now!!

slices of apple with malt vineager and salt, cheddar cheese on crackers, celery sticks with onion soup mix and sour cream dip. Oh, it was so healthy...

Hand to Mouth

cinnamon toast with margarine (before we knew trans-fats were evil!) and a yogurt, or "easy mac" and a glass of milk, or often just a huge bowl of cereal...

my mum was a stay home mum when i was at school, so there was always cut up fruit, veggie sticks and crackers with dip, healthy muffins and cakes (freshly baked) and for a treat, iced donuts or sweet bsicuits from the store ^^

in jr high my afterschool snacks were usually a baked apple or sometimes I got out my great grandmas "pot fork" and toasted a couple of marshmellow directly over the gas flame on the stove. by the time I hit high school, it was usually a cup of black coffee on my way to work.

I went through a big stage of cheese on bread - cheese melted on bread in a microwave - yum. But i moved on to cereal - tastier and healthier!
