I kinda just rotate between the food channel and the discovery channel with the previous channel button, I guess I throw a little ESPN in there once in a while but its pretty much always on in the background, except for when sandra lee or rachel ray is on then i'd rather go chew on tacks.

I've really reduced my Food Channel intake in the past year and a half.
There's probably some kind of Food TV food pyramid to be constructed, with your "whole grains" and your "proteins" etc. As it's late, I won't bother.

GH! Kbear,I hate Emeril too. He just grates on my nerves with his whole, “Bam! Food of love thing, babe and ESSENSE of Emeril “ I seriously want to slap him upside the head sometimes (and I’m not a violent woman lol).. I do enjoy having the food channel on in the background whilst I do my laundry, cook, clean an whatnot. I find it comforting to have someone cooking in the background and I’m still miffed that Rachel Rae stole my wordage; “STOUP” (i.e. a soup that is almost as thick as a stew). If my gran-gran was sill alive she’d have totally stuck up for me and said, “Hey, my grandbaby thought that word up longgggg before you?!”

I have gone from watching the food network for at least 2 hours a day, to watching 1 hour a week. I am not excited by any of the programming. The food star chefs have become shallow, and full of themselves. They need to bring back some grit and spontaneity. The shows are so rehearsed and polished, which I think is boring.
Mich23 at 7:28AM on 08/16/07
I'm down to one hour on Sunday -- Iron Chef; the rest is not worth watching. Even Iron Chef is getting a little tired, maybe the Next Iron Chef in October will be good. I'll give it a try.
ride&cook at 8:43AM on 08/16/07
used to watch much more...i watch the second season of Feasting on Asphalt, i painfully watched the Next Food Network Star (mainly so I could really enjoy Bourdain's posts on Michael Ruhlman's blog following each episode) and i'll watch Iron Chef America if i catch it. but since shows like Molto Mario left, it's been mainly Top Chef and Bourdain: No Reservations for me. i do have a soft spot in my heart for the Contessa, though.
rebeccadiamond at 9:12AM on 08/16/07
i'm over the food network. very few of the cooks on there inspire me.
i like Jacques Pepin on PBS, Nathan Lyon on Discovery Health, and I also like Ming Tsai.
all in all probably 2 hours a week or so.
ceforrester at 9:18AM on 08/16/07
None. I canceled my directv subscription earlier in the summer. However I do get Top Chef via iTunes and I steal "No Reservations" from the net after the show airs (since the travel channel is too shortsighted to put the show on their website or iTunes).
That's about it. On occasion I will bring up Joost and watch an australian cooking show ...

I've basically stopped watching the Food Network. It's unwatchable and devoid of credibility. I'll watch Bourdain and Zimmerman on the Travel Channel and sometimes let FN run when the Sox aren't on. That being said, I've pretty much stopped watching TV altogether, but since I have no appetite for work this morning, I'll rate the FN for anyone who cares (myself), with the caveat that I'm easily fooled by boobies:
Likes: Roker, A. Brown, Flay (before Throwdown), Florence, Cora, Batali, De Laurentiis, O'Connor
Dislikes: Lieberman, Ray, Iron Chefii, Garten, Lee, Rivers, Cognac, Goldman, Fieri, Puck, Summers, W. Brown
Fence-sitters: Duran, Krieger, Lagasse, Chiarello, Moulton
Hate: the Deen family.
Who?: Blumer, Smith, Hoffman, Lawson, Marr, Irvine, Miller, McDonagh, Gand, Pickney, Hourigan, Phillips, Waxman, Schaber
I'll watch Pepin, but remain suspicious of his recipes.
jayfallon at 10:01AM on 08/16/07
I'll watch Good Eats and Dinner Impossible when I have a chance. I Tivo Feasting on Asphalt since I'm a fan of Alton and he puts together a good show. Occasionally I'll watch other shows if they are featuring a recipe that I'm interested in, otherwise I'll keep flipping through. Truthfully, I end up with ESPN on most of the time in the background because cooking and watching TV is difficult with a 1 yr old.

Zilch. Too personality driven, too superficial.

I used to like watching the food network a lot, but then they started showing rachael ray all of the time. Along with her meals taking more than thirty minutes, they also weren't very good. I noticed that this was a running theme throughout a lot of the new programming. The only shows that I watch on the channel now are Molto Mario (when I can catch it), Iron Chef, Ina Garten, and Giada (She's a bit too perky for me, but she has good recipes). I'll watch some of the other shows if I'm up to it, in particular Good Eats, Easy Entertaining, and Essence of Emeril (it was the show that got me into food network). But, in terms of hours, probably like 3-5 hours/week.
acespeed at 12:57PM on 08/16/07
I may catch A. Brown once in a while. Prefer saturday morning PBS cooking shows.
Colorado Jim at 1:19PM on 08/16/07
I used to like the Food Network (I remember when they first came on and had great chefs like Pasquale, and old reruns of the Galloping Gourmet and Martin Yan), but now can't stand it. Alton Brown is cool, and sometimes Mario still cooks for his friends, but otherwise its become a marketing vehicle for the big food industry, who wants to sell you more crap and doesn't want to teach you how to cook fennel. I've grown to hate it.
But in NYC at least, there is fantastic food TV on channel 21 on Monday nights. My favorites are Jacques Pepin and Mark Bittmann's show. They are the only things I watch regularly on TV. Everyday Food is surprisingly good (I always get at least one good idea from it) as well, but Todd English is an egotistical ass. My only complaint is that sometimes WLIW kicks off the food line up for some fundraiser, like the Paul Anka / Bobby Vale Marathon. Can't they please relegate the geriatric specials to Friday nights or at least before 9? If you like 50's pop, hey that's fine, I couldn't care less, just let me have my one hour of good food TV a week.
hreisig at 1:22PM on 08/16/07
I used to watch the Food Network religiously....at least 5-6 hours a week. But now Top Chef on Bravo (and just Bravo in general) has replaced that!

bittman's great. i'd rather watch one of his NYT.com minimalist "how-to" videos 30x in a row back-to-back than one "30-minute meals."
rebeccadiamond at 1:53PM on 08/16/07
I used to watch the Food Network a lot more, but now I mostly TIVO what I want to see each week. I don't like Emeril and I am tired of Rachael Ray, but I do occasionally TIVO Alton Brown, Giada Delaurentis, Ina Garten, "Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives", and anything else that looks interesting. I also TIVO or watch new episodes of Iron Chef. I love being able to "zip" thu the commercials and watch a 30 minute show in about 15 minutes!
amylou61 at 2:39PM on 08/16/07
I don't. I do watch Top Chef, Bourdain, Pepin, and some others.
BaHa at 2:48PM on 08/16/07
No TV, so maybe I don't count, but it's just as well, because I spend more than enough time looking at seriouseats every day.
As for videos, I adore Mark Bittman; didn't know he had a TV show, maybe I'll have to hunt that down.

I might tune in to Dining on Asphault. But basically Tuschman and crew make me annoyed. They cna keep the sponsored by cheeze whiz network.
Sandra Lee and the crew of less than talented people make me bristle.
I am all Retchel Rayed out.
JerzeeTomato at 1:35AM on 08/17/07
At this point, I tivo Feasting on Asphalt; I catch maybe an episode a week of Good Eats, though usually at 11pm when I'm doing other things getting ready to get in bed and I usually watch some of Iron Chef America about once every two weeks or so. So, in a week, an hour on average I'd say, but only when Feasting on Asphalt is on, otherwise, about a half an hour.
I tivo Jaques Pepin every week on PBS.
ccbweb at 1:10PM on 08/17/07
On Food Network, I Tivo Mario (the one day a week he's on), Flay, Nigella, Alton Brown, Ellie Krieger and Iron Chef (the old one). Otherwise I get my food programming from Discovery Home (Kylie Kwong), Fine Living (Mario reruns, Ming rereuns and Andrea Immer), BBC America (Ramsay's The F-Word, Kitchen Nightmares), Bravo (Top Chef) and PBS (more Ming, Diary of a Foodie, and Rick Bayliss).

I enjoy Food Network! I AM SO GLAD THAT THEY FINALLY PUT AFRICAN AMERICANS ON THERE TO SHARE SOME RECIPES THAT I CAN RELATE TO. I am not interested in panini or vinaigrette....give me soul food & my family is happy!! I am glad that they are more diverse now & I will watch them even more now, since I will be getting recipes that my whole family are used to & will be able to enjoy! THANX FOOD NETWORK...KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!
Also, dont be so hard on Rachel Ray....she is not a chef & it just shows how food network is not so fast to judge others, they accepted her & the audience saw themselves in her & that is how she has became so famous. She IS goofy, but that just reminds me that she is human! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK RACHEL!! JUST (PLEASE) get rid of the goofy laugh....she laughs at LEAST 4 times a show & it is beginning to DRIVE US CRAZY!! lol
