Falafel First

How old were you when you first ate falafel? Where did you eat it? I think I was 17 and I ate it at the Olive Tree in NYC but I am not sure..still trying to conjure up the memories.

Oh, man, memories! My first felafel was in 1976: I was 18 and attending an ulpan in Kiryat Shmona in northern Israel. There was a felafel stand in the main square that had the best I've ever had--even elsewhere in Israel. Instead of shredded lettuce, they used a kind of pickled cabbage, like a sweet-and-sour sauerkraut, shredded very fine. It transformed the taste completely. I've been dreaming of that felafel for 30 years!

Began eating falafel and tabouleh at age 7. Blame it on my mama. I love falafels and especially tahini.

Where did you grow up?

I remember my first time very well. I was at my good friends house one day after school and she made falafel. I had never even heard of it before, but I liked it. I was about 15, and I've been eating it ever since!

I was 9 and visiting Israel for the first time. I hated it then and I'm still not too fond of it! Maybe one day I will come around :)

Chew on That

I can't remember the first time I had falafel, but I definitely fell in love with it at Oasis Falafel in Iowa City, IA. If anyone is driving through the area, it's definitely worth a stop!
