Do you cook for your pets?

Unfortunately, I do not have a pet as I am allergic to animal dander. Friends say their pets are truly part of the family & prepare meals and treats for them. I have seen those "do not feed these to pets lists". Curious----do you prepare special meals or bake treats for your pets?

Um, yeah ... uh, NO! I love my pets, but definitely not enough to cook for them. Does that make me a bad person? I hope not. That being said, I do give them the fat and bones that I cut out of meat during prep time. I am an animal lover (3 dogs, one cat and a rat) but I have enough to worry about making sure my kids get fed a hot meal without worrying that the dogs are eating gourmet. LOL

Eh...once in a while I cook some chicken for my babies (I have 3 spoilt rotten boy cats).

My baby (youngest) is my favorite (I know, I know...Mommy's aren't supposed to have favorites...guilty as charged). My youngest loves to sleep on my back when I'm trying to sleep or he'll cuddle into my lap...sometimes I truly think that *he* thinks he OWNS *ME*. :)))

I mostly feed my babies 'Wellness' brand cat food because it's human grade food and after the whole pet food recall scare I FREAKED and I was so glad I had them on the Wellness stuff. I won't regale you of my youngest boy's traumas from eating dry food before I switched him to wet food...ugh!

Anyhoo, I think it's okay to once-in-a-while give a pet some human food treats but I wouldn't recommend it on the daily. I tried to get my youngest baby on a raw food diet and he shook his paw at it and refused to eat. -So, basically I'm stuck giving my babies the best commercial food I can find them.

BTW, my daughter is allergic to pet dander but I keep her room 'clean' and never let my cats in her room and she does fine...a pet will love you unconditionally, give you big, happy 'boo-boo' eyes that will melt your heart and they'll be your friend through thick-n-thin. :D

During the dog food scare our dogs food had a flavor that was recalled and even though it was not the flavor I feed them I decided to stop feeding it to them. I instead and for several months made ground turkey, veggies and rice for my dogs. Each batch I cooked lasted 3 meals, which meant I had to cook every third day. I would nuke it to warm and they loved it.
I researched and found a brand that had no ingredients imported and switched them over to it.
On pasta day my dogs get a small portion of non sauced pasta.
They also partake of scrambled and hard boiled egg, bacon, cheese and grape tomatoes. I never feed them too much as that causes diarrhea.
As a snack they get trader joe cat cookies.
They are very trim and fit, all things in moderation.

Emphatically yes, and quite a few of my friends do also. I feed a kibble made with human grade meats, and quite a nice variety of fruits and veggies (yes, I have eaten some just to see if it tastes ok). The home cooked part is added to the kibble and gives a variety of meals so they don't get bored.
My cooking for dogs is lean meat of any kind that is on sale at the grocery, sometimes potato, sometimes pasta, whatever veggies are "in stock" in the frig, and any leftover basmati rice (the only kind we currently have in the pantry). It is divvied up and some frozen for future meals.
My dogs also like almost any fruits and veggies, do not wave a green bean in front of them, it is like a red cape to a bull...... Most notable no-no is onions, not good for dogs. They also aren't crazy for grapefruit, one likes orange, and both of them qualify as 'nanner gators.....offer piece of bananna, remove fingers quickly, they are on 'nanners big time.
Check out a web site called Boxer Life and look at the drop down menu for cooking. This guy is serious and his dogs are fit and trim and obviously happy.
We eat modestly but well and we feel our dogs will be like us and live to be old farts if they eat well.

Thanks for sharing comments about how you feed your pets. The Boxer Life site is interesting----thanks dmzapp---I like your theory also---makes perfect sense!

For now I am down to one pet - a 12 year old Husky. He is quite spoiled.
While I don't cook just for him, he often gets "regular" food mixed in with his kibble. Pasta, rice, ground meat. He loves vegetables. One time I dropped a whole carrot on the floor - never seen an old dog move so fast! His favorite food, though, is bananas. During the summer I keep them frozen for him.

I just got a puppy and would like to make heathy, natural treats for him. Any suggestions?

I dont cook for my "kids" on a regular basis, but every year around the holidays I make them treats. usually its homemade liver snaps but if I find an eye of the round roast on sale, I make them homemade jerky minus the spices etc, basically just dried meat. btw. the dried plain meat makes a great camping food, just break it up and make a wonderful soup or stew.

My dog, Guinness, eats a raw diet. It's made with ground meat, bone, and organ (choice of beef, lamb, turkey, chicken, duck, venison, pork, rabbit, etc). It comes in long frozen tubes and looks like tartare when defrosted.

We do it because I like to know exactly what's in his food and where it comes from. Plus, his body is meant to digest food (mostly protein) in its raw form. Costs about $30/month.

I'd be happy to pass along more information to anyone who's interested. He is super healthy and energetic, has a rich and shiny coat, and nice fresh breath!

my dog will eat anything, but it's particularly funny watching him eat watermelon while my kids hold it for him (he does not like the rind!)
