Buying Generic FoodStuffs vs. Brandname.....
When shopping what % of your grocery cart is filled with generics and what % with name brands? (counting things that have generics NOT ex. bag of yellow onions)
What are certain brands where you can taste a distinct difference?
What are things where there is no taste difference to you?
How much do you think adverts on TV affect your purchasing habits?

What a great post! You know what? Sometimes I actually perfer *gasp* store brand things over name-brand things! Go figure? I buy the store brand stuff when it really makes no dif to me. I buy store brand peanut butter, store brand organic raisin brand cereal, organic store brand milk.
But, that being said, I have to say...I was FURIOUS when I ordered some ''supposed' apple cider vinegar in bulk under the 'store brand' and sure enough...it read right on the label "flavored"...grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I'm still clenching my fists and teeth about THAT one. I guess I should call and complain but it's like 5 bux or so and I only complain when the anty is up to like...20 bux or so.
I'm probably being a pissant but the truth is, if folks like 'us' don't say something than the next sucker will come along and feel jipped too...am I making any sense?

I don't buy a lot of processed stuff -- for stocks, beans, and canned tomatoes it is name brand (am I allowed to name?), and for peanut butter I get the store brand natural stuff. How can you go wrong with peanuts ground chunky? The name brand for flavor and quality.

Update:
I got a refund for the vinegar I ordered...Ahhhhhhhhhh it feels so good to be vindicated. *YIPPPEEEEEEEEEEEE*!

I agree with ride&cook about buying so few processed goods that I have little opportunity to make the choice between name brand and store brand. When I do have a choice to make, I always choose the best quality for the price.... and 9 times out of 10, that is the generic/store brand!
However, I disagree that all peanut butter is the same! I take my crunchy peanut butter VERY seriously (eating it everyday of my life, no fail) and I have to say there is great difference in taste and quality between brands. Here I am selective and buy a particular Name brand that is more expensive then other storebrand...but boy is it worth it every bite!

Hey, stareater -- is that Deaf Smith Valencia Peanut butter ??!! Ooooh, it is the best, but my store doesn't carry it. Gawd, I love it!

I'm picky about my ketchup and mustard...Heinz ONLY! Especially the ketchup.
I'm picky about hotdogs too. None of those cheap, filler, gritty tasting dogs for me. *gag* I go for Hebrew National or Mt. Sinai.
And I have a certain type of bread that I buy.
Besides that, I try not to buy much processed food and when I do I'm not real particular of the brand. I do read the labels though, looking for extra added sugars and sodium.

I almost always get generic frozen veggies as well as cans of generic corn, sliced 'shrooms and tomato paste.

I'm a big fan of Trader Joe's label. They consistently have the best nuts and dried fruits I've found in a store. Otherwise, I tend to stick to certain brands for certain things. For example, my husband and I prefer Arrowhead Mills for organic chunky peanut butter, almond butter and tahini.
