An apple a day...
What is your favorite apple variety and why? I've not branched out a lot, but the favorite of what I've tried are the Honeycrisps.

Agreed! Minnesota honeycrisps are the best part of fall. I could eat them for every meal.

Pink Ladies without a doubt. I dont know if you have them overseas, but they're ruby red, very sweet tasting and just slightly tart and extremely crisp. A cold one from the fridge satisfys the sweet tooth on a hot day.

Granny smiths are my alltime favorites, but honeycrisp is a close second.

love fuji year round as well, but I also love a jumbo red delicious and have actually started really liking pink ladies.

Mutsu, Honeycrisp, and Empire are my three favorites, but I enjoy just about every apple out there, as long as it's not mushy.

I have to throw in my vote for pink ladies...they're sweetness is countered by a good amount of acid and they actually taste like apples.
I like honeycrisps, too -- I just don't think they have that classic "apple" taste.

I must say... Pink Ladies have my vote. I've been looking for Honeycrisps....when are they in season?

Mmmm, I love honeycrisps! Pink ladies are also great, but I actually just bought a bag from whole foods, and the first one I tried was a little mealy :(
Fujis are usually good (and can be great), but I've been disappointed by them several times when they're super crisp, but almost totally flavorless! Galas and Cameos can be pretty good sometimes, but are equally often soft or bland. I'm also a big fan of the perfect granny smith. When they have the perfect balance of sweet and sour, and are super crisp, they can be awesome!
What are Mutsus like? I've never heard of them

A couple of years ago, when I first tasted a pink lady (sounds kind of weird), I fell in love with them and bought them every chance I could get. Then all of a sudden, they disappeared! I asked the produce guy what happened and he said that they were only available in the fall through early winter.
I have seen them practically year-round this year, so I'm guessing there are some international sources now? At any rate, I'll bet that the fall pink ladies from Washington State will be good...I'm looking forward to when they show up in my market :-)

I've never had a honeycrisp. My favorite is Red Delicious! Usually I'm alone in that one though.

Cortlands, then Granny Smith.

I definitely also enjoy Pink Ladies. But given an option, I'll almost always go for Fuji or Pacific Rose. I think it's because I grew up on Fuji apples as a kid.
I love crunch and crisp apples, so it's always so disappointing when they're not sweet! I've never actually had a really good Delicious apple (either red or gold). Just my bad luck?
