Question of the Day: When left uninspired, what dish do you fall back on to feed the masses?

In my house [a 24yoF, 25yoM, and 26yoM here], it's gyudon [Japanese beef bowl] a la Matsuya [a gyudon chain I lived for in Japan], "Italian Dating Soup" [my version of Wedding Soup - for my boyfriend and I], or sandwiches of jar'd Italian vegetable goodness, provolone, prosciutto, various random condiments, and turkey breast, wrapped in foil, and baked under my cast iron skillet to the point of hot, crusty goodness.

Et vous?

My go to dish for dinner is usually a roasted chicken with lemons, onions butter ,herbs, salt and pepper. I serve it with roasted yukon gold potatoes, or lemon parsley orzo. I always get raves. My other specialty is making a salad. I'm creative enough to make a salad from whatever is in the house. In the summer , I love one with mixed greens, avocado, corn, tomato, chopped red onion, cilantro, in a lemon vinaigrette. Or, if tomatoes look great, there is always mozzarella, tomato and basil in olive oil and balsamic vinegar . My go to dessert is always some kind of bread pudding. Easy and yummy!

Mine are zucchini soup (easy to make but looks like it took hours) and things easily grilled: yakitori, shrimp on skewers as well, ribs and, of course, brisket picked up down the road at the BBQ joint when no-one's looking!

I also fall back on roasted chicken but with oranges, garlic, herbs, salt, and pepper with sauted green beans in butter.

i always fall back on the dependable roast beef dinner.

A big Caesar salad, homemade pizza (I'll buy the dough), or a construct-your-own burritos/tacos spread. If it's just one other person, Mexican baked trout with sesame seeds, lime, and butter.

Honestly? Stir-fry, with lots of veggies. Sometimes if I get industrious and have udon in the house, I make lo mein. Or broiled chicken, with tomatoes and asparagus.

buffalo burgers. then I tell my standard joke to watch out for the long, pointy hairs inside. gets a chuckle every time

I'll make a big pot of Texas Red chili when I need to feed a bunch of folks. It's easy to make and pretty inexpensive.

Another roasted chicken here. Prefer the parts the whole. I do it with bell pepper (red or orange), diced sweet potato, onion, garlic, fresh tarragon, and plenty of S+P.

A one pot wonder, and when using the foil roasting pans from the supermarket, they just get tossed when done. No clean-up!

My Norwegian partner's mother's fish stew. Coley filets (or cod), which we always have in the freezer, tomatoes, leeks, lemon juice, thyme, garlic, salt, pepper. Served with boiled potatoes and soured cream.
It takes about half an hour to make, and it's real comfort food, and even people who are turned off by the idea of fish stew like it.

Some people might wince at the thought of a quick pot of spaghetti sauce but I've almost always got in the pantry what it take to make a good, basic sauce and pasta to feed family and any drop-ins.

Grilled pork loin, ribs, or pulled-pork BBQ sandwiches. Ah yes, there's something to be said for pork. :-)

Depends on who the masses are. If they are vegetarian or semi-veg, a big pot of my rice and beans will do the trick. I also make a tasty baked ziti that people ask for seconds on when served.

A big brunch is always a winner -- loads of freshly made waffles, pancakes, etc. mmm.

Pasta. I've always got good Parm in the fridge, so I just go from there with whatever we've got in. Sometimes in a tomatoey way, sometimes in a creamy way.

I'm with LunaPierCook.....pork loin can be cooked in so many different ways...I always have a small roast in the freezer & can either cook it whole on the grill or cut it into chops & grill those in such a short period of time.

Roasted chicken as well. I usually stuff it with onion, garlic, lemon quarters, rosemary and thyme, butter on the outside. Sometimes I make gravy from the drippings, and serve with a big salad and whatever side veggies I have on hand. The ultimate in comfort food that also never fails to impress!

I have a completely different interpretation of the question than most others seem to have. When I think of "the masses" I think of my family (hubby and 3 teens). For us, an uninspired meal involves packaged spaghetti, jarred sauce, frozen meatballs, and bagged salad. Now that's TRULY uninspired!

Risotto--there's always Arborio and stock on hand, plus whatever else I can come up with.

Vegetable lasagne or another pasta dish...
