I love popcorn at the movies. I used to sneak in home made carmel corn when I was younger :)

Junior mints if I am buying. My own trail mix blend if I am sneaking.

Definitely popcorn with butter. And if I'm feeling really naughty, then I'll throw in a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup!

You ask some great questions! I love getting popcorn. In my younger days I snuck in whole meals with my friends. How? Messenger bags, and portable food, like burgers that are wrapped tightly. Once I actually made salsa and chips and got that into the theater. It was much tastier than anything I've ever bought in the movie theater.

Junior mints, most definitely ... and sometimes, more than one box.

by far, sour patch kids.

How could it be anything else but popcorn with lots and lots of butter? Butter with popcorn comes in a close second.

Popcorn with butter. (Er, excuse me, butter-flavored topping.) Sometimes I like to buy peanut M & M's and dump them into the popcorn to get the whole salty-sweet combo, but it's rare that I do this.
I'm actually quite upset now that movie theaters don't butter the popcorn for you and send you instead to that dirty little butter pump. When I worked at a theater concession stand, this wasn't the case. We were taught to fill up the popcorn bucket halfway, then butter it with 3 pumps of butter, then fill it to the top and squirt three pumps of butter again. That's how you do it. With these DIY butter pumps, you only get to squirt butter on top :(
Also, while we're on this subject, I really hate that the theaters—at least here in New York—don't show their popcorn and drink sizes. I have to ask, then the clerk gets huffy and I'm like, "Well, maybe you should have DISPLAY SIZES?"
I'm constantly amazed at the difference between the Loew's theater's small and AMC's small—although I think AMC bought Loew's, so that will probably change. I think was at Loew's that a small is 32 ounces! I always had to get the kid-size drink.
OK. Enough of my complaining.
My answer: Popcorn with butter-flavored topping.

At the risk of sounding like a curmudgeon, I don't think people should eat during a good movie. If it's some mindless adventure flick, fine, but I think most movies should be watched, and not eaten through. I hate the sound of someone chomping and slurping right behind my head when I'm trying to concentrate on the movie. When I saw BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, some shlub brought along a big atrocious-smelling meatball-and-onion sandwich, which he ate all the way through the movie. The theater was packed, so I couldn't change seats. Such behavior is one of the main reasons I don't go to many movie theaters--I'd rather wait for the movie to be released on DVD, when I can own it for the cost of two movie tickets. I love movies and I love food, but not at the same time.

I have a trio of candies I rotate between: Sno-caps, Raisinets and Junior Mints. All delicious.
@Adam: First, there are definitely some theaters that butter your popcorn for you but I'm not sure what they are. I'll do some research. Also, here's a trick for those butter machines that I learned from an experienced movie-goer: grab a straw and stick it into the center of your popcorn. Then put the straw up to the butter machine. Voila!

Tom Steele - I feel the same way. No eating during a movie! Drinks during a movie is a different thing though and I love going to the movies in Europe and having an ice cold beer along with it!

Popcorn + Milkduds mixed in ... mmmm
smpowell at 2:15PM on 07/19/07
Yes, Ceforrester, I would definitely go for a cocktail during a movie. They don't make any noise! Unfortunately, if alcohol were served at American movie theaters, you know what would happen!
Reminds me--the only time I attended a football game, I was about 12, and these guys behind us were getting drunker and drunker, and they kept trying to show my aunt (sitting next to me) pictures of naked women, and she kept shooing them away, then one of them THREW UP all over her. She had to talk her way into the girl's locker room and get herself cleaned up enough to make the 50-mile drive home.

Popcorn with LOTS of butter and salt, and an ice cold cola (I like Whole Foods brand cola containing no high-fructose corn syrup)

BRILLIANT! THANK YOU! And thank your experienced movie-goer friend for me!

I always take a bar or a tiny box of filled chocolates - summer or winter. It always makes the movie more enjoyable.
flakevanille at 4:56PM on 07/19/07
As an Austinite, I'm spoiled by the Alamo Drafthouse. My favorite movie food is XX hot wings, and then a spicy bleu burger or Maximum Overdog.
Past that, popcorn. Hopefully with real butter.
