Whats the difference between Active Dry Yeast and Brewers yeast?

Whats the difference between Active Dry Yeast and Brewers yeast?

8 Comments:

They're actually the same type of yeast but prepared differently. When you purchase active dry yeast you are purchasing a product created by a manufacturer to foam and rise quickly and be able to last longer than a fresh block of yeast. The end product isn't the same as if you used fresh yeast (we all love the fresh stuff - evidenced by the strange addiction to pizza dough and croissants which use live yeast) but still pretty great. There are other yeasts that are used for brewing alcoholic beverages (depending on the beverage) but what is sold as brewer's yeast is the same type of yeast used both for baking and for brewing ale though it isn't put through the same process as active dry yeast and it is fortified with b vitamins and other things like calcium, to be taken as a nutritional supplement. There are other yeasts used in probiotic supplements but I'm not knowledgeable about all of those. If your question is about what to use for baking, you have to use "active dry yeast" to get the desired effect in baked goods, because it is a man-made product specially manufactured for just that purpose. Hope that helps you!

Both are Saccharomyces cerevisiae. One is used in baking as a leavening agent. The other is for brewers yeast for beer, wine and ale.
There are different types of yeasts for different types of brewing.

um, one tastes delicious - the other, not so much!! :)

i was wondering since someone suggested putting on popcorn which I put the active dry yeast on it since it was the only thing I had in the cupboard...if I put the brewer's years on it would it taste drastically different?

Never ingest active dry yeast. If you use brewers yeast as a flavoring use the tablets. My friend who raises golden labs uses it in her dogs food to keep the fleas off them. It may give you a distinct odor when you eat it. I know the dogs have a pungent beer smell. Brewers yeast is an ingredient in dog food. Whenever you ingest something live you need to know where it came from, ie the China import issues.

whoops i did ingest the active dry yeast...I haven't died yet...so how will the brewers yeast taste different than the active dry?

like previously mentioned. brewer's yeast actually tastes good. it's a substitute for "umami-ness" in vegan and vegetarian cooking. it has a cheesy, meaty, vaguely nutty taste. i'm addicted, but a non-vegetarian friend claims it tastes like "crazy, european cheese".

I have a home microbrewery setup and this leads me to my question. Is it possible to use the regular dry yeast the same as I would brewer's yeast?

I've made a few batches of home brewed beer and hard cider and after reading this thread I can't help but be curious. :D
