Tortilla press?

Here in DC, I have had a hard time finding really good corn tortillas, and am exploring making them myself. Does anyone have experience with this, and would you recommend buying a tortilla press, or is covering a cutting board with saran wrap an adequate hack?

I make them all the time and not only are they a snap to make, but taste far superior to anything store bought. I use a press because the corn dough is a bit hard to work with otherwise, but I do know people who roll them out or press them between two books or two cast-iron skillets. But a press shouldn't cost much, and it's sooooooooo simple to just throw on the dough ball, press down the lever, and flip the tortilla into the skillet.

Elise from Simply Recipes gave a little tutorial on how to make them. Here it is http://www.elise.com/recipes/archives/004141how_to_make_corn_tortillas.php

Emily, just buy a press, they are way cheap. Two pieces of clear plastic wrap, your corn dough and off you go. The tortillas will be much better than bought. I did find it helpful to have an "assistant" who took the dough balls and squashed them, then I did the removal and cooking, and put them on a platter to be kept warm. By myself the pan got too hot or too cold from my less then 100% attention to the cooking process.
I'm back to home made after my fave brand has just produced a wretched batch of premades.....everyone of them steamed or not broke, so they were too dry or too old or the company is about to go belly up.

Thanks everyone, good advice! I loved the Simply Recipes link.

Cheap is right: our local five-and-dime has them for $12 (aluminum). Somewhere on the web, though, I saw a wooden one that looked cool, so maybe I'll browse and see if I can get one of those locally.

Dangit, my already crowded kitchen is about to get another new cooking toy.
