Sesame pancake sandwiches @ Dumpling House, Chinatown
118A Eldridge St, NYC (at Broome) --
This place is apparently lauded for its fried pork dumplings (5 for $1), but most people I saw when I passed by last week were munching on these triangular sandwiches -- cut from a giant circular fried bread, crusted with sesame on one side, with sliced beef, cilantro and carrots. I was on my way to get a bahn mi on the other side of Canal, but these (at $1.50) are certainly a better deal. Delicious quick lunch. Check it out check it out.

OH MY GOD that thing is delicious. The bread alone is great. I second your recommendation.

Oh, yeah! Every time I'm in there chomping on dumplings, I watch the people in the triangular sandwich line eagerly awaiting their order. They make them to order and without fail there's always a line at least 5 people long when I'm there. I've never gotten one though because I am dreaming of dumplings as I am walking there and gorge out too much to fit in a triangular sandwich. What are those things called anyway? Gotta call my Ma and find out!

Yeah I'd like to know the proper name as well.
Also -- there's an egg and chive sandwich for $1.

I believe they're called shao bing (literally something like...baked flat cake/biscuit). Unfortunately, I'm not sure what they're called in Cantonese, I'll have to get back to you that one.
They're really amazing still warm with sliced soy marinated beef tendon or meat, scallions and a dab of sweet hoisin (just like Peking duck actually!) and some cilantro if you like.
Wash it down with a bowl of lightly-sweetened , cold soy milk...a classic breakfast or brunch!

Holy cow... I forgot about those. So delicious, but I always thought they needed a little salt. You can get a slice of the bread alone.

I heard this place closed. Does anyone know if it moved?

Sounds like it's closed temporarily for renovations until the new year.
