Red wine vinegar

I've always bought whatever red wine vinegar was handy at the supermarket. Something tells me I should be a bit more discerning. Are there varying qualities of red wine vinegar? And what should I be looking for?

along the same lines, i would like to make red wine vinegar, but have always been unsuccessful obtaining a "mother". any recommendations?

If you go to leeners.com, they have a section on making your own vinegars, but it seems they are currently out of stock on the mothers.

I lived in NY Italian neighborhoods for many years and became very picky about the taste of things marinated in oil and vinegar, salad dressing, etc. I've tried so many brands and nothing has worked for me like Eden Foods organic red wine vinegar -- I find it makes everything taste like it should. I'm curious what others think though.
