Where can I find Mex-Mex in Dallas, Texas?

I just moved to Dallas. I'm much close than I was (Chicago) to the Mexican border, but all the places I see are Tex-Mex style food. Where can I find some real Mex-Mex food? Thanks.

This is a challenge even for natives as we tend to conflate the two, and Tex-Mex is so very well-established here. But there are few places for sure that are not all about the border:
Cafe San Miguel on Henderson in E Dallas and Gloria's (chain) both offer Tex-Mex alongside traditional Mexican and Latin American fare.
Ciudad and La Duni on Oak Lawn; upscale fusion-y Latin and Mexican fare
Seafood: El Pulpo on Live Oak -
Javier's: Mexico-City Mexican in Park Cities.
Veracruz in Oak Cliff
The DallasNews.com Web site lists over 600 "Mexican" restaurants across the DFW area. It's a good place to start with reviews and maps...

My aunt and uncle always liked a place called Nuevo Leon for Mex-Mex food. I think it is on Lower Greenville, and we went there a few years ago and I really liked it, but I am sure there are a few in Dallas with that name, and although it was certainly not TexMex, the cuisine of northern Mexico is not that far from Tex-Mex anyway, and the lines have started to blur a bit more in the past few years at least most of the places we go in Austin.

They do love Veracruz as well and it is certainly pretty popular with the press. Someone loves a place called La Hechicera

Go find a La Michoacana market or La Guadalupana or a Rio Grande Supermercado and eat some tacos and ask a few questions, I've eaten some kick ass mole and . I know there are some on Maple St and some others on Jefferson. I think Chicago has some excellent Mexican food but I know that Dallas has it too, PLUS they have Tex-Mex, but I am from Texas and love interior and border and Tejano cuisine pretty equally, and Dallas has Burger House.

Good luck,
maybe tell us if you find anything you like.

The Nuevo Leon on Greenville Ave. was destroyed in the Arcadia Theater fire some months ago. Very sad. There is another Nuevo Leon - it's more low-key, traditional and I don't think the owners are the same - out in Farmers Branch on Valley View Lane. The salsas there are very good.

I love the suggestion to visit purveyors and ask questions - lucky us, we in Dallas have tons of neigborhood ethnic food vendors all over the area.

Indeed! Let us know where you end up!

These are all great suggestions. Thanks for helping out a northerner :) If you guys are ever in chicago and need tips on pizza, you know who to ask :)

Look for taquerias. They are kind of like Mexican diners.
