July 4th picnic. I'm taking______

Fill in the blank.
Going to a cook-out, family gathering or just planning a picnic-for-one on the 4th? What ONE food or beverage will you provide? I'm signed-up for homemade lemonade.

It took me years to crack the secret to my aunt's macaroni--not pasta-- salad, so I will happily serve that for our July 4th meal before going up to our apartment roof to watch the fireworks.
(By the way, the secret was no secret. She willingly gave me the recipe; it just took me ages to figure out--accidentally-- that she made it the night before, which makes it much creamier and yummier.)

I make potato salad that people attack. I usually make 5 lbs of it and never any left. Also make a string bean salad that is tasty.

My every year winner -- red white & blue fruit salad. Strawberries cut and sprinkled with sparing amounts of splenda, blueberries, and the big splurge: white chocolate chips. Oh so divine.

We decided to go very casual this year and not have a "meal" but to go with lots of finger foods that everyone can just snack on as the day goes and everyone is hanging out at the pool. My contribution will be per my sons request, some hotwings and I am going to smoke a salmon and make a lemon dill sauce with capers to serve with it on some crackers, I will have a grapes, smoked gouda, smoked almonds platter, I found a recipe for some smoked pecans and I am going to make some sugared walnuts and almonds and can't resist making a flourless chocolate cake (it was on the cover of Bon Appetit and it is called La Bete Noire "The Black Beast" and it is wonderful and will make some vanilla bean ice cream to go with it, so I am anxious to get started tomorrow and do as much prep work as I can, hope it all turns out and there will be a great chicken pecan salad donated by my sister in law and plenty of cherry limeade and margaritas for everyone.

July 4th picnic. I'm taking ... off, to Canada. Really, my BIL owns a cottage there, we have keys, but this is the first chance we've gotten to go. Maybe we'll get some poutine at the sports bar in Wallaceburg ... ;-)

For the first of July (I live in Ontario, Canada) We always go to the park for Suvlaki (sp?). It's devine and we only get it at that quality once a year.

Lunapiercook - Wallaceburg is in my neck of the woods(about a 30 minute drive)! I'm in Sarnia and if you want some really good fries drive to Sarnia and go under the bridge, we're famous if it! And I have heard of that sports bar, that is famous for their poutine. Enjoy it!

A Mexican-oid salad, with shredded romaine, black beans, corn, avocados, crumbled tortilla chips, and lime-cilantro dressing. Some cooked salmon might be good in there as well...

Spicy lamb kebabs and a blueberry-tart like thing - super-buttery, crumbly crust topped with baked blueberries, a small amount of streusel, and more fresh blueberries.

My summer fruit pie. It has a rich almond meal crust and is filled with fresh raspberries, blueberries, cherries and nectarines. Always a winner.

Lilartist - Being from the Flint area, Sarnia's a long-time stomping ground for me! David's cottage is on Walpole Island, so that's where we'll be till Friday. Oh, and trust me, Wallaceburg to Sarnia is at least an hour if you drive the St. Clair Pkwy along the east side of the river instead of using 40 or 31 ... ;-) The sports bar is the Crabby Joe's on 40, south of town. They have some serious eats there!

Crabby Joes is amazing, we have one in town and frequently go there for drinks and bar food! I don't think is has ever taken me a hour to get to Wallaceburg!! I know the side roads however....and that cuts back on timing, it's really not that far. Walpole Island has some nice cottages.

...the day off.

Seconding DaveFaris. We are going to grill ourselves some short ribs and call it a day, after an insanely busy June.

Hot Dogs. On the weekends we usually bbq up a storm and so for the holiday I thought we would take it easy and do nothing more strenuous then that.

It's pretty certain to rain here tomorrow, and if that's the case, I think most plans will be off. If the sun does come out, though, I'm baking a pie and making that potato salad Ed posted the other day.

I have been tasked to bring the tortilla roll-ups: cream cheese mixed with Hidden Valley Ranch salad dressing mixed, combined with minced black olives, pimentos and diced green onions. Spread on a tortilla, roll it up and then slice it into small bite size pieces. Not fancy, just good eats.
