Do you have weekly food traditions?
Or did you as a child? I'm thinking along the lines of 'Wednesday is Meatloaf Night!'

Wednesday is (Prince) Spaghetti Night for us. Last night, we were out of dried spaghetti so we broke out the pasta machine and cranked out fresh. Seriously good spaghetti...

As a child we always had tuna sandwiches, chips and a pickle and listened to Sky King, The Shadow, Nick Carter on the radio. My mother used Miriacle Whip and I thought I hated tuna sandwiches. I grew up and discovered Hellmann's. I love tuna sandwihes now : )

This happened accidentally a couple years ago: Thursday became tacos night - specifically, (crispy, melting-tender, juicy, insanely succulent and delicious) carnitas tacos with pickled red onions and cilantro. I fast during the day in preparation, and not only do I have plenty of room for them, but they taste even better.

Mexican Mondays. We find it hard to cook on Monday (since all of our energy went towards getting out of bed and going to work after the weekend), so we do Mexican Monday. It is usually the odds and ends of vegetables we still have in our fridge, beans, cheese, and whatever else looks good made in to a burrito.
(...and Fridays are take out fish tacos from the amazing taqueria in our neighborhood).

When I was a kid, every member of the family was responsible for cooking dinner one night a week. Which meant that nearly every Thursday we ate "daddy casserole"--baked beans and hamburger topped with pillsbury muffins and cheddar cheese...

Friday night is pizza and DVD movie night at our house. Sometimes we order pizza delivered, sometimes we make our own with a store bought crust, and sometimes we make our own dough for excellent grilled pizza. It all depends on our energy levels and what ingredients we've got when it's supper time.

Sunday is usually baby back ribs or smoked brisket and after so many sundays they have been made to perfection.

When I was a kid my Mother, rest her soul, fixed ring bologna and beans on saturday evenings. If there was any bologna left over my Father would fry it up with eggs the next morning before church. The saturday tradition in my house is something grilled outside regardless of time of year.or weather. Most often it's a 2" thick ribeye grilled medium rare. Standard sides are thick grilled Tuscan bread and sauteed brocolli, spinach or asparagus with olive oil and garlic. Please pass the cabernet!

My husband INSISTS on getting pizza AT LEAST one night a week, usually Mondays and/or Thursdays. YUK!!!

Friday nights at my house was chicken night. My dad still insists on chicken every Friday night. I'm glad to see other people have food nights!

When I was growing up, Friday evening was Shopping Night, which always included dinner at a restaurant. This also became the point at which I became acquainted with how excellent Greek-owned-and-operated family restaurants could be.
Mary and I try to eat at a restaurant at least once each week. Our more-important tradition, however, is our Coffee In Bed absolutely each and every morning. If it doesn't happen for whatever reason, the day just doesn't feel right for either of us.

Growing up Catholic in the 1950s-1960s, all Fridays were meatless. My mom would choose among fish sticks, tuna casserole or grilled salmon patties. Lunch was usually a PB&J packed in a metal lunchbox and served with a five-cent carton of milk. Many years later, fish sticks and "the blue box" macaroni and cheese served as many a quick-fix meal for the young children of a working mom -- and they loved it! These days, I prepare old-fashioned Sunday dinners -- my dad's favorite is something my mom used to fix on Sundays -- meat loaf and mashed potatoes with mushroom gravy, basic comfort food.

Sunday was always homemade fried chicken, mashed potatoes with cream gravy and a canned "green" of some kind.

Wow, I'm kind of surprised that no one's said this yet - every Sunday for as long as I can remember has been spaghetti (or some kind of pasta) and meatballs. When both of my grandparents were alive, it was usually more of a big deal, with salad, followed by pasta with tomato sauce and meatballs, followed by a meat and vegetable course. Either my cousins from Jersey would trek in to see us or we'd head out there. Now that it's just my family, Sunday dinner has become something less of a project, but it's still there every week. I've taken to cooking it at school sometimes, when I really miss it.

Growing up we had Pork chops on Mondays, Seafood on Fridays, Steak on Saturdays, and usually a ham or beef roast for Sunday lunch. My parents pretty much still stick to that line up even though it is just the two of them now. I grew up really hating steak due to having it every week exactly the same way...although my dad does grill a wonderful steak. (I love it now by the way).

Monday is bean day at our house - either pinto or white dried beans, coleslaw or fried potatoes with onion, and homemade cornbread. Friday is fish day, usually fried tilapia fillets with french fries and coleslaw. Saturday is cookout day. Either hot dogs, burgers, or ribeyes. Sunday is for things that take a while to prepare, like chicken and dumplings or beef roast.

When I was in high school every Thursday was taco day. And for pretty much my whole senior year every Wednesday my friend Carrie would come over and my mom would make dinner for the three of us. It was so fun, and my mom made some great meals!

As a unfortunately penniless part-time student and full time worker, I spend all day Sunday cooking my lunches for the week so that I not only save money during the week, but have something delicious, hot and healthy to eat while I shuttle between my 2 jobs, class and my internship.
My favourites include spaghetti and meatballs, korean spicy chicken stirfry (dak galbi), goat cheese and parma ham salads, or curries of one kind or another. Nevertheless, I cook ALL DAY sundays and pile tupperware on all kitchen surfaces.

When I was growing up, every Saturday night was "family night". My dad grilled a beef tenderloin and topped it with his top secret sauce (over the years we have tried unsuccessfully to copy it; butter, honey, dry mustard, cider vinegar, red pepper flakes, it was perfection!) and my sister and I helped Mom with the twice-baked potatoes, salad, and crispy french bread. We ate on tv trays in the den and watched The Honeymooners or some other show. My other favorite night of the week was Friday night, when my parents were out. Our babysitter had 13 kids of her own and always took a few "sips" of whatever was in my parents' bar. She was a huge wrestling fan (parents would have freaked) and we ate frozen waffles in front of the tv while Lois shouted at the wrestlers and mimicked their moves. She had a fantastic sense of humor and we all laugh about our Friday night antics!

Sunday was always "roast" day, beef, pork or veal. My mother told us that the veal was "pork" otherwise we wouldn't eat it...because pork was our favorite. Mashed potatoes, fresh green vegetables (when in season)...delicious. Saturday night in Winter was homemade Boston Baked Beans and baked ham...fabulous! Don't know why but in warmer weather Saturday dinner was just sandwiches..??

I don't observe the weekly habit, but when I was growing up, Tuesday was always fish day, because that was the day that Smitty, the fish man, came down our street with his truck! There was a vegetable truck, too, set up like a little grocery store, with a customer's scale and everything.
Lippy at 4:52PM on 07/25/07
Growing up, my mother would always make buttermilk biscuits from scratch on Sunday mornings. She'd always save a bit of uncooked dough for me and my sister, which I considered the best part of the meal.

When I'm back home in Singapore, mom's a housewife and always makes sure there's a glorious homecooked meal on the table for dinner. But Sunday morning's are "market day" with mom. We have brekkie at one of the many coffee shops or hawker centers (usually noodles: minced pork and fishballs (bak chor mee); vinegar-soused (lor mee); in a sweet potato gravy (mee rubus); etc.) then it's on to the hard work of carrying all her purchases as she goes around bargaining and selecting produce.

I try (most of the time) to put a pasta meal on the table on Sunday. Unless we are in a rut then I go for the roast something.
At least once a week I make a salad meal. A dinner salad with a meat or protein.
JerzeeTomato at 5:45AM on 07/26/07
every sunday in the winter my mom would make a "pot roast" an overcooked lump of stringy gray meat that had been cooked to death in the crockpot. the fall was great though, we'd pick apples every sunday afternoon, and then drive over to a tiny little store that sold "real vermont sharp cheese" this stuff was so strong it made you pucker! we'd get home and have apples and cheese and what they used to call common crackers. Probably the best meal ever! Now my husband and i have two nights a week usually monday and friday, that we do a meatless meal, either veggie soup with homemade bread or grilled vegetables and saffron rice.
