This question is tough. All the good meals that I have had involves eating a wide variety of dishes with a large goup of people. When I'm alone, I just eat whatever is available that suits my fancy. I did once go to a Japanese restaurant when I was at Lansing MI on business and had really nice dinners. It was so good that I went there almost every day for the entire trip. One meal included green tea, curry pork on rice, and shashimi deluxe. Thank goodness my company reimbursed me for food expenses.

Breakfast at the 5 Spot in Seattle.
It was the middle of December and I was freezing. I found the 5 Spot and figured I'd grab breakfast before I went downtown. Wow. It was the best breakfast I ever had at a restaurant. I think they served me a quarter-pound of hashbrowns, along with my eggs, bacon, pancakes and toast. I was stuffed like a tick when I left.

I have to admit I rarely dine out alone. If I am forced too I usually stick with fast food (how sad) First, because I feel very self-concious and I am a fast eater to start with so I am sure I can imagine what someone would think seeing me sitting there alone shoveling food in my mouth. Second eating is social for me and its about the whole dining experience. It's kind of like if a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it thing. If the food is wonderful and there is no one there to talk about it to............ So I guess I will have to go with "Sindy's Simple Eggs benedict". I had been working to perfect my recipe without so much butter and work of a traditional hollandaise sauce and I decided to add some fresh basil . MMM MMMM Basil!!

Definitely lunch at Chez Panisse! Best food I've had when dining solo, but I don't do that very often. On that occasion, I was visiting friends and spent the day alone in Berkeley while they went to work. That lunch, a stop at the Spanish Table, that great cheese store across from CP and a bunch of other 'sightseeing' made for a great day, though!

the best meal I ever had solo wasn't in a resteraunt. I went hiking one day and took some fresh bread and an apple with some awesome xtra sharp vermont cheddar. Between the fresh air, and the crunchy juicy apple, fresh bread and cheese, and great view, it was better than a meal in a five star resteraunt and alot cheaper.

Dinner at Michael Mina's in San Francisco. Was staying in the same hotel as the restaurant, was in town for the Fancy Foods Show and decided to treat myself. No one else wanted to go (read: spend that much). It was fantastic to just be able to focus on and savor the gorgeous food and wine with no distractions. My waiter was lovely and the kitchen sent a few extra goodies for the solo gal diner. :-)

I was alone in London, chaperoning college students for a week when they wanted to be on their own, without the faculty advisor. So I took myself to a number of highly rated London restaurants, both for lunch and dinner. The poshest was the Gordon Ramsay restaurant on Hospital Road. I couldn't even find the sign outside, so it's a good thing I knew the address. It was crowded, with press taking a few snapshots of a politico whom I didn't recognize. (It wasn't Tony Blair.) I had my first taste of short ribs and was blown away by the tiny box of chocolates they give you to take home. It was an altogether decadent experience, if a bit solitary. Rarely does anyone eat alone in London---esp. if you are a woman. At the end of the week I was proud of my many fine and memorable meals. (The Ivy was highly overrated! But I loved "Rules." The waiters reminded me of the Carnegie Deli!)

Dinner at the Parish Cafe in Boston. An upscale oyster Po' Boy with cucumber dill salad, a couple of fruity martinis, and heavenly white chocolate bread pudding with coffee for dessert, plus lovely service. It's one of those meals that reminds you that it's fun to do nice things for yourself.

I pretty much never dine out alone. But, one morning last semester I took myself out for breakfast. I had cheddar and apple crepes in an organic market cafe. It was delicious.

I frequently travel and dine alone., albeit it not necessarily by choice. Last May, as a birthday treat, I flew to NYC for a solo weekend of theater, shopping and eating out. It was nice not to worry if someone else was having a good time, and so I indulged in a serendipitous attitude toward mealtime. My favorite place was a small restaurant a few blocks from my small hotel where the food was mostly mediocre, but the people-watching was great! By the end of the weekend, the waiters knew I was a good tipper and an 'easy' customer, and treated me accordingly, which made for a short but sweet vacation.

Lunch at the Bar at Balthazar: Half bottle of Pol Roger, 6 kumamotos, Steak Tartare, Berry Tart and an Armangac. Great for my hangover.
Followed by Prix Fixe Lunch at the Bar at Davidburke and donatella, with two glasses of Paul Georg.

Dinner at the bar at Lupa. I didn't have to share my caponata.

Breakfast at Bouchon in Vegas. Great time, great food, great server and a tour of the amazing kitchen.
I am looking forward to my solo meal this month -- dinner at VICTORIA & ALBERT'S in Disney's Grand Floridian.

I eat alone fairly often, and most of my favorite solitary meals happen at home, late at night, when I can hear the 11:30 train crossing the tracks far off. They're usually really simple-- fresh pasta with butter and vegetables, et cetera, or just some fresh bread and butter-- but I enjoy them all the more for it!
