Best Foodie Town Between the Coasts?

Heading West to SF by car and willing to make a major detour for a couple days of great meals.

Seems like KC should be high on the list, for Bluestem and also for KC's more traditional culinary treasures. I'm a fan of Bryant's and Gates for BBQ, Lamar's for doughnuts and Hereford House for steak. Calvin Trillin had this one nailed years ago.

I was born and raised in Detroit, and besides my family, the food is what I miss the most - Evie's Tamales, Kowalski kielbasa and other delicious Polish food in Hamtramck, the Mongolian Barbecue in Royal Oak, and of course the almighty Coney. I have yet to find Greek or Middle Eastern food as good as the stuff I got back home. And I'm sorry, but while local corn is great, it pales in comparison to Michigan sweet corn. :)

I second Jennifer's entry. I also grew up in Michigan and go back from Berkeley, CA to visit home every summer. Great food served humbly with a friendly smile. And yes, you must try the corn. Lots and lots of corn!

WOW! Go Michigan! There are some greats around here like Andiamos.
However, I would have to say Chicago. I've never gained more weight in any other city. Tapas at Cafe Babareeba, Pizza at Connie's and so many more make this my favorite town in which to gorge.

You must go to Denver / Ft. Collins, there is an AMAZING wealth of delicious restaurants there...
