What's your favorite ice cream or sorbet flavor? Topping?
I usually end up purchasing Luigi's delicious pina colada flavored italian ices or Haagen-Dazs's raspberry sorbet / yogurt bars. If It was calorie-free, I would order a coffee ice cream from Haagen-Dazs and pour rainbow sprinkles all over it. Describe your favorite ice cream, I want to know!

Ben & Jerry's Strawberries and Cream, topped with chopped strawberries, macerated with a bit of brown sugar.

My favorite ice cream flavor is coffee, and I'm very fond of Stonyfield Farms' Javalanche, which combines an excellent coffee flavor with a creamy and satisfying mouth feel. I'm also fond of the Almond Cookie flavor at Chinatown Ice Cream Factory, which now features a Durain ice cream, for those in a perverse state of mind.

Toppings have to be the classics: chocolate syrup and whipped cream. Sometimes I add a banana, and if I'm into it, I fry the banana in some butter, sugar, and coffee liqueur, and pour that over the ice cream. I also love making malts.

Wow, GorillaBob really likes coffee ice cream!
My favorite (when I can actually get it) is Double Rainbow Marion blackberry sorbet and my favorite topping with that is a shot glass of un-whipped whipping cream poured over. OMG, is that good!
Close second, French vanilla Breyer's with a sliced banana, a tablespoon of strawberry topping and a tablespoon of Hershey's syrup. Only one thing that might make that any better, and that is a ring of oven carmelized pineapple under the scoop of ice cream. Sort of a deconstructed classic banana split.
*faints*

I never met an ice cream flavor I didn't like! However,my alltime favorite is a hot fudge sundae, with wet walnuts, vanilla ice cream(soft serve), whipped cream, and a cherry on top from Carvel. I haven't had one recently, but the image, and taste live vividly in my mind.

my favorite flavor is caramel. but i only had one once that was any good... since then, i've been let down by all the store bought "dulce de leche" variations that are nothing like the caramel ice cream i once had in france. this weekend i made david lebovitz' salted butter caramel ice cream, and it's pretty great. next time i'll just make plain caramel and i'll be in heaven.
but i wouldnt turn down any flavor of ice cream. love me some ice cream!

I forgot to mention plain, as well as the amazing Grape-Nut, probably because they are only (to my knowledge) available in Maine.

Mint carob chip Rice Dream or Orange Swirl Rice Dream -- both with unsweetened carob chips sprinkled on top.
hereandthe at 10:34AM on 06/05/07
Carob!? Feh. I don't do carob. But to each their own, taste wise.
Haagan Daz makes a chocolate sorbet that tastes like a fudgical on steroids. It is fabulous and low cal if you are tipping the scales.
I also like their dulce de leche ice cream. There used to be an icecream company in northwestern CT called Stoshe's that made amazing black rasberry ice cream.
If I wanted stoner icecream (rich, cloying, overly sweet) I would pick ben and jerry's cherry garcia. It is the mellowist of their flavors. They used to have a flavor I loved called rule brittania - strawberry with chocolate covered shortbread pieces - but it got discontinued. Too understated for stoner ice cream I guess.

Mich23; what are these wet walnuts of which you speak? Are they dipped in some sort of beverage? Perhaps a syrup? My curiosity is amounting-I must know!
As for my ice cream preference, I've got my favorite, which is a shame because I rarely venture beyond it. I love Death by Chocolate's Praline Gelato (I know, it's a chain store.) with a soft matte caramel syrup, toasted walnuts still warm, and chunks of sugar cookie dough. Sometimes, if I have it, I mix in a good tablespoon of microwaved peanut butter.

Cherry Garcia is my all time favorite, followed closely by Haggen-Dazs Coffee. Boring I know, but oh so yummy.

I love mint chocolate chip, and I love marzipan ice cream with bittersweet chocolate chips in (it needs to be really dark chocolate to cut through the sweetness of the marzipan).
I've also been having a weird cornetto craving recently (don't know if they have cornettos in the States, but they're the sort of cheapy produced, mass market ice cream cone that you'd buy from a van). I think the craving is related to a dream I had a few weeks ago, in which I was walking along a boardwalk arcade and bought some ice cream, but never got a chance to eat it. The ice cream in the dream was sort of cheap vanilla with brittle chocolate swirls running through, a bit like a cornetto.

I'm with GorillaBob, I love coffee-flavored ice creams as well. But the benchmark in coffee ice cream that can be widely purchased without a doubt has to be Haagen-Daz's -- no other commercial producer makes one that even comes close.
I'd also say that Haagen-Daz probably produces the best Strawberry flavor, and I can't get enough of their new limited run Cinnamon Dulce de Leche. Their mayan chocolate kicks ass, although the Amazon Valley Reserve they recently put out is also very good, however it is not yet avaliable everywhere:

Ben and Jerry's in my opinion hasnt come out with a good flavor in years, and I dont think they are using as premium ingredients for the mix-in stuff as they used to. I've been known to buy a pint of Cherry Garcia occasionally, however.

Haagen- Dazs Strawberry Shortcake (Limited edition), Mayan Chocolate, Pineapple Coconut.
Ben & Jerry's Smores Galore & Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie.
Graeters Coconut Almond Fudge
Baskin Robbins Pralines & Cream...love all that caramel
The only time I use a topping is when I have plain chocolate or vanilla ice cream. I love to top it with toasted coconut that I make at home.

The best ice-cream in the world is from The Scoop in Fairfax, California. They make their ice cream and cones fresh daily with local and organic ingredients, and have the most amazing flavors. My all-time favorites have been banana walnut, mexican chocolate, and vanilla-honey-lavender. A close second would have to be Straus' Vanilla Soft Serve drizzled with olive oil and sea salt. Believe me, don't knock it 'til you try it.

Pralines & Cream is another favorite of mine! Mmm Caramel and Chewy Pralines!
Icecream Sandwiches too!
Fat-free Fudgsicles are what i eat nowadays
Pineapple or Cherry Sorbet

-caramel ice cream at the original berthillon in paris (ile saint louis).
-black raspberry at kimball farms in jaffrey, nh (another location in MA).
-mint chocolate chip at the franklin fountain in philly
***i've yet to find an ice cream/gelato in nyc that i am mad for. though i have been gunning to try otto's olive oil gelato! i do like ben and jerry's chocolate fudge brownie out of the carton though!***

Coffee Heath-Bar Crunch and good old fashioned vanilla. A good vanilla ice cream, free of candy gew-gaws and other dessert bric-a-brac, is truly heavenly.

I find Haagen-dazs' ice cream to be too much; too rich, too sweet but oh lord their raspberry sorbet is heavenly. I eat it naked, in the middle of sunny summer afternoon.
Wait, I mean the sorbet is the naked one with no topping, not me..
winny at 11:00PM on 06/05/07
Red bean ice cream is amazing! Vanilla soft serve with M&Ms is also yummy. For a low fat alternative, weight watchers makes a delicious chocolate sundae cone that is out of this world.

michichan: Wet walnuts are simply walnuts soaked in maple syrup. You can buy them bottled, or make them yourself with any nut you like.
Mich23 at 7:09AM on 06/06/07
Mint chocolate chip or mango sorbet, no topping needed.
