Question of the Day: What was in your last "care package"?

Care packages are a great way to say "hey, I'm thinking about you today". Do you send (or receive) gift packages of food to (or from) family or friends? Homemade stuff? Speciality foods not available to the other person? Homemade cookies were always my favorite.

Bialies to my parents, who are now living in Florida. FedExed from Kossar's, for birthdays, Easter, Christmas, Father's Day, Mother's Day, Arbor Day...they eat more bialies than I do!

I'm in the UK, so I'll get sent things every now and then. Our last care package had peppermint patties, Hershey Kisses and some Char-Val peanut butter eggs for Easter. Char-Val is a small local candy maker - only open for the holidays - and one of the lovely foodie things I miss from back home.

When I send packages to my nieces and nephews, I always try to include hobnobs and jaffa cakes.

Our part of a recent care package to a soldier friend in Afghanastan was some spice mixes from Alden Mill House, and a couple bottles of Joe Perry's hot sauces.

I usually send special candies and such to my sister's kids every couple of months. I found some giant lollipops that were the size of softballs (attached to thin pvc pipe "sticks..." Think "medieval mace.") I usually toss in stuff for their mom and dad and their dogs. Chocolate for Mom, gummy rats or spiders for Dad. That sort of thing.

I've sent a handful of care packages to my boyfriend who's away at grad school. I'll send him mail that still comes to my apartment along with a bunch of protein bars. I also sent him a batch of Nell Newman's Espresso Brownies (best brownies ever), and blueberry muffins from Tofu 1-2-3 which unfortunately I undercooked and were nasty by the time they reached him. Oh, and one other care package was full of chocolate I got at the Hershey Store in Times Square. Love that place!

A good friend of mine moved to Paris last fall...I've sent her two packages, they included (not in any order here): Hershey's Caramel kisses, huge Costco sized peanut butters, Rolo's, the Willy Wonka Halloween candy pack, Jo-Jo's cookies from Trader Joe's, and a whole crap load of Girl Scout Cookies. :-)

I just got a package from her last week - a large box of mixed Toblerone's, some Pim's cookies, a bar of Lindt dark chocolate with caramel, some gum (which I have not tried yet) and a bag of some sort of candy, which I also have not tried yet.

Clearly, we are not into trading any, um, gourmet food. :-)

Funny this question came up. My sister is out in BC and I am in Ontario. She often gets homesick for the cooking we do here. So I am planning on sending her and her little ones a care package filled with my famous chocolate chip cookies, homeade suckers, whatever I have a chance to bake for her. It should cheer her up!

We send big boxes of fresh bakery bread and rolls to my in-laws in Salt Lake City. Very hard to get good baked goods up there in the higher elevations. They're at about 6500 ft or so, so a good pizza is rare as well.

We also send them Taylor Pork Roll, since they don't have that there either.

Back when I was in college, my mom used to send me a shoe box each week with the Sunday comics, a box of Pop Tarts, dried fruit and a little cash. Every now and then, there would be some other great treat, but it meant the world to me that she did that.

I give care packages every week to someone. It could be crumb cake, brownies, or other home made baked goods, sent to work with my husband (so this way I don't eat them). I give leftover barbecue food to my son and his family -ribs, beans, etc. I also give baked goods to the people who work in the apt. building I live in. This week my care package which I gave to family and friend ,had homemade, healthy, bran muffins.

For my birthday, Mom sent me a double batch of her homemade raspberry bars made with a ton of butter, white-chocolate chips, raspberry jam and almonds. They are to die for!

I've gotten a few care packages filled with cookies and such around final exams and as any college student will tell you, they're quite appreciated!

I just sent a friends for his birthday a box of assorted Elmer's Chee-Weez. They are the original cheetoes made here in New Orleans. They come in green onion, BBQ, hot, and regular. They are truely a special treat that people that live here appreciate.

It may sound odd, but syrup. I send a bottle of cane syrup to a friend of mine in California (I'm in Georgia) every few months. He looooves it, and my extended family makes it so it's real easy to send.

I get copious amounts of Biscotti from my Mum -- last batch was chai pistachio apricot. Heavenly!

When I'm the giver, it's usually a cadre of goodies from Trader Joe's...

A friend in Switzerland used to send me high end espresso beans, chocolates, and this malted candy. My frend in the midwest sometimes sends me Bratwurst from Usinger's, and Canadian Bacon and Summer sausage from Nueske's. Also, before he died, a guy my mother worked with retired to a farm in Vermont, and he used to send us first fun maple syrup. I miss that stuff!

A chef pal was on the west coast for about 6 months, and complaining non-stop about the lack of 'real' (read: NYC-centric) food out there. In the course of one of these conversations, he mentioned that even though it's not high-end, the last food he'd like to eat before he goes is chocolate Italian ice. A few days later, after about an hour on line and making calls, and finally found a distributor based in the Bay area. The guy was great, and he personally delivered the 5-gallon tub to the restaurant. It was well-received, to say the least!

My friend sent me a french press coffee maker, coffee, and some biscuits. I was having a bad day and she figured no matter what else was thrown at me, I could probably use some more caffeine. Which is so, so true.

Then there was the care package the same friend's mother gave me when I visited her last. A bunch of spring rolls, cellophane noodles, and a jar of this red pepper paste/sauce. The car smelled like sesame oil the whole way home from Boston, it was fantastic.

the last care pkg I sent to a dear friend was my "special" cappacino marshmello krisp treats, about 2 dozen assorted homemade lillipops and some homemade filled chocolates, as well as a shrek pez dispenser and a HUGE bag (2 lbs) of chocolate kisses. For christmas, since he doesnt like cookies I made about 15lbs of assorted homemade nut brittle.
