Question of the Day: What are you ashamed to admit you use?

With all this talk about what we do like...and what we don't like....I'm curious....what ingredient or foods do you use, that you might not like to admit to the world?
Personally I always keep dehydrated onions on hand....I use them in the middle of burgers sometimes...or to add a bit of onion to different things. I hate to admit it, but sometimes I rehydrate them, and put them on food ala McDonalds!
What's your skeleton in the closet?

a bottle of cinnamon-sugar from the eighties that i sprinkle on bananas.

Bisquick - I can't make a biscuit to save my life ... dozens of my Southern ancestors just whirl in their graves each time I measure out a cup of the stuff.

Various kinds of bouillon mix, vegetarian or fish, some of it loaded with MSG. (I don't have enough room in my freezer for stock to make risotto.)

Instead of using fresh garlic all the time, I do dip into my jar of Trader Joe's organic chopped garlic. Same thing with ginger.

I'm also guilty of using dehydrated onions and pre-chopped garlic.
I also sometimes use the lemon and lime juice in the plastic fruit-shaped containers in the produce section.

Instant mashed potatoes.

Sometimes, I actually make boxed macaroni & cheese.

I'm not quite ashamed of this, but I do use a lot of Goya's Adobo with Pepper on my beef, pork, and chicken. I first had it 17 years ago in college and got addicted.

I sometimes buy garlic/ginger paste at my local Bangladeshi shop. A lot of the Indian bloggers that I read use it, and I'm constantly running out of garlic and ginger, so it's nice to have a back-up. Plus, I do sometimes use stock powder or sometimes condensed stock. It's difficult to find fresh stock in Britain, and I don't always have time or inclination to make my own.

Paper plates. For draining, for flouring, for battering.

Occasionally, I use/cook with mayonnaise, pre-shredded cheeses, and marshmallows. Not together.

I used to use canned bisquits, but I was so embarrased that I had to try making my own, btw Tyler Florence has a great easy recipe for them.
My big secret now is i still use canned croissants for my proscuitto rolls(blushing furiously) but in my defense the real thing is just too much work and takes up too much space in my tiny kitchen.

Frozen veggies, boxed mac & cheese, pre-shreaded parm (no, not kraft, I won't go that low) and bulk size extra virgin olive oil from costco.

Store bought chicken stock. God knows I eat enough chicken, throw away enough bones/meat, that I could easily make my own, but sadly, I do not.

Hey, don't knock the Trader Joe's garlic powder! It's really, really good for garlic powder.

I sometimes eat ramen without cooking it. It's crunchy.

There is no shame in my kitchen. If I use a store-bought product out of convenience, I won't hide (or play up) the issue.

Brown Minute Rice because regular brown rice takes too damn long to cook and I'm lazy and impatient.

Are frozen veggies a bad thing??

Im with DaveFaris.

Cavender's greek seasoning when I cook salmon. It is full of MSG but sooo good.

Bisquick as well....the baker hubbin can't stand that I use it...but I love it

What? No Hamburger Helpers out there willing to come out of the closet?

... I also think that food shouldn't be so serious that one cannot enjoy a hot Grands biscut , Bisquick pancakes, or Kraft Mac and cheese (with frozen peas mixed in) without feeling ashamed..

I agree with DaveFaris. That said, I'm still ashamed to admit I sometimes use Velveeta. One of my most favorite shameful treats is hominy'n'cheese (similar to mac'n'cheese), made of course with Velveeta.

And I don't see anything wrong with good-quality frozen vegetables (especially those that are hard to come by fresh) or store-bought stock in cartons (as long as it isn't Swanson's... bleck). I do, however, draw the line at Hamburger Helper!!!

Roland's garlic chili sauce. It's SO high in sodium, but I make Chinese Restaurant broccoli with it. Such a guilty pleasure.

Roland's garlic chili sauce. It has ridiculous amounts of sodium, but I use it to make Chinese Restaurant broccoli. Great guilty pleasure.

I have to throw in my support for the Bisquick users... there's no reason to be ashamed!

I am not currently ashamed of any of the cheats that I use, because I am just starting out. I am trying to ween myself off of storebought, boxed, canned, powdered, and frozen everything. In fact, I just planted my first herb garden and I am very excited.

p.s Aunt Jone...I don't think frozen veggies are a bad thing. I live in Michigan and it is hard to get fresh veggies all of the time. Plus I have read that frozen veggies are healthier than the shipped in ones because they are frozen at the peak of their freshness.

p.s.s. I must admit that I use a lot of cheats. I do use hamburger helper, boxed mac n cheese etc. In fact the only time that my boyfriend and I cook "real" food is on the weekends. I must use the excuse the we are soooo busy all week. However, it is summer and I am taking it off from school, so I will do A LOT of cooking. I am sooo excited.

I buy a box of those premade Jimmy Dean Sausage Egg and Cheese Biscuits every week, and I eat one for breakfast every day. I also use instant grits, frozen yeast rolls, and boxed mac and cheese.

Sometimes I eat Campbell's condensed Tomato Soup. But its so comforting.

Newfoodie, availability of local fresh veggies here in Michigan can certainly be a crapshoot, particularly in winter. To me, frozen veggies never taste as good as their fresh counterparts. I'd rather buy fresh Washington asparagus than the frozen stuff if Michigan asparagus, or even Ontario-grown, isn't available. Unfortunately, that "frozen at their peak of freshness" line is nothing more that a marketing slogan when it comes to real flavor.

Make sure to check out the Michigan Foodways site when you get a chance. There's some great info there regarding locally-grown foods.

Oyster Sauce (High in Sugar, MSG, Sodium)
Ketchup (High Fructose Corn Syrup)
White Vinegar (for cooking and salads)
I use cold tap water to cool my veggies after cooking them

I always feel rather ashamed when I order out...And there's a bag of potstickers in my freezer that are rather high in sodium and fat and are not in any way organic, but I love them so.

Miracle Whip.

there is no shame in my kitchen!

mrs. dash -- my mom was a salt-o-phobe when we were younger, and i got addicted to the stuff. i put it on vegetables and tofu.

In a pinch...jarred roasted red peppers, pesto, roasted tomatoes...all Trader Joe's. That place saves my a$$!

Boxed mac n cheese is my guilty pleasure - I think it tastes better than homemade! And I, too, have a large jar of pre-minced garlic in the referigerator. And maybe some Rice-a-Roni in the pantry...

Kraft Mac & cheese here, too! Except I add a dash of paprika, a grind of black pepper and a pinch of red curry to it! That w/ sauted, garlicky cube steaks is my hub's favorite meal.
