tips on becoming a meat eater again with out painful problems??

I have been a pseudo vegetarian for about 20 years due to gall stones. I have been able to eat fowl and fish and dairy, but no red meat or pork.. I have heard that going back to meat eating can cause problems like cramping, stomach aches ect. I would be very interested in tips and advice from people who have made the switch after an extended period of time.
Thanks ever so much

I would eat small portions in the beginning, gradually building up to regular portions if you don't experience any discomforts. Stick to lean red meats/pork. I wouldn't go crazy with something like pork butt for your very first meal, maybe pork loin.

Also, drink plenty of water when you decide to reincorporate the red meat, it will help with the digestion process.

I am a vegetarian, but I recently did eat pastured pork, including guanciale which is very fatty. I didn't have a problem at all. I think that if you have a healthy vegetarian diet with varied protein sources you should be fine. I bet that if you eat slowly and not too much, you'll do fine with most meats, especially given that your body is used to some animal protein.

I was a vegetarian for eight years, and started eating meat and fish again this January. I had no problems at all.

The quality of food that you eat has a direct impact on how healthy you are. My advice would be to make sure that you eat high quality organic meats with the least amount of curing and processing.

Carosone has some good advice, start off with small portions of meat initially.

Also, you would be wise to keep an eye on your sources of protein. As a vegetarian you will be used to getting protein from somewhere other than meat or fish. Just be sure to reduce the non-meat proteins when you switch back to eating meat. You wouldn't want to put your health at risk by gaining weight.

I was vegan, and as I introduced animal-based products back into my diet I had no issues at all, and I thought I would. My advice is to take baby steps until you know your body can handle it. I am thinking that you'll be fine, especially since you have been taking meat of some form.

I didn't eat any meat other than fish for 15 years, when I decided to begin eating meat again I didn't have any problems at all. I agree that if you have a balanced diet you should be able to process any type of protien with out any issues. I also believe that when people get "sick" from eating meat for the first time or "by accident" it COMPLETELY mental.

And might I add that I am so incredibly glad that I decided to introduce meat back into my diet. Not only am I happier, so are my friends and family that always felt that they had to cater to me.
