Question of the Day: Snap! We love crisp food.
According to a Chicago Tribune article, we love things that go crunch in the bite. Crisp foods promise freshness. Both food companies & chef's know this. Think croutons on a crisp salad, extra crispy fried chicken, that first potato chip out of new bag, creme brulee's crisp sugar crust & even some wines are considered "crisp". I enjoy Honeycrisp apples in the Fall & the snap of a good, dark chocolate bar anytime. What crisp, crunchy foods do you seek out?

Funny, my favorite word in the english language (since childhood) is 'crisp' ... I can not explain it.
Anyway, my fave crisp foods: celery, good pickles, Macoun apples, chocolate covered pretzels.

So funny that you posted this. Just last night we were discussing my weird love of crunchy things - the louder the better. In my favorite crunchy foods categories - Granny Smith apples, Japanese rice crackers, croutons in salad, and fried chicken for sure. Also cucumbers, any manner of chips... I am getting hungry just thinking about this.

Nothing worse than a grainy apple. On the other hand, a crisp peach is no good!

pickles, a cold apple (has to be chilled), and this jicama slaw that my husband makes that has chayote in it. the chayote keeps it really crisp, although not bringing any flavor or nutritional value whatsoever to the dish.
not food related, but i like crisp clean autumn air first thing in the morning.

Yep, am addicted to crunchy bites too. I always go for ice creams with crunchy fillings like cookies, chocolate chips instead of plain soft ones. It's the oral fixation in me, I suppose

I confess to a weakness for corn chips, but the best crispy thing I've eaten recently was at Gordon Ramsay's Maze. The pork belly comes with a piece of fried skin, like the best pork rind I've ever eaten. Delightful.

green beans and sugar snap peas that are a little crisp, carrots, pickles.

Refrigerated crackers, especially the "pre-stuffed" ones. I currently keep a box of sour cream and chive Captain's Wafers in my fridge at work, and have replenished it for at least two months now.
And of course, frozen Hershey dark chocolate bars, washed down with ice-cold whole milk.

I love putting potato chips in my sandwiches just for the crunchiness effect. Mmmmmmm.

Martin's Kettle Cook'd potato chips. Best crunch ever!

@GorillaBob - ditto on the fried skin! My Grandmother will skin a chicken for frying, but instead of skinning it for healthy purposes she opts for flavor - she'll bread and fry the skin by itself!
Crispy, salty, just a bit greasy ... imagine that wonderful chicken skin taste when you bite a chicken leg, but in a little nugget of concentrated flavor ...
And thankfully, as our family grows over the years with marriages and children and boyfriends/girlfriends, she's had to up her chicken count to three to feed everyone - which means more crispy fried skin!

Trader Joe's sells these tiny round rice crackers that have the most satisfying crunch. I also love crunchy peanut butter; popcorn; Santitas white corn chips; pretzel nuggets; carrots; and probably my favorite, well-done french fries (not burned, but crunchy).

Fried shallots on top of Vietnamese dishes.
Chili cheese Fritos.
I had some fried anchovies at a local tapas bar with romesco what were great, head and all.
Also, house-made bacon, shallot tater tots at another local restaurant - sort of like mini-croquettes, creamy potato on the inside, crisp panko on the outside.

in the fall when i roast brussel sprouts i love the crispy slightly burned pieces that fall off during the cooking process, possibly more than the sprouts themselves.

Any of the "water core" apples have that crisp.....love it. Dark chocolate bars, have to be thinnish and cold so they snap. A pickle is not a pickle unless it snaps....I've truly not had a good pickle in eons, since Corky and Lenny's deli in Shaker Hts, Ohio........oh my CRUNCH. Don Poncho corn chips also have a major crisp. All crispy veggies are good too. I don't "do" most snack foods, but I remember potato chips as major crisp noises, too bad they are so evil.... My current fave crisp are wasabi peas, out of a tall can, from the evil Safeway.....little dried out peas coated with wasabi.........crunch wow, crunch wow, crunch wow.

Sugar snap peas, raw. And eating them makes me feel good 'cause they're healthy.
amyscoop at 10:00PM on 06/23/07
crisp, raw carrots

NanaJoie at 10:24AM on 06/24/07
Wasa bread, carrots, cucumber when it's really cold from the fridge, Nairns oat cakes, especially the one with fruit in that are almost like a proper biscuit.

Those crunchy little cookie bits in the middle of Carvel ice cream cakes. Also, potato chips, KitKat bars (but I love them melty too), roasted almonds, and good 'ole buttered toast.

I love this question! For me - steamed string beans or broccoli, vegetable and shrimp tempura, Lay's plain potato chips, Tostitos bite-sized corn chips w/ salsa, fried wasabi peas, french fries, crispy bacon, fuji apples, cheetos. . . There are probably others, but I can't think of them at the moment.

i really like the crispy rice at the bottom of one of those really hot stone bowls you get at korean restaurants. after a tasty meal, i use my spoon to break it up and eat it like chips.
