Restaurants in DC - Dupont Circle?

Serious Eaters in the DC area, be aware! Starting late next week, about 20,000 librarians will be descending on your city in search of good food and good times. This particular librarian would be very grateful for any restaurant recommendations you could provide, particularly in the Dupont Circle area. And do you know of any good Ethiopian places? That's one cuisine I've never tried. Thanks so much!

As far as Dupont is concerned, I have heard Teaism is good.... I would stay away from Luna Grill. If you don't mind Metro-ing it a bit, I can give you a great Ethiopian place..... it is called Etete... in the U street corridor... incredible food, great service, great prices, and the honey wine is house made and to die for... other restaurants worth the Metro ride for are Indique, great modern Indian located conveniently near the Zoo...of course I would also be remiss if I did not mentio Jose Anres's restaurants, Jaleo, Cafe Atlantico, and Oyamel... all wonderful and in the heart of downtown...
if you find yourself in Georgetown, make your way to Dolcezza on Wisconsin... best gelato in the city... hope that helps!

Wow, that helps a lot! Thanks.

20,000 Librarians?? Here?? WOW!

I need a good book ;>)

Welcome librarians!

For the best bargain in excellent Ethiopian food, try Dukem in the U Street area. They also have a nice outdoor area. Closer to the Dupont area, try Pesce or Pizzeria Paradiso on P St., or Bistrot du Coin on Connecticut.

VioletHeather, what don't you like about Luna Grill? I agree it's not innovative/gourmet, but it's a good place for diverse groups of people because of its wide, veg friendly menu, and good bargains like pasta specials.

My family is in the DC area, so I have a few favorites; if they're not at/near Dupont, they're very easy Metro rides--and will get you away from the swarms of librarians (if that's of interest).
Palena has the best roasted chicken you can get--for about $12. And the restaurant is AT a Metro stop.
Cafe Atlantico has the best mojitos...Thaiphoon has fabulous (fresh) mango daquiris...
Central (Michel Richard's bistro) is fun, noisy and very casual, but you'll spend $$ for entrees. The apps are reasonably priced, though; don't miss the gougieres or the brussels sprouts if you go.
You might also look at Tom Sietsema's recommendations in the Washington Post dining section...

I have had several bad experiences there with becoming ill after eating... and I have an iron stomach and wild culinary habits.... so out of curiosity I checked their rating with the health department, and it was atrocious... great sweet potato fries, but i have been sickened by their burgers and chicken... just my .02 :)

Library Lady, I have family attending that conference as well - have a great time! I was born and raised in the DC metro area, and my friends and I regularly followed the Washingtonian magazine's Cheap Eats guides. The 2007 guide has just been released, so if you see a copy when you get to the area, pick one up! It lists the 100 best, cheap restaurants in the area. I found many of my old favorites that way!

One of the best ways to get reliable recommendations from members of a local "foodie" group is to join www.donrockwell.com The founder writes excellent reviews for one of the local PBS stations and has attracted an enthusiastic crowd who keep one another up to date and are always willing to offer what are sometimes conflicting opinons, nonetheless. There is a comprehensive restaurant guide accessible to members only. You can easily check out the usefulness of the web site by browsing through the posts on various individual restaurants.

Ohhhhh my goodness. I was in D.C. a few summers ago, and went to an Italian restaurant that wasn't too far from Dupont Circle. I had an AMAZING cheese ravioli dish with a most wonderful creamy tomato sauce. I remember licking my plate clean. Does anyone happen to know which restaurant I am talking about? Little place, a bit of a hole in the wall, but some of the best Italian I've had in my life. It would be great if anyone could help me out on this.

And as for the librarians, I think you would enjoy this place, too.

I was in DC last summer and if you want to experience a really Washingtonian atmosphere, go to the institution that is The Old Ebbitt Grill (details on www.ebbitt.com). It is fantastic anytime, and weekend brunch is especially great. Don't miss it!

I was in Dupont this year at Eastertime. For great Thai food and a fun atmosphere try Thaiphoon. It's next to Ruth's Chris steak house off of Connecticut Ave. Hank's Oyster House was great for brunch.

lauriol plaza is fun & yummy. ameri-mexican place. Delicious margaritas!!

Washington DC has an excellent food discussion web site, run by the former eGullet Washington DC forum host, Don Rockwell:

I'm sure you'll get tons of great suggestions there.
