Even though I live in Land O' Tim Hortons, I have had maybe the equivalent of three donuts in the last two years.
But back in the day, I lived in Dunkin Donuts heaven, and when I was a kid, the marble crullers were unbelievably delicious, plenty of glaze, crusty fresh goodness. Those are my ultimate donut, too bad they don't exist anymore.

I'll only say this once ... I agree with ThatGirl153. ;-) Crullers rule!
LunaPierCook at 11:48AM on 06/01/07
Jelly.
I also really like the Russian/Ukranian style ones stuffed with prune butter.
And Cafe du Monde Beignets from New Orleans.

I love buttermilk, but if there is an apple fritter up for grabs I'll go for that.
Carosone at 12:19PM on 06/01/07
Same as my favorite cocktail: old-fashioned
Marvin at 12:55PM on 06/01/07
anything with apple
nelson5757 at 1:31PM on 06/01/07
WHAT THA HECK?!! What do you mean, 'they don't exist anymore???'
I can get'em down here in the South!
I love the crullers, and the orginal glazed...BUT ONLY FROM KRISPY KREME, and only when the light is on in the window!

Apple fritter!
homesicktexan at 1:56PM on 06/01/07
plain cruller, but I'm not sure I love them as much as thatgirl. :-)
Lou at 2:02PM on 06/01/07
old fashioned, glazed and krispy kreme's iced filled with raspberry
spaghetti at 2:10PM on 06/01/07
I'm not going to get into my feelings about Krispy Kreme, but I will say that their crullers are nothing like the ones I was talking about. Dunkin Donuts doesn't make that kind anymore (chocolate and plain twisted together), at least I haven't seen them in a decade or more - that's what I meant about not existing.
wellred at 2:14PM on 06/01/07
wellred....does anyone actually go to Timmy Ho's for the doughnuts? I'm addicted to their coffee myself!
I'm impartial to glazed or peanut doughnuts...there used to be a place here in Buffalo called Freddie's Donuts....they had the absolute best doughnuts in the world!
Anyone make their own doughnuts....have a great recipe you're willing to share?
mepolo at 2:34PM on 06/01/07
Doughnut Plant in NYC- Coconut filled, and raspberry also. Glazed from Krispy Kreme and a Boston cream doughnut anywhere I can find it.
Mich23 at 3:09PM on 06/01/07
hey! i meant to only say that once! but.....I really do love them!
ThatGirl153 at 3:17PM on 06/01/07
Honestly, I don't know why people go to Tim Horton's - I can't drink coffee very often, it's so so sad. But all the locations I see are always full.
wellred at 4:54PM on 06/01/07
Thanks for the memories. Growing up my grandpa was the donut man at a local gas station. All the donuts were made fresh on site every night. I spent many graveyard shifts with him in the back whipping up all kinds. The best was a plain cake donut fresh out of the grease and way too hot to eat. God I miss him and those donuts
kerque at 5:19PM on 06/01/07
Crullers--the Brooklyn kind, all moist and eggy in the middle, with vanilla icing.
BaHa at 5:35PM on 06/01/07
Sourcream glazed old fashioned for me... mmmm... now I'm craving one.
Alm25 at 5:37PM on 06/01/07
ThatGirl153, obviously you really truly greatly love them!
Mepolo and wellred, while I like Tim Horton's doughnuts myself, other people's tastes are simply other people's tastes. I have a 17-year-old stepson who looked at his brother and I the other day and simply said, "I can't understand what the big deal is about steak". So ... well, there it is.
LunaPierCook at 5:37PM on 06/01/07
Usually sour cream glazed, sometimes crullers, once in a great while cream and alway raspberry filled.
My husband can eat raised glazed like they are potato chips.

old-fashioned buttermilk were my favorite 40 years ago but have not had a doughnut since
JEP at 7:24PM on 06/01/07
Chocolate old-fashioned or black sesame pon de ring (donut filled with black sesame paste, with sesames sprinkled on top - it's really good). Sour cream glazed sounds nice, too.
pluot at 9:03PM on 06/01/07
I have never heard of Tim Hortons...I have a feeling they do not exist in Texas! Where are they?
My favorite is in Abilene, TX at Snow White Bakery. They glaze them and then put chocolate frosting on top. We've since moved but it was our Saturday morning treat about once a month!
Lauren at 10:24PM on 06/01/07
Lauren, TH's started up in Canada in 1964 and, as they apparently only started opening stores in the US in 1995 when they merged with Wendy's, they're still only as far south as WV and KY. Their history can be found here.
LunaPierCook at 7:09AM on 06/02/07
bavarian cream-filled topped with the glue-like chocolate sauce. nothing else brings childhood back like one of those.

My Mom used to make fantastic homemade doughnuts. I have to try it myself. But, in a crunch a maple or strawberry frosted Dunkin' Donuts will work for me. Occaisionally, I like a jelly doughnut too.

JELLY DONUTS! and beignets yummmy!
danielle00 at 6:52PM on 06/02/07
For those of you who enjoy Café du Monde beignets, there is a place in Metairie (suburb of New Orleans) called Morning Call that has even better beignets, in my opinion. It's well worth venturing off the beaten path for these. One major difference is they don't pile sugar on them for you--it's entirely your decision how much damage you're going to do. They're heavenly and are always served very hot.
I am also a sucker for plain glazed chocolate cake doughnuts.
kmnola at 7:02PM on 06/02/07
Almost anything with maple glaze will do, but if they are either buttermilk bars or custard filled, I'm in hog heaven!
Calichef at 4:59AM on 06/03/07
Thank you LunaPierCook for the Tim Horton history lesson...I'm hungry for a doughnut all of the sudden.
Lauren at 9:06AM on 06/03/07
Drops! As in Buttermilk drops. New Orleans' former MacKenzie's Bakery (closed due to health and money problems) had two things that I loved more than anything: King cakes and buttermilk drops. The buttermilk drops were big, round doughnuts, fried to a golden brown and then lightly glazed. Sadly, I couldn't find a picture of them. (Now that MacKenzie's is gone, I can only go to Coffee & in Gretna and Marrero in Jefferson Parish. Everything is good there, but the jam-filled ones are my favs.)
Morning Call is definitely better for beignets (and service!) than Cafe du Monde. When I was home visiting from Hong Kong in January, I ate my fill on them and forced my fiance to do the same (he wasn't so amused). I prefer CDM's cafe au lait, though.
Now that I'm in Asia, my favorite are Japanese-style twist doughnuts, cake doughnuts, or (BEST BEST BEST) an (red bean) doughnuts. I'm a bit biased, having worked at a Japanese bakery as a student, but omgdroolyum. For those in Boston, Japonaise in Porter Square and Brookline has these and are authentically good. :)
Sanba at 9:52AM on 06/03/07
Plain old raised glazed for me; I like the glaze to be fresh and sticky. I also enjoy cake doughnuts with blueberries and/or buttermilk in the mix.
kathy in oakland at 3:08PM on 06/03/07
My all-time favorite donuts were the whole wheat & powdered sugar ones at the old Chock Full 'O Nuts chain in NYC.
Otherwise I have to go with the Dunkin Donuts plain classic.
I remember when they came with little "handles" so you could really dunk them. Mmmm. But not as mmm as Chock Full 'O Nuts.
toolminer at 4:36PM on 06/03/07
Oh my God Sanba! I absolutely LOVED McKenzie's King Cake. It's still my all time favorite to this day, followed by Tastee Donuts. What a good memory, thank you!
FoodPorncess at 8:26PM on 06/03/07
Crullers.
toolminer! Thanks for mentioning those Chock Full O' Nuts donuts. (Remember the nutted cream-cheese sandwiches?) They were so good. Haven't thought about 'em in years...
baboo at 9:36PM on 06/03/07
Anything without peanuts! (Sorry, I don't like nuts in my dessert.)
And my mom still gets a little teary-eyed when thinking about Chock Full O'Nuts nutted cream cheese sandwiches.
amyscoop at 10:29PM on 06/03/07
Last time I saw a Tim Horton's was in Halifax Nova Scotia...
Cafe Du Monde is great for chicory coffee, but I would have to agree about the beignets being better at the other place.
Yes, I guess I have not seen those type of crullers around now that you specify...I kinda like my own pop-n-fresh donuts!
